You're one of the hardest working rail fans out there. Love the videos and your encyclopedic knowledge. I left Jersey in 1971, but spent my youth hanging around Hoboken and Eport. Worked a summer as a clerk at croxton, on the EL. Decided railway employment wasn't for me.
It's always a pleasure when you take us trackside for a Jersey Transit EMD safari, and the hunting always seems to be good for you! Thanks for bringing us along Bwana! 👍
Caltrain still has three F - 40’s number # 920 thru # 922 these 3 F - 40 were built in 1988 they are the youngest ones of all the F - 40’s that ran on Caltrain
MUSIC !!! Love the sounds of those EMD prime movers, but am I correct in thinking the newer locomotive @6:00 actually accelerated its train quicker? Thanks!
Yes, the PL42 has significantly more power than the old GPs and F40s. The PL42 has 4200hp at the prime mover and around 3600hp to the rail at max HEP load, so probably around 3800-4000hp to the rail in commuter use (a 7 car commuter train is not going to use all the available HEP). The F40s put 3000hp to the rail (and use a separate HEP generator in the tail of the locomotive). Also the AC traction motors of the PL42 put down a lot more starting torque than the DC motors of the GPs and F40s.
4101 def my favorite. I vaguely remember seeing the old U34s in that scheme in the mid 80s in Ramsey (and the 4 track main I think). But was the 'bluebird' scheme first used by EL? Or NJDOT? EL right?
MTA & NJT have a service agreement to provide service up in Rockland and Orange Counties. The Metro North trains that operate between Hoboken & Middletown/Port Jervis NY are METRO NORTH TRAINS but they will have NJT conductors & engineers operating them and in return MTA will provide them their train cars and engines to NJT for them to use. The MTA units & train cars are OWNED by MTA but they’re given to NJT to use mostly for Metro North’s Port Jervis line but every now and then you’ll see MTA’s stuff appear on other NJT lines outside Metro North’s Port Jervis line. Hope that answers your question.

The good old Erie Lackawanna.
@3985uprr when I was a teen, I bought 5 shares of EL, for about $5 each, so I could attend the annual meeting in NYC.
Nothing beats the roar of classic EMD Locomotives

Thanks! I’m glad you enjoy it.
Looks a lot like a 45 to me, with the flared out radiator 🤔
I love to turn the volume way up when those EMDs start pulling out of the station! Nice vid!
12:50 There I am with the red and black backpack, I had no idea you were there!
I tiptoe around the rails

7:23 always fun to see the lady liberty sticker on 4214
You love those GPs, F40s, and those other olde locomotives!
Funny thing is I may be heading up to Middletown today to see if 4208 is running later. I’ll still be happy with a F40, GP40 or ALP 45 or PL42AC
4208 has broken down yet again. NJT always decides to paint the most unreliable engines
@ ur kidding me. Well maybe I’ll catch another heritage unit instead lol

@@mrvwbug4423 Thanks! Much appreciate the detailed explanation of the differences in power and why.
2:32 4204 gonna need a jet washer 😶

Why those trains in NJ say MTA? Are they Jersey trains or NY trains?

MTA and NJT operate the Port Jervis line in a joint arrangement. It's NJT engineers and conductors, equipment may be either MTA or NJT.
retired railfan did you ever work on the railroad
No I didn’t
