excellent video. I did not know you could screw the nalgene cap on top of the filter. I have been using the steripen/prefilter for one year and very satisfied. I am a backpacker
Cool. I bought a Steripen about 9 years ago and never understood how the bottlecap was supposed to be used. I don't use widemouth Nalgenes usually tho, except for my French press attachment (or for peeing in - not the same one that I ever drink from lol)
If you're submerging the entire bottle into water, remember to clean and disinfect the top before you reattach after using the Steripen. Otherwise you end up drinking from a probably-contaminated surface.Simple washing out or rinsing out, even with clean water, might not be enough to make it safe for drinking from. I think I'd prefer to carry a fine mesh cover or fine cloth for pre-filtering. Still pretty neat, though, because it can be attached to the bottle like that.
does the steri pen have a usb recharging option? i will go check. EDIT--- yes its available with a usb recharging cable for backpackers who have a small folding solar panel. that way no extra batteries to worry about
I got life straws for Christmas. Instructions say stand it in the source for a time then take 5 quick draws/sips. Have not tried it yet but it's supposed to filter chemical and bacterial contaminants. Has anyone used life straws? I saw a video of someone drinking with one from a still water creek and didn't get I'll. Any real life reviews?
Does it filter backwards if you filled your bottle with bad water and then tipped the bottle over a pot and the water would filter through the inside of that insert able piece?
@@Iridium242 Thanks I thought it might so if needed it would work to get water into a pot so it could be boiled. However if it didn't take out the very small silt it might have to be done a different way. If a person had time they could let it settle too. Just thinking of ways that will work if a person got stranded or lost in the hills. Thank you so much for your videos and reviews!!!

Clean water is always #1 priority

for the price and it weighs next to nothing why not get and use, good review
There is a push/pull stopper at the top. If dunking your bottle in a stream, should the stopper be open (pulled up) or down (pushed in)?
Pulled up is open

Yeah it would but the same 40 microns, so again it would remove just larger solids and nothing else.
