- TV series of British/German origin, and set in the "present" Earth of the 1970s. A planet from another solar system drifts into Earth's system and is detected by some Earth scientists who investigate. The surface of this planet is no longer habitable and the residents have moved to a high-tech underground city. The society is ruled by the women, who of course, are all beautiful. Men are considered mentally inferior and are divided into two categories: the "adequately intelligent" who are selected by women to act as their personal "domestics" for household chores, and the remainder who are forced to perform menial labor under the supervision of female guards. The guards are attired nicely in visored helmets, boots, hot pants, and elbow-length gloves which are used to control the men through some sort of apparent force. Scientists from Earth (one men and one woman) find their way to the planet, and are forced to take their stated places in society. The man is chosen as a domestic, sometimes is forced to work on a city maintenance crew, and the woman is assigned a white-collar job. The aliens also visit Earth clandestinely in their tear-drop shaped ship. Some episodes bluntly address the issue of unfair discrimination based on sex.
loved Star Maidens as a kid and Gareth Thomas was awesome in it as Shem
I'm about halfway through binge-watching this series online and I'm absolutely loving it so far. The bit in Episode Two when they run away from the first girl they meet on Earth had me in stitches! And eating the grass, lol. For a comedy it's actually a very well written sci-fi tale beneath the laughs. A good balance. Pretty good cast too. I've been looking for another worthy British sci-fi / fantasy show from the 70s to add to my collection and Star Maidens fits the bill perfectly. I've just ordered the DVD tonight.
Loved STAR MAIDENS as a kid. Also had a big crush on Judy Geeson. Buy the soundtrack it's groovy. They should do a new version of STAR MAIDENS.
Vaguely remember seeing this as a kid, shown on a weekday evening. Funnily enough, a C5 show about 70s TV showed clips from it on Thur night! Had a DVD with a different cover saved on Amazon for years. Not bought it yet as I have about 12 lists with 100s of items on each lol. This show will probably be a bit camp and dated but fun.
I know I’m a year late but I was curious if this is a licensed “pressed” dvd release or are these dvd-r discs? If you don’t know the difference dvd-r discs have a blue/purple underside. I’m in the US and the only release we have is mod (made to order) on dvd-r’s with poorly printed paper stickers on the disc. The video and audio quality matches the discs... I have a region free blu ray player that’s why I’m inquiring about this release
