This video features the biography of Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda was born as Narendranath Datta to father Vishwanath Datta and mother Bhubaneswari Devi on 12 January 1863, in Calcutta presently known as Kolkata, India. The birthday of Swami Vivekananda is celebrated as National Youth Day. Swami Vivekananda grew up in a middle-class family. His character and demeanor were shaped by his parents' progressive, rational and religious approach to life. Ever since he was a child, he has always been interested in spirituality, meditating and praying before Hindu deities.
Swami Vivekananda made a fascinating journey into spirituality. He was an excellent student. He studied everything that interested him - Philosophy, Science, History, Religion, Literature. He was also an avid reader of all kinds of religious texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Upanishads and Vedas. His intelligence was not only in books, but applied in real life, even when he traveled abroad. He never denied the Western materialistic way of life, but instead incorporated his knowledge of the Western world into traditional teachings. Because he believed in Western philosophy, he rebelled against caste differences practiced and ingrained in Asian cultures. Swami Vivekananda also joined the Brahmo Samaj, founded in 1828, in 1884 and adopted Christian practices, allowing him to embark on social reforms. During this time, in his early twenties, he first met Ramakrishna. He always questioned the form of God, arguing that due to Western influences God is a formless being. In 1884, his father died and he faced the harsh reality of having to pay off many of his father's debts. During this time his visits to Ramakrishna became more frequent and he came to understand his belief system which actually represents the unity of all religions.
He witnessed extreme poverty and suffering of the people and felt deep sympathy for his fellow beings. He later traveled to the West starting on 1st May 1893. Visiting Japan, China, Canada and reaching Chicago on 30th July 1893. In the Parliament of Religions that took place in September of 1893 with the help of a Harvard Professor, John Henry Wright spoke about Hinduism and his practices in the monastery in India. On 4 July 1902, Swami Vivekananda died while in a state of meditation after living his day like any other and teaching his followers and discussing the teachings with Vedic Scholars.
स्वामी विवेकानंद का जन्म, 12 जनवरी 1863 को कलकत्ता में हुआ। उनका बचपन का नाम नरेंद्रनाथ था। उनके पिता श्री विश्वनाथ दत्त, कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट के एक प्रसिद्ध वकील थे और उनकी माता श्री मती भुवनेश्वरी देवी, धार्मिक विचारों की महिला थीं। उनका अधिकांश समय भगवान शिव की पूजा अर्चना में व्यतीत होता था। बचपन से ही नरेंद्र अत्यंत बुद्धिमान होने के साथ साथ, नटखट भी थे। उनके घर में नियम पूर्वक पूजा पाठ होता था। परिवार के धार्मिक एवं आध्यात्मिक वातावरण के प्रभाव से बालक नरेंद्र के मन में बचपन से ही धर्म एवं अध्यात्म के संस्कार गहरे पड़ गए। उनके मन में ईश्वर को जानने और उसे प्राप्त करने की लालसा दिखाई देने लगी थी। ईश्वर के बारे में जानने की उत्सुकता में कभी कभी वे ऐसे प्रश्न पूछ बैठते थे कि स्वयं माता-पिता और कथावाचक पंडितजी तक चक्कर में पड़ जाते थे।
सन 1893 में स्वामी विवेकानंद अमेरिका के शिकागो शहर पहुंचें। यहाँ सम्पूर्ण विश्व के धर्मों का सम्मेलन आयोजित किया गया था। इस सम्मेलन में एक स्थान पर सभी धर्म गुरुओं ने अपने अपने धर्म की पुस्तकें रखी थी। वहाँ हमारे देश के धर्म के वर्णन के लिए रखी गई एक छोटी सी किताब थी, श्रीमद् भगवत गीता, जिसका कुछ लोग, मज़ाक बना रहे थे, परन्तु जैसे ही स्वामी विवेकानंद की बारी आई और उन्होंने अपना भाषण देने की शुरुआत की वैसे ही सारा हॉल, तालियों की आवाज़ से गूंज उठा। इसके बाद उनके द्वारा किये गये धर्म के वर्णन से सभी लोग अभिभूत हो गये और हमारे धार्मिक ग्रंथ श्रीमद् भगवत गीता का सभी ने लोहा माना।
स्वामी विवेकानंद ने 4 जुलाई 1902 को बेलूर में रामकृष्ण मठ में ध्यान लगाकर अपने प्राणों का त्याग कर दिया। आकाश, महाकाश में मिल गया और वे परम निर्वाण को प्राप्त हुए। उनके शिष्यों ने उनकी स्मृति में वहाँ एक मंदिर भी बनवाया।
