Appli Monsters is a fantastic show and I'd recommend you watch it if you can. It's unfortunate that so many people chose to skip it, but a lot of different factors led to people being rubbed the wrong way by the show. Between the CGI forms and "Applimon" instead of "Digimon", along with the fact that I'm pretty sure Tri was being hyped up while this show was in progress (which would certainly catch the attention of the older Digimon watchers better than a show about modern day apps), I think it's somewhat reasonable that some people simply chose to ignore it. Honestly, I heard the show wasn't very good, so I chose to ignore it until much later. After watching it, I think it may very well be my favorite Digimon season.

So maybe by destroying the device they 1. destroy their bond and 2. destroy the chip physically which would kill them?? Anyway, just my theory on why this happens. I don't claim to be 100% correct. :P
