Love this!! I especially like the fact that he did the song in their style of music and used the same childlike drumming technique that meg did. And the lyrics are freaking adorable.
Have not read ANYTHING about LaMontagne? He's one of the most earnest songwriters I've ever encountered. He's a man who abhors the spotlight. If he says he likes Meg White, then he likes Meg White. End of story.
Songfacts®: This is an ode to the drummer and backing vocalist of The White Stripes, Meg White. LaMontagne told Rolling Stonemagazine: "I can only hope, that she doesn't think it's ridiculous." LaMontagne was asked during a Reddit Q&A whether Meg White ever responded to the song. He replied: "She did, it was sweet. She really liked the song and took it the way it was meant to be - as an homage to her and Jack."
That's beautiful how Ray instructed his drummer to imitate Meg White's signature drumming style for the drums in this song. Meg White is so amazing and the best drummer ever.
I see a bunch of misinformed posters, so I want to set the record straight: Ray is married to a woman named Sarah, with whom he has two kids. He's often stated in interviews that this is just a song; the lyrics just popped into his head while he was writing the music and it seemed to fit. To add some perspective, he wrote this around the same time Meg White was suffering from acute anxiety issues and had to cancel a number of White Stripes concerts because of it (in fact, I think pretty much all their 2007 concerts were cancelled). This isn't a dedication of love so much as one of support, and a very nice one at that. :)
Angela, please stop trying to SJW-ize this song. Meg White is amazing and nothing is wrong with loving her. On the contrary, it is her haters that have something wrong with them.
Exactly just a lovely supportive song of a lovely talented lady! Meg called Ray and thanked him and said she liked the song very much. I hear it as just it would be nice to be your friend. Great Song!
lol yeah.. thank you Conan O'Brien.. would not have heard this song without your influence may you live forever as the man who bested your phenomenal predecessor Jay Leno
He's been around for years! He's had songs featured in "The Devil wears Prada" and "Bones" Glad to see he's finally getting recognition for being so amazing!!!!!
Remember this tattoo artist told me a bit more than i had already heard about Mr. Lamontagne when I was working in Targets music section, listened to the cd for a week straight and now I understand "baby-making" music..........
Bob Odenkirk made a movie called Let's Go To Prison and he commissioned Meg White to write a drum theme for Dax Shepherd's character. Against Odenkirk's wishes it got dropped from the soundtrack however it's on this Gossip in the Grain album. Now I'm not saying that I know whereabouts on the album it is but I'd hazard a guess that it's used in this track.
Meg White You're alright In fact I think you're pretty swell Can't you tell? Meg White Such a pretty thing I saw your face on the cover Of a magazine Someday I'd like To take a walk with you maybe ride our bikes down by the seaside Meg White Saw you on the big screen Old Jack was king But you stole the scene Meg White Baby, you're the bomb Old Jack is great Don't get me wrong but this is your song Someday I'd like To take a walk with you And talk about most anything You'd like to talk about And watch the sun going down Going down Playin' those drums is hard to do It's true Nobody plays them quite like you do Meg White You're alright In fact I think you're pretty swell Can't you tell? Meg White Such a pretty thing Saw your face on the cover of a magazine Someday I'd like To take a walk with you Maybe ride our bikes down by the seaside And watch the sun going down going down
That says to me that you don't realize that just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean it sucks. I've been there, but you're missing out, seriously. I'm a professional musician, I've been playing/writing music my whole life and Ray LaMontagne is one of the best song writers to come along in quite a while. You should be lucky you got the opportunity to hear him, maybe give it another chance and listen with an open mind. I'd recommend Beg Steal or Borrow or Home for the Summer.
If anyone didn't know that/thought it was about someone else, they're stupid because the person to whom this song is dedicated *has her name as the title*.
The problem with Ray Lamontagne is that all his songs make you want to sing along, but you always end up feeling bad about yourself when you do. This is especially dangerous when you've got him on your "Romantic Dinner" playlist, and that special girl is over.
I don't know if anyone knows this, or has pointed this out, but this is actually a song about his infatuation with Megan White from the White Stripes. If you listen to the lyrics he says "I saw you on the big screen, oh jack was gene, but you stole the scene" and "Baby you're the bomb, oh jack is great, don't get me wrong, but this is your song" Jack is the lead singer and guitarist for The White Stripes if you didn't know. I thought it was pretty cool and might point it out :)
@scienceatheism Hipsters are just people who choose to express themselves abnormally. They're all different and that's how they like to be. Being a Hipster isn't something just anybody can pick up and start doing. It's a personality. And it should be expressed in any way it can.
@scienceatheism (the girl from glee) on her tumblr account (and linked on her twitter account) she had a playlist of songs she liked, and this was one of them.
@reachfanatic1234 Do you not understand that the people complimenting her taste in music is an indirect compliment how great the song is? Stop reaching for the negative.
@notsosmart Actress from the FOX show "GLEE"... and more recently "I AM NUMBER 4" She apparently created a TH-cam playlist composed of some really great artists. Worth a listen. Nice to see a Hollywood personality with some taste. 8^)
@JustinPlaysBass97 Sure, if you know the White Stripes, which by the way is not implied by association nor required to listen to this song. I, for one, did not realize the connection for a while, and found it an interesting thought - the curious question is "why?" Why did Ray LaMontagne write this about Meg White?
Of course, no one knows the man but himself(and even then...) , but Ray doesn't strike me as that type. he seems more like the, "FUCK! I'm inspired!! I gotta go write something!!!" And that something will be pure, and honest. When it turns out great, it ends up on the album. I feel about Ray the way he feels about meg white....cept moar.
Is he talking about Meg White from the White Stripes? Only reason I ask is because he continually references "Jack" in this song. I always thought it was about Meg White from the White Stripes but he also says he saw her on the big screen, and as far as I know (could be wrong) Meg White hasn't acted in anything... That i know of. Just curious. Love Ray though... a voice that comes around once in a lifetime.
Love reading comments about Meg's "childlike drumming technique"... yeah the White Stripes would be much more successful if Neil Peart had been there drummer. Take a clue from Ray...she was perfect compliment to Jack. He has a full band backing him up now and it is garbage. Beautiful song showing respect for a beautiful musician.
Marie Fischer LaMontagne was asked during a Reddit Q&A whether Meg White ever responded to the song. He replied: "She did, it was sweet. She really liked the song and took it the way it was meant to be - as an homage to her and Jack."
@scienceatheism Look at this way, everyone is different, then a group of people being different for another reason. Because they want to be different and unique in every way possible. Hipsters are the same in that way, but their personalities aren't the same.
He explains it in this interview: watch?v=ZjOlmRFqRUA The explaination starts about 4:08 He thinks she's swell and wrote it cause he's a fan and doesn't afraid of anything. :D
@zenben1126 not to pile on, but Meg White is a pretty big name in rock. It would be like somebody posting on a Chopin video asking "who is this Mozart guy?" As for why he'd write a song about her: he might have been gently joking about how many people had crushes on her. And I am sure there was a bit of self-promotion as well, wanting to tap into the much larger White Stripes fanbase.
Happy Birthday, Meg!
🖤🖤🖤
I adore Meg White. My boyfriend compares me to her a lot. HUGE compliment.
Love this!! I especially like the fact that he did the song in their style of music and used the same childlike drumming technique that meg did. And the lyrics are freaking adorable.
Indeed. The rhythm in the verse is reminiscent of the White Stripes style for sure. It reminds me of the song Apple Blossom.
Dudeeeeeee
Have not read ANYTHING about LaMontagne? He's one of the most earnest songwriters I've ever encountered. He's a man who abhors the spotlight. If he says he likes Meg White, then he likes Meg White. End of story.
Agreed ♥️
Nope. I like his sound and love this song. But even with Jack's approval...this ain't right.
Rays mom was my substitue teacher last year. His old house is right across the street of my aunts. Awesome.
He is my 1st cousin
I am so glad someone finally wrote a song about how badass she is!!!
LOVE IT!!! I Googled Meg White and this came up. Never heard of this guy, but I'm feeling this.
Nice

If they ever make a movie about Meg White they already have the title song at least.
I would watch it in a theater.
That's beautiful how Ray instructed his drummer to imitate Meg White's signature drumming style for the drums in this song. Meg White is so amazing and the best drummer ever.

No, it's creepy
No, it's awesome.
I think the lyrics beg to differ
Angela, please stop trying to SJW-ize this song. Meg White is amazing and nothing is wrong with loving her. On the contrary, it is her haters that have something wrong with them.
Exactly just a lovely supportive song of a lovely talented lady! Meg called Ray and thanked him and said she liked the song very much. I hear it as just it would be nice to be your friend. Great Song!
This song is so sweet!! I hope meg white has heard it!
I can't stop hearing him passionately sing about Egg Whites
That's how I feel. "Jack is great, but this is your song."
I love this man. Literally the realest artist in our century.
I truly feel this song, like it makes me love Meg White more than I already do, which I thought was impossible lmao She's such a Goddess
👀📸
My sentiments exactly, meg is a beautiful person in every way.
It's been a while since I bought 2 albums by the same artist in one go. Greats stuff. A voice to last..
A tune for Halloween .....brilliant story behind this song...kind soul Ray.
This song is very good! like the others and not to mention the artist, so talented!🥇
i...think....i.... have to buy all of his stuff immediately. how can one man make such awesome music? great!
Meg had birthday yesterday! Happy birthday Meg!
lol yeah.. thank you Conan O'Brien.. would not have heard this song without your influence may you live forever as the man who bested your phenomenal predecessor Jay Leno

He's been around for years! He's had songs featured in "The Devil wears Prada" and "Bones" Glad to see he's finally getting recognition for being so amazing!!!!!
This is the sweetest thing I've heard in a while:')
Awww I Love Meg White
Remember this tattoo artist told me a bit more than i had already heard about Mr. Lamontagne when I was working in Targets music section, listened to the cd for a week straight and now I understand "baby-making" music..........
I COULDNT HAVE SAID IT BETTER RAY IS MY NEWEST FAVORITE
First Song I ever heard from Ray Lamontagne . " Thank you Pandora ! "
such a sweet gesture Ray. lucky lucky Meg!
Bob Odenkirk made a movie called Let's Go To Prison and he commissioned Meg White to write a drum theme for Dax Shepherd's character. Against Odenkirk's wishes it got dropped from the soundtrack however it's on this Gossip in the Grain album. ahhhhh that massive drum fill around 1:10.... makes me smile whenever I hear it. Gorgeous!
Reminds me last summer in Maine. Miss that days. Amazing music and composition.
Meg White une fille exceptionnel jamais égalé a la batterie!
He is great! Saw him. In concert a few years ago was awesome!

thumbs up if Diana brought you here too.....yes dude we all here because of her, calm down!!
This is pretty cute and very lighthearted. I doubt Meg has to worry about with Mr. Lamontagne.
What a sweet song.
This song just inspired my new book!
What is it called
beautiful!
Meg White
You're alright
In fact I think you're pretty swell
Can't you tell?
Meg White
Such a pretty thing
I saw your face on the cover
Of a magazine
Someday
I'd like
To take a walk with you
maybe ride our bikes down by the seaside
Meg White
Saw you on the big screen
Old Jack was king
But you stole the scene
Meg White
Baby, you're the bomb
Old Jack is great
Don't get me wrong
but this is your song
Someday
I'd like
To take a walk with you
And talk about most anything
You'd like to talk about
And watch the sun going down
Going down
Playin' those drums is hard to do
It's true
Nobody plays them quite like you do
Meg White
You're alright
In fact I think you're pretty swell
Can't you tell?
Meg White
Such a pretty thing
Saw your face on the cover of a magazine
Someday
I'd like
To take a walk with you
Maybe ride our bikes down by the seaside
And watch the sun going down
going down
Egg whites. lol I love this song. I just got hooked on this guy. :D
Yes. That would be nice.

Dianna agron has amazing taste i love this song too
Jack Must Love This !!! 🤔🤣🌹🎵🎶
If you listen to this while reading 1Q84 you'd be amazed at how well it fits with the novel.
FAV OF RAY TO ME

I appreciate the support :) Was just trying to be helpful to anyone out there, who like me, took a while to figure it out o.O
obrigado pelo video - brasil
My mom used to play this when I was younger and I literally always thought he was saying “Baywatch” 😂
It sounds so fuckin' awesome
Sweet! 👍

@hayansupakane77 Yes I do. I'm a huge Glee fan. Thanks for asking!!!
I could definitely write a song like this about Zia McCabe.
Hrmmm......
@Jared7580 She is an actor, best know for her role on Fox's show Glee
@scienceatheism the link to this video was on her celebrity playlist
His voice is just so haunting...
thanks for the info. Always wondered why my nickname from my parents was Meg. Our surname being White!!
Love this song but how does it have only 500,000 views?
Because most people have no idea that this song even exists.
@scienceatheism (the girl from glee) on her tumblr account (and linked on her twitter account) she had a playlist of songs she liked, and this was one of them.
This song is how I feel about her and how I have always felt about her. My last name will legally be White one day because of her.
@reachfanatic1234 Do you not understand that the people complimenting her taste in music is an indirect compliment how great the song is? Stop reaching for the negative.
the person who said that she is the talent in the band
@notsosmart Actress from the FOX show "GLEE"... and more recently "I AM NUMBER 4"
She apparently created a TH-cam playlist composed of some really great artists. Worth a listen. Nice to see a Hollywood personality with some taste. 8^)

heavy Beatles influence. His songs have some complexity, something you rarely hear anymore.
@scienceatheism her tumblr page has playlists, her music taste is reallllllyy gooooood.
@scienceatheism Look at this way, everyone is different, then a group of people being different for another reason. Because they want to be different and unique in every way possible. Hipsters are the same in that way, but their personalities aren't the same.
@Adumantiumm "They" aren't doing anything. Ray is merely singing a song about the divine Meg White. It's a good song.
@robpavi1 yes it is. "jack is great is great, don't get my wrong but this is your song"
@KzrrainzYes no I'm saying how this song is great but the highest rated comment is about Diana Agron and when it should be how great this song is
He explains it in this interview: watch?v=ZjOlmRFqRUA The explaination starts about 4:08
He thinks she's swell and wrote it cause he's a fan and doesn't afraid of anything. :D

@ninjamojo711 just because you know doesn't mean other people do
damn ...i wish i had written this. meg white is hot :P
Is this song really about Meg White from The White Stripes? I'm pretty sure it is! :D
@JoBroMileyandwwefan true to that
@DeadWireProductions
Are you serious?! That's fuckin awesome!
@MegaLlamas1 No, she's awesome. It would be weirder if he was writing about the Jonas brothers...
is this the same meg as in white stripes....does anyone know
