It's eerie to think that three other American women have joined the club of Olympic all-around champions, since this interview ... It used to be an empty club; but now, it's quite crowded. 🙂
Douglas was on the same gold medal World Championship team with Jordyn & Aly. She finished 5th AA in prelims after basically making the US team as an event specialist. What a difference a year makes. Surprised nobody saw her coming after Worlds?
Bravo Mary Lou, you're a great champion! Your performances are excellent. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart. With admiration and respect. Leo Cosma, (choreographer of Ecaterina Szabo, Daniela Silivas, Aurelia Dobre, Camelia Voinea & coach of Lavinia Milosovici).
Bravo Carly, bravo Nastia, you'r great champions! Your performances are excellent. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart. With admiration and respect. Leo Cosma, (choreographer of Daniela Silivas, Aurelia Dobre, Camelia Voinea & coach of Lavinia Milosovici).
Many share your sentiments, but I'm the opposite. As much as I adore Shawn, I rooted for Nastia -- precisely because 2008 was her only chance at Olympic glory. After all, she was going on 19, while Shawn was still only 16. As much as I admire daredevil difficulty, I also appreciate artistry, form, and execution -- which she exemplified perfectly. I see her victory in Beijing as poetic justice for Tara Lipinski defeating Michelle Kwan for the 1998 Olympic figure skating title.
I wasn't even born yet when Mary Lou won gold but she's one of my favorites ever. I've seen tons of videos, and I think it's safe to say that her performances were the funnest to watch out of everybody.
I think it is so ironic that these 3 woman hadn't even looked at Gabby's potential, probably never even heard of her - just because she had never won a world championship before. This takes me back to 1996 when Dominic Moceanu crashed on both of her vaults because of all the pressure - and kerri stepped up to do that one vault that CLINCHED the team gold for the USA. I think Jordyn and Aly both CRACKED under all that pressure in London - allowing Gabby to beat them both!!!
They knew who Gabby was she just wasn't a front runner at this point. Gabby was on the 2011 World Team that won gold she made the age cut off by literally hours. Gabby competed at the American Cup but as an exhibition the weekend after this interview happened. That's when she shocked everyone by beating Aly and Jordyn out of no where. Gabby was known to be a head case for quite sometime and no one imagined including her coach that she would win the AA in 2012 just 4 months later. Her goal was to be on the team at that time winning the all around seemed like a long shot.
Kathryn Parker She always had the potential to win though...She beat them at the American Cup, she beat them at the Olympic trials, would have beaten them both by over 2 points if she had not went out of bounds and scored the highest out of team finals...Then went on to beat the Russians. Jordyn only won because Gabby made mistakes...When Gabby didn't make any mistakes...Gabby was the one leading.
In October 2012, I went to the Kelloggs tour of the Gymnastics champions in Minneapolis Minnesota, and I was so excited, because I was going to meet Nastia Liukin. When I sat there, watching her sign my autograph, she had this face, that was like: "I don't want to be here at all" and I was super depressed, because she's one of my favorite gymnasts, but it seems like she doesn't want anything to do with gymnastics anymore.
me too!! everyone thought Shawn was going to win because she was the reigning all-around champion and the world championships and other competitions, winning over Nastia every time, I guess that at the olympics Nastia gave it her all, she only won by like .4 which is not a lot so Shawn was up there it's just minor mistakes but I do wish Shawn would have won the all around gold medal!!
I have to say out of all the girls at the Olympics - I was most Excited to watch MaryLou!!! I remember I planned my day around her to watch MaryLou ! Even if TIVO/DVR's were out back in the MaryLou days, I'd WATCH MaryLou and Tivo/Dvr the other two girls. !! = ) Yeah (even tho Tivo/Dvr's were not out back then, you just don't Tivo MaryLou... you watch her !!! Best ever!!!
well duh - this interview happened BEFORE the 2012 olympics began - not after!! and yes, noone expected Gabby to do as well as she did. I personally think the reason why Jordan and Aly both failed in London was because they both had a lot of pressure on their shoulders and they both clearly did not cope well with that pressure. At times, Jordan even acted like a child having a temper tantrum!! Very unprofessional. Gabby had no pressure and no expectations and she performed wonderfully.
its supposed to be the 3 olympic allaround champions it would just be a bit of an insult to nastia to leave the olympic champion out of it and put in the silver medalist and i am a huge fan of both of them but it would just be weird to have shawn instead of nastia
US gymnastics is on top of the world!!!! For the last 3 Olympics, the womens gymnastics AA has been won by an American - Carly Patterson (2004), Nastia Liukin (2008) and Gabby Douglas (2012)
Mary Lou had not only the skills and talent but such an incredible personality. Watching her compete was just so exhilerating. It was like she had no doubts and I loved watching Bela and her interact both of them are like two balls of fire. What a great Olympic game that was; I was only 13 and I remember how exciting it was to see!
Interesting how Mary Lou had 20 long years to bask in her status as the first/only American woman to win an Olympic all-around gold medal - she had 20 years to milk it for all that it was worth. But now an American is winning the ultimate prize every 4 years; bam, bam, bam - the exclusive club has quadrupled in just 8 years. Now these all-around gold winners are only getting 4 years to capitalize before the next one comes along. #firstworldproblems
One person on Olympic team member qualified this generation 1958-68 Olga Corbit is Naudia . Only one gold Metalist ..Olympics Ended. Matt should have done his homework
I love Mary Lou! She was a smiling little ball of energy! Still amazes me how clean her landings were when you see the girls nowadays wobbling so much. Not to take away from what they do, it's all amazing, but the Olympics is an ever-evolving sport and you have to appreciate that and take it into consideration too.
They didn't mention anything about gabby and now she won the gold and Jordyn and aly are great gymnast but they opened the door allowing gabby to beat them
Jeremiah Barbour Allowing Gabby to beat them? She beat them at the American Cup as an ALTERNATE...And beat them at the Olympic trials to further include she would have beat them both by over 2 points had she not went out of bounds during quals and had the highest AA score during 2012 team finals....She beat them even when they hit.
It's eerie to think that three other American women have joined the club of Olympic all-around champions, since this interview ... It used to be an empty club; but now, it's quite crowded. 🙂
Every time l see Nastia on the bars ....l just cant believe how GREAT she looks!
Douglas was on the same gold medal World Championship team with Jordyn & Aly. She finished 5th AA in prelims after basically making the US team as an event specialist. What a difference a year makes. Surprised nobody saw her coming after Worlds?
Conversely, many reigning World champions falter during the year leading right up to the Olympics: you can't rest on your laurels.
So cool!! Mary Lou's personality is infectious! LOVE HER! And of course I love Carly and Nastia :) All amazing women and gymnastic champions!!
I would be so star struck being with all 3 of them. Mary Lou especially.
So many questions he could have asked these amazing women and didn't. What a missed opportunity.
You’re a LEGEND!
Carly Patterson came to my school for career day today!
WILL-W1 she use to go to my gym
I live 10 minutes away from Mary Lou, and i've talked to her and she's awesome!

Mary Lou is such an amazing person - what a smile and bubbly personality - a true champion 👍
All 3 are some of my favorite gymnasts and it's so awesome to see the three of them together! Especially as all around gymnasts :)
mary-lou was adorable 30 years ago, shes still very attractive now! plus shes beautiful on the inside, just an all around great woman!
I wasn't even born yet when Mary Lou won gold but she's one of my favorites ever. I've seen tons of videos, and I think it's safe to say that her performances were the funnest to watch out of everybody.
This is a very cool segment. I woke up early just to watch it on television.
I think it is so ironic that these 3 woman hadn't even looked at Gabby's potential, probably never even heard of her - just because she had never won a world championship before.

That was awesome!
All of them are so cool
Wow, Carly Patterson is only 5'0" but she looks like a giant sitting next to Mary Lou.
Mary lou is 4'9
@@sahpire75 Simone Biles is only 4'8" and very compact.
In forth grade
Sounds like a great '80s memory. :)

nice story bro
When you realize Mary Lou is twice the age of Nastia...
US gymnastics is on top of the world!!!!
For the last 3 Olympics, the womens gymnastics AA has been won by an American - Carly Patterson (2004), Nastia Liukin (2008) and Gabby Douglas (2012)
If you choreographed Ecaterina Szabo's 1986 world cup FX, that was a brilliant routine, you did a great job on it!
Mary Lou had not only the skills and talent but such an incredible personality. Watching her compete was just so exhilerating. It was like she had no doubts and I loved watching Bela and her interact both of them are like two balls of fire. Jordan Weiver looks like Carly Patterson baby sister. I hope she wins the all around this olympics.
no she's saying she wish shawn had won.
Just letting you know you misspelled Liukin! This interview is awesome!
One person on Olympic team member qualified this generation 1958-68 Olga Corbit is Naudia . Only one gold Metalist ..Olympics Ended. Matt should have done his homework
This was never produced for television.
Waiting them together with Gabby
I have Mary Lou Retton's autograph. She came to the Victoria Mall in Victoria, TX. in '86 or '87.
So depressed for jordyn
Congratulations to Gabby Douglas!
it's too bad the interview was so short
Gabby showed them!
Mary Lou is definitely my favorite.
I love Mary Lou! She was a smiling little ball of energy! Still amazes me how clean her landings were when you see the girls nowadays wobbling so much. I hope you realize that this was posted 4 months ago.
Ikr, it's not liked she sucked.I think certain experts saw that she was gonna challenge Wieber but just didn't want to comment on it.
It would make sense since she's a power gymnast and Carly & Mary-Lou are to.
The average height for a female gymnast is 5 ft one inch tall (or short for that matter) and for a male gymnast it is 5 ft 6 inches tall/short.
No mention of Gabrielle Douglas. Just shows you, a few months before the Olympics, the pattern can change!
Aly had the most medals won at the olympics...
i love mary lou! shes so nice!
It should be Mary Lou, Carly, and Shawn. Just saying.
Around 1:18, and now Gabby adds her name
👍🏾
Mary's daughters are really pretty!
And...IF it were....you'd wish it were Nastia!
MLR es la mejor de lo mejor
They didn't mention anything about gabby and now she won the gold and Jordyn and aly are great gymnast but they opened the door allowing gabby to beat them
Jeremiah Barbour This is from before the Olympics. Gabby hadn't won yet and she wasn't really even a favorite to win.
Funny that they didn't even mention Gabby Douglas here. All they focused on were were Weiber and Raisman. Happy Gabby won!
mary lou has an awesome sense of humor
i want to be like all 3 of those women
