Of course, "sp." is the abbreviation of a species. But many garden shops, DIY shops, etc. do not understand it, and use the term "sp." for a uncertain specific plant, as if it is a scientific name. Therefore, many guys misunderstand the term in a wrong way as to refer to a certain species. "Genus + sp." means the genus is sure but the species is unknown or undescribed. If you know the rule of the usage of scientific name (binominal name), and use, like, "Philodendron sp.", it's OK. That means you describe the genus and don't describe the species.
