I love ICM. I actually prefer it to traditional photography. It takes me back to art history A level in school and art college studying the old masters. I’ve been shooting ICM out on my daily walks with my wife. You’re right though. You need to take lots of photos to get a good few ones to work on. ICM for me is more about capturing what you feel than what see, because the blending and layering comes from within.
Quite right Simon. The lack of rules etc means you can just do what you like or makes you happy. Unlike traditional photography I find with the editing you can put your own emotions into the work. I'm glad I stumbled across it 😀
I got into ICM photography totally by accident. I was out one evening walking the Sth Bank in London snapping away at people but wasn't keeping an eye on my settings. Got home, put pictures onto my pc and i was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Not everyone's cup of tea but something I'm really getting into. Great advice BTW with the ND filter. Was about to buy one when i read that my Fuji camera has one built into it, didn't even know that so that's a right result. Thanks Andy, great tutorial.
Fantastic I’m going out tonight sunset thank you you so much Andy’s tips are my go to videos love your work at your voice comes across so calm and relaxed xxxx❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Thank you for the tip on the 6 stop circular nd filter Andy. Always worry myself when experimenting with my Lee Big Stopper. And look forward to seeing more tips 👍
Great set of tips Andy. Thanks. I still need to practice so I don’t get a twirl but more of a smooth flow of clouds down into the foreground. If that’s makes sense!
Had a lightbulb moment when you said about moving light round your subject, makes sense now you've said it. In your hands Andy, ICM - Incredably Creative Masterful!!
i guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a method to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot the password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
Thank you for this video. The ND is necessary during the day. Many times I’ve lowered the ISO and aperture and I blow out the highlights without the ND filter. Chimping is critical for me. I can’t previsualize accurately so I’m getting feedback and adjusting my movement or shutter speed. Great advise to shoot a lot. We all have large SD cards. I only get about 2-5% of my images that I like. I have learned many ways not to do ICM. In the end the difference between a professional and amateur photographer is the professional photographer only shares their good images. Mask On Nurse Marty(Ret)
Thank you so much for these helpful tipps! I love the look of ICM and tried it myself on a couple occasions, but I wasn't very happy with the results. Now I have some guidlines for the next time.

@@andrewsgray Describing why you made certain movements was very helpful to me. There's really nothing random about it. Loved the nearly dropped camera bit, too.
Very interesting as usual. What about focal length - anything in your experience that works better/more useful than any other, or does it depend on the subject?
Really great video Andy. I have been doing the up and down movement now thanks to you I will experiment more. I don't have a 6 stop just a polorizer would this work.
The best ICM photo I ever took was when I accidentally dropped my camera ... Fortunately I did catch it before it hit the rocks! The picture is in my comedy book called 5 X 7 (by Lewis)
Very new to photography ~ in fact, just a month in!! Lockdown project. I don’t have filters, is this something I can try without filters? I have done some close shots and got some great results, but when I try landscape they are just too bright, I obviously need to work out how to balance the light more accurately, is this something that the filter helps with? Thanks Ps ~ love your photography!!
Hey Keith. Good question. To be honest, some of it will depend on your camera and how it handles lights and shadow. As an example my Nikon will blow out highlights at the drop of a hat but handles shadow recovery nicely, so I under expose. It's again one of the things to experiment with 👍
Great tips Andy. Could i give you a tip in return, after my wife kept having palpitations when i put my camera over edges of bridges or drops, she bought me nice leather wrist strap and now i know i cant drop the camera. You should definitely invest in one.
Haha! I was going to do that about a year ago when I accidentally "threw" my camera away onto some tarmac, I never got round to it. Had I got one, I'dve included it as tip no.2 😉
I'm sure I saw a quick glimpse of myself at the start 👍🏻 before some other bloke you must have given a lesson to, Tom I think he's called? 🤔 Tip 6 get a wrist strap! Heart I'm my mouth as you almost threw camera away AGAIN!
Haha if I had one I'dve made it tip no.2! But I can't well recommend when I don't use one myself 😂 Aye Tom, nice lad, talked about food all the time - good going for someone so skinny! 😜

Hey, on the topic of ND filters, do you have any videos using a 10 stop? I bought one a while back for extreme experimentation but haven't used it much (yet). Thanks for the reply (and the video) and take care!
I've only really used my 10 stop for proper long exposure photography, I rely on the camera being able to focus too much to use it for ICM. As for variable NDs, I'll be able tell you in about a month as I'm getting one to test out
@@andrewsgray I have the Hoya HD MKII IRND 64 (6-stop) on the way and I'm sure I'll be more than happy with it. Looking forward to exploring ICM. I'd be curious as to what you learn from testing the variable density filter. Maybe you can do a video on that(?) Thanks again!

Thanks Andy. Useful tips. What focal length lenses do you recommend? Think you use 24-70mm don't you?
16-35mm, but its usually at about 24ish. I have to keep some back for the "5 *more* tips" vid! 😉😂
Hi Andy, brilliant stuff. Do you use a true 6 stop filter (ND64) or an ND6? Thanks.

I can't afford one. My M50 which I do my videos with, didn't give me the greatest results, so happy to stick with dslr at the moment 👍
