No other band has so consistently chronicled the human condition....Pink Floyd is what emotions sound like - fear, pain, lust, love, greed, remorse, inner reflection - they cover it all perfectly. There may never again be such a perfect union of talent.

Its also the only PF song not sung by a member of the band. It was sung by Roy Harper. Same person as Led Zeppelin's "(Hat's off to) Roy Harper". Same Roy Harper that was arrested for possessing child pornography a couple of years ago...

The machine = The music industry
Which flows perfectly to the next song on the album "Have a Cigar", a song that you need to react to.

My personal opinion? Well it goes something like this: PF's distain for the music industry and its executives is not only based on monetary concerns, but also because the pressure placed upon the band early caused much of the degeneration of Sid Barrett. Sid did not like this pressure to produce 'singles' aka the Beatles style of music. This music shares both the distain and concern over their former band leader in the aftermath of such pressure. LOVE the Kettle drums in this!!!

    • @albradley9050
      @albradley9050 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree. These guys were not fan of the businessmen within the music industry at all. It probably started way back in the Syd days when they were criticized for being too loud, and then on when they pressured the band for a follow up single after "See Emily Play".
He had his demons, but since this album is not just about their cynical view of the business but also a lament for Syd, you can see how they would easily tie it together. I have always thought the same thing about that.

So here is my issue with the quarantine forced home school situation: As you well know, not every kid is lucky enough to have 2 parents in the home who are both invested in their educational and emotional success. I was speaking to a 5th grade teacher in a very poor district in Tennessee and she is livid about this situation. In her words - I am the first line of defense for my students. I see the bruises, I see the malnutrition, I see the ripped clothes, I see the holes in their shoes, I know they don't have internet, some don't even have electricity! One or both parents (if the kid even has 2 parents in their life...) is addicted to meth or other substances and don't give a damn if their kid does the "bare minimum packet" the school sent home. There will be kids who will be held back - or worse, advanced without the skills they needs to do the next grade. Home schooling is wonderful - we home schooled our children until high school age, but this "forced" home schooling happening now is going to cost a lot of kids an extremely high price in present and in the future. For a lot of kids, going to school is the one place they feel safe and cared for. We all know child abuse/domestic violence rates are up due to people living in closer proximity that they are used to. A lot of misguided/idiot/inept parents are going nuts having their kids home all the time. To sum up this teacher, I would rather say "put your mask on!" 5000 times a day and have my kids back in class.

Whenever venturing into a new Pink Floyd experience remember they were a very politically anti establishment charged band with a lot of mind expanding substance influence. I find listening to the whole album brings the greater message. That's just my opinion. I do like your reactions, we differ slightly in some thoughts but that's the beauty in this. Rock on y'all.

When I hear this song, it takes me back to Northeastern University. Freshman year September to December 1984, Stetson East Dorms. Partying with George and Lou. Did a 3 day bend on shrooms. We were higher than high. It was a fun time. I did graduate in 1989 in Electrical Engineering. Life's been a trip.
This album has a lot to do with Roger "Syd" Barrett. He started the band and named it after two blues players. He did too much psychedelics, he lived at home and did his paintings. He would take a picture of the painting and destroy the original. I've read many books on this band. David Gilmour gave Syd a million dollars for the rest of his life. He passed away inn 2006.
An interesting tid bit is Syd coming into the studio as a bald fat man, no one knew it was him, until someone mentioned it was Syd. That was just bizarre. Checkout the book, A Very Irregular Head about Syd written by Rob Chapman.

I think we use more of what we learned in school than most people realize. We may not use the specific formulas, detailed historical information, etc... But, learning those things helped us develop our brains and be able to think of and understand concepts of math, science, history, cause and effect etc... They give us the foundation we need. There are also those who use a lot of what they learned on a daily basis in their chosen fields. Educate the masses and hope that many of them pursue higher education. You never know where the next Einstein or Stephen Hawking will come from.

The sound at the end of the song was meant to represent an elevator taking "future rock star" up to the party where the execs are gladhanding each other. Math education today is no longer all about learning how to calculate. You are correct in that a cell phone and spread sheet can do this. Math education is all about math literacy learning how to problem solve. In other word, how to think. As an Algebra teacher, I realize that many of my students will never use algebra in there everyday life, but the brain development that happens during learning algebra will be of great use to my students. In fact you are using yours as you interpret this song, as you plan your children's curriculum, and deal with the problems created by Covid 19. Learning algebra helped you do all of these things.

love you both! will start off by saying of course to each their own as far as drawing a conclusion to what each song means to them. But as I'm sure it has been said here many times before is certain bands and albums are best to experience as a whole. I believe meant to be at least at first listened to from start to finish. Maybe it's just me, who knows. You both are very intelligent and I enjoy hearing what immediately follows the song. Thanks

Like most Pink Floyd albums, you have to listen to the whole album in one thread... many many times to really get it / appreciate it fully! You are lucky, man; your girlfriend is pretty smart... good for you ! ;-)

All Pink Floyd songs speak for themselves, and IMO do not need context to enjoy1 Enjoy!

Pretty much spot on as usual. This song and Have a Cigar (song immediately afterward) were about the record industry and how they pretty much are out to screw over anyone to make a buck. The other songs on this album were Shine on You crazy Diamond (first and last section of the album) and Wish You Were Here which were inspired by Syd Barrett.

Sorry Vin......Excel doesn't calculate my engineering career. As a structural engineer, mastering a T-84 calculator goes a long way. And to do that, you need to know how to do those formulas on paper. The calculator just makes it faster. The same applies to water treatment, computer science, biological sciences and everything else we take for granted.
