Lee Allen was my friend. I had the privilege of playing with him quite a few times in the 1980's. Thank you for featuring him and keeping his name alive. I attended his funeral in Los Angeles. Little Richard officiated. A who's who in music attended the service. A wonderful musician and a wonderful man.

    Great video on lee!
He’s my great uncle. He passed before I knew him but my family said he was a wonderful person. He invited my parents to a jam session once before they got married and my dad loved it

Thanks so much for spreading the love for Lee Allen. He's one of my favorites. Another great solo tune of his I love is "Rockin' at Cosimo's". I could list dozens of solos that I love that he did with Little Richard, Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, Professor Longhair, Shirley and Lee, The Spiders, Roy Montrell, Paul Gayten, Lloyd Price, and Dave Bartholomew. The epitome of "rock n roll sax", to me!

One of the best sax channels on youtube! Great work!
Could you make a video teaching us how to do those screaming/cracking altissimos.
I cant explain better, but you can check Daehan Choi cover of "We are the Champions", he does it many times after 1:49min.
I've been searching but cant find any explanation.
    Thanks!

Actually Sam Butera was a big influence on Lee. He used to jam with Sam and learned from him directly.

Yeah, they were the same age but Sam was already touring with big bands and established in New Orleans before Lee even moved there. I've heard stories from Dr. John of epic battles during late night jams between the two. I bet that must have been awesome to hear.
I'm sure there was some influence from (and on) Sam, but I've heard that Lee says he actually got his raspy sound from Jimmie Lunceford's tenor soloist Joe Thomas.
