In Indonesia you have something similair called the Wajang Dolls. My great grandmother came from Indonesia to the Netherlands after the independence. She had Some dolls with her and I played with them as a child. Great Asian traditions.
I never know before about shadow puppetry beside wayang kulit, its not suprising for me to know there is one from china, like, they too have rich culture 👏
Haha of course! I’m from Thailand and we have something similar too. I think it was because us East Asian adapted a lot of our culture from China. We did a lot of trades back in the days good to see it present today
I guess lots of SE Asian culture came from China as they have longer history bout going everywhere, and perhaps since they are spread everywhere, their culture stays at those perspective place
omg i watched that in my spanish class... i think? that old master cought a fly with chop sticks and had bonsai trees, plus that car polishing scene lol
While visiting Indonesia, idk it was my Mom’s birthplace in Solo, they have Opera level shadow puppet. Like, dude! The show was from 9 pm to 4 am. I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t understand what the puppeteer say, but surely how can i forget the atmosphere! 🇨🇴 🇨🇴
Last bit reminds me of that video about a Singaporean girl learning Chinese opera. Great to see younger generations keeping the cultural heritage strong 💪
@@waktukewaktu1616 pretty sure China was the one influencing them. A lot of Asian cultures are heavily built on Indian and Chinese cultures, along with the original. India and China were some of the oldest cultures that didn't influence each other until Buddhism.

At that time, South East Asia was still mostly jungle bro, I'm from SEA too, from Indonesia, I guess we weren't even have proper clothes back then, around 100 BC 🤣
A great video on a wonderful tradition. There is also a great shadow puppet tradition in Indonesia. I have been to these Indonesian shadow puppet events, complete with torch lights, gamelan orchestra, and independent vocalists, all performing late into the night. This is really cool! It kinda reminds me of Japanese Rakugo, even though they don't do shadow puppets, they're still just as good at drawing you into the story and doing voices of all the characters as a one person show. It's amazing. I absolutely love East Asian performance art!!

Video wrongly claims it originated in China while it came to both South east Asia and China from India. Like how Buddhism and Hinduism spread through trade routes. Thats why South East Asian puppetry have Indian epics
@@otomackena7610 It's stated in UNESCO that shadow puppet is from China. I do acknowledged that alot of countries adopted shadow puppet stories from Indian stories (especially ancient Hinduism and Buddhism stories), but it doesn't mean that the art came from India
During the making of Disney’s Mulan (1998) The film was originally going to open up with a shadow puppet intro explaining how the Great Wall of China was built in the first place to keep the Hun Army Led by the treacherous Shan Yu out of China.
0:12 "Today, shadow puppetry is a nearly extinct tradition." I can understand why. Only one kid looks genuinely excited, the rest look thoroughly bored. And then there's the two in the middle, probably taking video of the performance to post on Insta.
In Cambodia also have these shadow too but one people one character and the puppet they use are very big , is a giant and a god and more I have study already but I never seen again from now
Actually it originated in India and travelled to both China and S.E.A like how Buddhism and Hinduism went to rest of Asia through trade routes thats why Indonesian, Thailand puppetry have Indian epics. Video wrongly claims it originated in China.
Shadow puppetry is not exclusive to any culture alone. This art form can be seen in many cultures. India and China probably developed their own shadow puppet show independently.
It's nice to see hardworking passionate people doing what they love. Much respect 👍

Shadow pappets are also very famous in Greece for decades now
Ancient stuff we got the original one too here in indonesia but it all gone around 90s
They have something similar in India...it was said to have come from Persia
It's similar to Hacivat ve Karagöz. Same idea but in Turkish.
That’s what I thought
Ours is solely a single puppeteer controlling the characters and musical instruments. There norm seems to be multiple people.

It came from Indonesia (javanesse).
From China and Indian influences I guess, since the stories are originally Indian stories (Mahabarata, Ramayana etc etc)
