On a school trip the teachers introduced the whole grade to this dance and everybody loved it and did it and many remembered it,I searched this up just to remember it and love it again
@@MyMountainHomeandKitchen yes I do too as well. I actually danced along to the vintage Charleston dance when I was in either 5th grade or 6th grade history class. My history teacher at the time had taught us how to do the Charleston dance while I physically in her history class.
Wow that’s amazing. I love dance parties even better participating in along with them by joining in all of the entertainment fun. Anybody can learn how to do these group dances.
@@MarkHeiskell That is awesome! I don't know if they teach those dances anymore in school and it's a shame. I remember learning to do the minuet in PE class. We had a dance unit. I wish they would teach those dances, it's really a reach into the history.
This is really lovely! It connects the people, young and old, in this simple circle dance. I have danced many dances like this. This is one of the many versions of this traditional dance, which originated in the time of the American Civil War (19th century).
Wow this is very entertaining 🎉. I appreciate watching this for my special birthday celebration today. I could watch this all day long for hours even join in by dancing along. Cheers.
Happy birthday! I love watching this, too. I used to dance quite a bit, square dancing and country western type dancing but it's been many years. I danced with this square dancing group for several years and love seeing my friends in the video, although some of them have passed on at this point
@@MarkHeiskell Yes and no. Square dancing returned to popularity in the 70's and 80's I believe and many people got involved at that point. Then it fell out of popularity again but the original particpatits continued dancing so by the time I get involved most of the particpants were quite elderly. They were excellent dancers, however, as they had kept dancing through the years. They had a wonderful social outlet and kept fit!
It was a lot of fun. Line dancing, square dancing, and circle dances are the greatest. The only issue is the lack of male partners. Usually more women than men!
Carly I was privileged to be part of a square that demonstrated to PE students here in the Bay area!! We ALL remember learning this in school and I hope the tradition keeps on!!
If I’m not mistaken, the caller is Scot Byars!!?? The voice and the wireless mic, then watching him move!! Whoo hoo!! I want to be him when I grow up!😜
I never knew how complicated calling was. I have a great deal of respect for both of them - and you. A couple of times Scott and Lawrence called together and that was just wonderful.
I think we may have also, this video is from a square dancing class I took about 15 years ago. I was a member of the square dancing club for several years until I moved. Really enjoyed it.
Wellll ..............that's One way to dance to it ...... I was taught the Traditional way to dance it in the clubs by people from the west / mid west that I was stationed with in Germany back in the first half of the 80's ......... { the circle dance version where you Don't change partners }

I totally understand. This was an experienced group of folk and square dancers, so they were used to these type of dance moves and calls. If you don't do this type of thing regularly, it can be quite confusing.

I love this, I'm a black woman in Chicago that love to line dance, and I love the cotton eyed joe song
It's definitely a whole lot of fun. Line dancing sounds great - you don't need to find a partner which can be a challenge.

LOL me in quarantine having to do this not only for a grade but by my self.
Lol me too
Don’t you mean grad? And why would you have to do it for school when no one’s going to school because of quarantine?
@@kathrynblair8845 I mean that I had to do this for gym, it was the last dance assessment and I had to do it good to fulfill the grade

Barn dance is so much fun I like that's it's quite simple but you can still have a laugh.
Aww the little girl
Never seen this version before! But I love it! I'll introduce it to my group! =)

Wow that little girl is amazing
Love it! The dancers seem to enjoy this dance even if it's a simple one.

With that many people, so crowded. Looks like they were having a hard time moving. Should have had an inner circle, in addition to the outer circle.
I think the perspective of the camera makes it look more squished than it was. There was enough room for everyone!
they should do heel toe polka
I've done polka - I just love it!
I HAD TO LEARN THIS IN SCHOOL. IMAGINE A BUNCH OF PUBESCENT TEENS DANCING TO THIS IN A SCHOOL GYM.
I had to learn the minuet and and quite a few of those old English dances in school. Thank goodness TH-cam hadn't been invented.
I had to do this for a grade 😶
I hope you passed!
I'm doing this right now for a grade
Omg how fun😊
Oh my gosh, how much fun this was! I was on the stage videoing it and jumped down afterwards to dance. Those circle dances are so satisfying!
I wish my school did this when went to private school
We learned many of these dances in PE when I was in grammer school in the 1960's I wish they still taught them, too.
