Thanks Heather - always good to learn new ways of doing things.

Brilliant - thank you Heather. Can you do similar joining if you had raglan shoulders in your garment? If so, I guess you would do similar stitching on the diagonal.

Yes, I think you could do that!

I just worked a comparison swatch using the Bickford seam and a seam used in Argyle socks that I recently learned from Harry Wells. Interesting! The Argyle seam fits *between* Bickford and mattress stitch, in that it pulls a *half* stitch from each edge to WS. In that technique, you never take the seaming yarn to WS, but loop around inner/body-ward leg of selvedge stitch, in one row and out the next. You don't reenter where you came out, as in mattress stitch, but go straight across gap between pieces, more like Bickford. (Makes sense when you see it....) - Deborah

Very interesting!! I'll have to check that technique out!

Would be really helpful to see what it looks like when it's done in the same color yarn! I'm doing a hat that I knitted flat and need to seam and really don't want the ridge on the inside but I also want it to look nice on the outside of the seam. Are there any other options?

That's a good point! Sorry I don't have a same-color sample to show. Another option would be to try a (neatly worked) whip stitch. It won't be as secure, but it will lay nice and flat if that is not a concern.
