I would like to just say that I agree with the premise of the Szabo Express in that I feel "tactical folder" is an oxymoron. If you are carrying a knife for self defense, and I think you should, then it should be a fixed blade. Consider some realities of violent encounters; they happen up close and personal, your attacker is going to ambush you at an inopportune moment, and any attempt to resist is going to be done while also frantically trying not to die.
I used to carry a CRKT M21. I loved the flipper on this knife and I carried it as my EDC for years, using it extensively for all sorts of tasks. I had deployed this knife thousands of times and considered it to be fast and instinctual. I watched some videos on a defense oriented TH-cam channel that got me thinking. So I had a friend rob me at plastic spoon point. I tried to deploy my folder without being stabbed, and I found it impossible. Knife defense encounters are likely to occur in inside-a-phone-booth distances, and you are going to be reacting. They are already going to have their weapon out and are going to be close enough to use it. If you choose to fight back, it is going to be drawing from the drop, behind on the curve, and they are going to see it coming. They know to watch your hands. They aren't going to let you go for a pocket clip, they aren't going to let you do your little rolly wrist thingy or the flick thingy, it doesn't matter if you do the thing with the zip tie or you have an auto, nothing with a button or moving parts is going to work like you think it is going to work when someone has a knife inches from your body. They are going to grab your arm, they are going to swat at you, punch you, throw you around, and they are going to stab you, over and over and over again. At grappling distances, tied up and fighting for your life, your folder is going to fail you.
A fixed blade is much more caveman. There is no wrist flick or roll you need to do, no buttons you need to find, no mechanism to fill with pocket lint, coins, and debris, no springs to weaken and fail. Grab it in a full gorilla grip, draw it with large muscle groups, and it is ready to fight as soon as it clear the sheath. It is much harder for someone to stop this action, and much easier to accomplish while you struggle to keep from dying. I carry a TOPS HOG 4.5 right now in some custom Red Hill Kydex, and repeating the exercise with my friend found it to be much more dangerous for him. We cut it short, pardon the pun, because he found it difficult to not end up bleeding.

That's one of the better looking production fighting knife designs I've seen in a long time. That slight curvature of the blade and aggressive point w/ double edge and the slight recurve to the bottom edge combines everything you want in a fighting knife. I think I need one of these.

@@elihollingsworth6852 No sh*t? I know they offer it in a double edge or single edge variety. Obviously, the double edge is the way to go. I'm a combat knife junkie myself. I've practiced SOME Silat, but more Krav Maga. A karambit and/or a pikal will always be on my person, but recently I picked up a Lotar Orev. It's a BEAST. I've had all kinds of fighting knives, mainly Bowie, drop point, or spear point fighting with knives. I love A good Japanese style or recurve American tanto as long as the angle isn't to aggressive on the tanto cut & grind. A few customs too. I've been looking at a Work Tuff Gear Lanzetta or Kaviez for a trip to Ukraine in the not too distant future, but they are always sold out. This might be a good second choice. It's definitely purpose driven, and it just looks AMAZING in the hand. I appreciate the endorsement brother! 🤙

@@AlreadyDeadInside83079 yessir! Tops knives really fucking outdid themselves. The double edged one is only like $4 more and an absolute win, the geometry is definitely made for a double edged blade. Obviously, you could upgrade the steel and shit, but the design, geometry, and balance itself is truly the best of any fighting knife I've handled. Tops just keeps getting better and better. If you are looking for a backup operators knife, the lions toothpick, ICE dagger, and unzipper are both worth checking out. They really raised the bar on what i expect in a ~$150 tactical knife.

Fighting knives have historically had symmetrical oval shaped handles specifically because its better for combat, easier to grab hold of in a hurry and can be used in any grip style(Hammer grip, ice pick grip, fencers grip, mountain man grip and saber grip for example)
You can look at medieval, renaissance and WW1 and WW2 fighting knives and this is what they used, not because of technological limitations because the grips common in bushcraft today could easily be done way back in the days of ancient Greece if they wanted to, but because much of European blade combat was built on literally hundreds of years technical skill refinement. The old dagger grips resemble fencing swords because old knife fighting incorporated those tactics and techniques into knife work. While you cant parry with a small dagger you can counter cut to the hand and arm so a slight adjustment was all it takes. Early American bowie fighting was heavily influenced by European immigrants who brought their fencing skills to America and taught their skills(foil fencing mostly) to earn a living. The symmetrical dagger style handle is on the legendary Fairbairn Sykes of WW2 as well as the Applegate and Ek commando line as well as Randall made commando lines. The style of handle allows for a "fencers grip" which utilizes the back edge significantly more than a hammer or icepick grip and is especially effective at hyper precise and lightening fast cuts and stabs where the other grip styles are much less accurate and point agile. You will find such a grip is very uncomfortable with an asymmetrical handle like you'd find on a bushcraft knife.
The oval shape if done correctly allows for indexing of the edge and with double edge blades its especially helpful if one edge is too damaged or too dull to use effectively as you can simply flip the forward edge. When it comes to rolling in the hand Ive literally never had the problem with any oval shaped handles like the Kabar or the Fairbairn but its important to note if you are holding the dagger style handle like a bushcrafter rather than a fighter you will have issues. Also with such handles you arent supposed to be chopping into especially hard objects with it(the Kabar is designed as a dagger but with a single edge clip point to improve the blades durability, but note that its common breaking point is at the guard, this is because its handle is a dagger style with a stick tang which offers a much more agile blade at the cost of durability) and thats where the spinning comes into play.
Squared off handles can also be uncomfortable for fighting as the angles can bite into the hand, especially on the bones between the first and second knuckle of the pointer and middle fingers, this is less of an issue if you are holding it in a hammer grip but if you are holding it more like a fighting dagger it can be uncomfortable unless you have fairly large meaty hands.
If you are interested in talking about blades from a fighting perspective might I suggest looking into the works of William Fairbairn who trained the UK and American commando forces in WW2, his teachings can be found under the name "gutter fighting" and "Defendu"(no Im not joking, thats what it was called for a while and you can even find books on amazon with that title).
Dagger fighting goes back a long ways in Europe and while eastern arts currently overshadow European arts the reality is European blade arts were exceptionally refined and highly technical. In clashes with other cultures like the Samurai for example the European styles could more than hold their own. In the Philippines the art we call Kali Eskrima Arnis gets it "Eskrima" from Europeans who brought their blade skills there as Eskrima is rooted in the old european word for fencing (Esgrima in Frankish and Escrime in modern French). Then there is the famous "Arditi" from WW1 which were an elite Italian shock troopers who were outfitted with light armor, a couple grenades and their iconic daggers, they were trained in 16th century dagger fighting and were paid handsomely to capture enemies alive which they often did using just their knives. They were genuinely considered one of the most legendary units of WW1 and were devastatingly effective in the trenches. The Italians have a long cherished history of bladed combat systems that were renowned amongst europeans with the biggest rivals being of course the French. The Spanish also had their skilled Esgrimidor's(M) and Esgrimidora's(F) or Fencers.
If you would like a channel to look into for old school knife fighting and knife styles I recommend Scholagladiatoria.

Texas has very relaxed knife laws now too and so do the rural western states like Wyoming and Montana. The only parts of this country worth visiting are the national parks, state parks, and rural areas anyway. The cities are cesspools of leftist lunacy.

The only thing that should be changed is, that in my opinion a knife like this should be made from stainless steel.

    • @BigDaddySwingingMeat
      @BigDaddySwingingMeat ปีที่แล้ว +1

Carbon steel is easier to sharpen, stays sharper longer than traditional stainless steel, and is said to actually be sharper than traditional stainless steels that have been sharpened in the same way due to the chemical makeup of carbon steel. Supposedly, only obsidian blades can reach higher sharpness levels on the BESS sharpness scale than carbon steel so carbon steel is an excellent steel choice for self defense blades.

True, mainly because the eyelet spacing is way off for adding a small or large size Tek Lok. You'd have to Gerry Rig some horizontal carry straps or paracord loops in order to carry this in scout style carry across your back.
The one molle lock it comes with offers limited carry options.

Did you ever hear the term, “Never bring a knife to a gunfight.”? In the 1820s & 1830s Jim Bowie needed a fighting knife, not so much in the 3rd decade of the 21st Century.
When Bark River was asked by some Marines to produce what would become their Bravo 1 knife Mike Smith asked why they wanted a utility knife in lieu of a fighting knife. The Marines responded that the Marine Corps actually gave them firearms to fight with.
