Yeah, he's nothing like how he later came to play the part. I think he was trying really hard at this point to have continuity with Scarboro's performance but then must have made a decision at a later date to make the part his own.
Never understood the Hype around this Charachter. He was a dour faced fit. Forever moaning, scowling and complain. All with a big chip on his shoulder.

The role was recast because the original actor who played Mark Fowler, David Scarboro died in 1988 at the age of 20.
I preferred Susan Tully as Michelle.

Mark could’ve been a good hardman, he could handle himself if they hadn’t given him the HIV storyline, just like Zack in today’s Eastenders
