    I went through PI in 1971, 2nd Battalion in the old wooden barracks and trained with the M14. I see the steam pipes are still there. Now I remember the sound of cadence, with fondness, like it was yesterday. Even though I hated it when I was there, It made me the person I became and for that I will be forever grateful. Or else the men will hesitate when the time comes to pull the trigger and kill the enemy. Most likely every country does it. Actually, Corey, the sound made by platoons marching today is different from when I was marching to it and for one reason only---today's boondockers have a one-piece sole/heel that is made of some kind of cushioned material, whereas the ones on the boondockers we wore had a hard rubber heel. When we were in unison the sound of 75 heels striking the parade deck at the same time almost sounded like those old newsreels of German troops goose-stepping into Paris. Today's Marines are just as sharp as we were, and I believe they are better trained. One thing that hasn't changed is the sound of each DI's unique method of calling cadence---some are much better than others. We had a junior DI who was almost impossible to march with, and another one who was terrific at counting cadence. I don't know if you've had a chance to return to PI, but I visited there about six or seven years ago on a regular training day. No graduation. No bands. No excited families. Just dozens of platoons drilling. The new platoons were doing it "by the numbers" and the salty platoons were practicing obliques and counter-marches. All of it brought back memories of the days when I was a maggot in Platoon 115 and it seemed as if graduation day would never arrive. I can tell you truthfully, it would be impossible for any old Marine to return to Parris Island and hear those sounds and see those young recruits, and not feel tears of Marine Corps pride. Semper Fi.

  • @wilhard45
    @wilhard45 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    This platoon is not too bad. Mostly the sound of one heel striking the deck and not a pitter, pitter, boom, pitter, pitter as some are slightly ahead of the beat and some are slightly behind. It is tough. My platoon did it once as we were marching back to our Quonset huts. It was so mind blowing as we marched past the Quonset huts of other platoons they actually came out to watch and listen. Our platoon commander (SDI) was barely whispering the cadence and we all heard him as if he were shouting in our ears. We won final drill but even so we did not match the perfection of that one day. Obviously I still remember it more than 50 years later. Here is hoping you soon to be recruits get to experience that moment of being completely in sync with the other roughly 75 other recruits.
