The lack of accountability in older students is HUGE! I feel like that was the only thing I didn’t like growing up homeschooled…otherwise, it was all fantastic. Just something I really want to focus on as a homeschool mom.
Because of my speech impairment and difficulty of reading aloud after our lesson time. I've been using audible for our read alouds,, but we listen to them together. So then I can still ask her questions about the reading.
I'm also a 2nd generation homeschooler. I was 100% unschooled and I hated it! I craved structure and formal lessons. I started public school in the 9th grade and did really well, despite not having any formal education. With my own son I find it hard to let go of our planned lessons even when I see joyful curiosity and natural learning occurring. And even though I have first hand knowledge that he can do well without so much structured learning.
#7 is so so hard for me in my current location. I keep praying and trying…. for years and years and have found nothing. I have shed so many tears in frustration around this topic. We need community and friends.
I’m so sorry friend. I know that is so hard. I would say do the best with what you can and if I’m person opportunities are not available maybe consider digital options. It’s obviously not the same but could be a good compromise.
Oh that was me… expecting all my homeschool kids to be exceptional and gifted. I put too high expectations on my kids the first few years, and still sometimes struggle with it
So good and so true! I’m a second generation homeschooler too… as a high school student my mom left me to myself and I often felt alone and embarrassed if I didn’t know something or didn’t finish something. I had no accountability and lots of shame regarding my math especially. Planning to do things differently with my kids! They are still young currently :)
Great video! Loved the reminder to check in with older kids. I did not do that very well last year and she skipped some stuff, so I let her know that was my fault and I check in now. :) And #10 yes!!!
Thank you for this video. First year homeschooler here...my 10 year old has been so independent because she does well that way but that is also because I have been often very consumed with her little sis who is 6 year old. I knew I have been missing that relationship which is being brought back recently. Especially as we are wrapping up the year and checking her work, I had to be involved a little more. She did great but still needed it. I don't know why it feels so hard to be consistently involved on a daily basis, but I am working on it.
This is SOOOO HELPFUL. Thank you for sharing this and asking 200 homeschoolers to contribute, really powerful. My girls are 7 and 4, I'm so glad I heard this now.
Yes to the comparison within the home! 😬 My oldest struggles to learn and retain most academic concepts, while my two younger kiddos seem to pick up everything so easily. It’s a tough dynamic!
I love what you said about patience! So true. I always say “I wish I had been smarter sooner” and started homeschooling when my kids first entered school
Accountability for older students is sooo important!! It’s so tempting as my oldest gets older to let her go off and be independent and not check in. I have had to reel in and check in regularly with her 😬
Hi..this will be my 2nd yr. of homeschooling coming up. I will be teaching my son a 3rd grade curriculum. We joined a homeschool group which meet once a week and allow time for a lesson, then a craft to go along with it and then playtime. I've noticed that the Good and the Beautiful is a popular site and I think it's good also but..I personally like other companies and have chosen our 3rd grade books accordingly. At first I felt insecure and was about ready to become a follower of the group with the same curriculum choices, then I stopped and realized it's ok to be different and I chose what I chose with my son's best interests in mind. We need to give ourselves the freedom to be ok with this.
Thank you so much for this. We started home schooling 3 years ago. We are love it. Come to find out that my daughter was falling behind and the school did not tell me. So I have been try to get her on her level. Anyways because of that I get my own family testing her. This video really spoke to my heart thank you.
I remember being tested as a kid by well meaning family members and I know how stressed my mom always was about it. I’m so sorry you have had to go through all of that but I’m so glad this video helped.
We delayed homeschooling as I thought I needed more experience in education after the preschool years!!! I’m glad that my older kids are able to take ownership of their school stuff!!! We check in and help them with it!!! We speak about the fact that they may need help!!! We love read alouds but they aren’t daily anymore apart from our youngest!!! My older kids come to us and ask for certain books to be read to!!! We loved our homeschool group so much we have now started up a homeschool group for our kids from the same homeschool group we where part of as kids!!! We couldn’t homeschool our kids without outside help!!! We love doing school on the beach!!!
I just love you and your videos so much. You are such a lovely person to listen to! Thank you for sharing insights and encouragement. I've been doing this for awhile and I still enjoy watching your videos when I'm able. ♥️
As always your videos are so helpful and encouraging! I love your channel. After hearing this I'm going to take the leap and have my son try out IEW spelling for a few weeks. He's entering the middle school years and I can tell that he's maturing and is ready for a new approach in this subject. If the free lessons don't work out we'll try something else.
You would be surprised what’s out there. We do speech therapy at our local college. They have a speech clinic and offer a sliding scale for families without insurance

Same

That’s an awesome idea!
Thank you! I have 2 special needs teens, and after 13+ years it’s still a struggle. They aren’t independent learners.
I am glad this could be an encouragement

It’s so hard to fight those default methods

It’s easy to do

Yes, I’m thankful we get to do things differently
Great video! Loved the reminder to check in with older kids. I did not do that very well last year and she skipped some stuff, so I let her know that was my fault and I check in now. :) And #10 yes!!!
I also did not do that well last year but I’m working on a better system for the fall

I am right there with you. It’s so hard when homeschooling multiple kids. I struggled so much with this and am hoping to correct it this next year.
This is SOOOO HELPFUL. Thank you for sharing this and asking 200 homeschoolers to contribute, really powerful. My girls are 7 and 4, I'm so glad I heard this now.
Glad it helped!

It’s so hard, we have a lot of that happening here too.

It’s totally a lazy thing on my end!!
Same. Last year was the first year I had kids who could work independently so much and I found myself not checking in enough either
Great video! I'm guilty of some of these mistakes. Hopefully I can do things differently this school year.
I too am guilty of some of these too

I love that they offer free lessons to try. I think that’s a great way to go
This was sooo good. From one homeschool mama to another- Thank you! 😊
So glad you enjoyed it
My son needs speech and ot and I didn’t think to look for one because I thought it might be expensive but I’ll still look into it
You would be surprised what’s out there. We do speech therapy at our local college. They have a speech clinic and offer a sliding scale for families without insurance
So relatable, thank you.
You are very welcome
One of my biggest regrets is that we didn’t start sooner.
I hear that so often.
That's mine too
Sooo encouraging 👏
I’m so glad to hear that
Wise words, as always!
