  • I decided to set all three of my cameras on HD this time and set them at different zooms to film this B-17 starting up. I realize I all ready showed this taking off but if I didn't put that in the video over time I'd just get a bunch of complaints that I should have shown it taking off or flying....
    -
    I usually don't use my Casio EXF1's to film HD with but they actually work quite well. My Panasonic has very good image stabilization compared to the Casio's. I layered the clips from the three cameras in my editor and sync'd them up. I picked the best audio of the three clips.
    -
    Joey from LivinBoB (YT channel from my home town) was covering the Memorial Day flight and was filming a news piece for the TV station he works for. He got a ride in the bomber in the nose-gunner position- but almost missed the flight.

    My dad was at Normandy and one of the last coherent things he could remember and talk about before Alzheimer's took over was seeing so many planes in the sky at Normandy that it looked like you could walk from wingtip to wingtip. I can only imagine what that looked and sounded like.

    Back in the mid-80s, my crazy brother-in-law & I we’re out at Falcon Field, Mesa Az. Just being a couple of aviation attics, happened to spot old “Sentimental Journey “ just sitting on the tarmac. With little security on the field at that time, we walked around her , almost like doing a pre-flight. Then discovered the belly hatch was unlocked. Well, can you blame us? Yup! We jumped in! I made my way up and settled into the left seat and Denny was my co-pilot! After soaking up the “moment “, we saw a airport security car pulling up. We said “OH SHIT”! These two guys got out and we were stumbling out the hatch. (I’m sure we must have seemed like a couple of “groupies “ ) But long story short, they actually gave us a nose to tail tour! What a memory!

    Thank you very much! There are a few B-17's that tour the U.S. and it seems once a year or two either Sentimental Journey or Aluminum Overcast visits our town's airport or a couple days. My wife surprised me with a ride in Aluminum Overcast for my birthday in 2009. It was about a 30 minute ride but I'll remember it forever!

    Its easy to understand the love my dad had for this airplane. He piloted one of these over Europe in WWII. Flew all his 20/ 23 ? missions and the plane brought his ass back everytime. Last mission shot up, still the plane brought him back but cracked up during the landing. Spent a year in recovery, and never flew again, but he sure loved that plane. RIP to all the Army Air Corps who didn't come home from the war.

    My uncle died last year. 95 years old. He was a tail gunner in a B17, in WWII. Flew 33 missions. He was the finest man I ever knew. He would not talk about the war. I only learned about it when I read a diary he wrote to himself, daily back then. It was kept in his attic, unspoken of, since then. My cousin (his daughter) found it, after he died, and she wanted me to read it.

    • @ukexpat6893
      @ukexpat6893 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am sorry but the people in charge of the Army 8th Air Force should have been have been either court martialled for incompetence or war crimes. They sent thousands of very brave men to their deaths in what was probably the worst heavy bomber in WW2. The plane and it's designed method of operation i.e. daylight bombing without fighter escort was without doubt dumber the dumb. The B17 was a complete disaster they filled it up with large amounts of weight for the extra guns, people, armour etc. to make up for the lack of fighters that its bomb load was reduced to only 4,000 lbs on a mission to Berlin. They became a turkey shoot for the German air force. To get it into perspective an RAF Mosquito fighter/bomber, made out of wood with a crew of two, carried about the same weight of bombs to Berlin, drop them at low level with far greater accuracy and have a far far better chance of getting home. Even if the Mosquito was shot down the maximum casualty count was two men whereas the B17 may have lost up to 13 men. The men that flew the B17's were some of the bravest aircrews in WW2 but the people that ordered them to go were utterly despicable.

    • @garethonthetube
      @garethonthetube 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you can blame the design, more the way it was used. If the guns and armour had been reduced, (as was done later on the underpowered B29) its bomb load could have been vastly increased. Its maximum take off weight was not far short of that of the Avro Lancaster. The RAF realised pretty quickly that daytime raids were suicidal in unescorted bombers, so moved to night bombing.

      A man with a shotgun says he's going to kill your family, kicks in front door and starts shooting. You only have a 22 derringer, what are you going to do? You are going to shoot at that SOB till you run out of ammo then throw the gun at him and everything else you can reach. But you sound like one of those that would beg for mercy, yeah, it could happen. When pig fly.

    • @heathershostak7859
      @heathershostak7859 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas Hanson They did have fighter escort, as much as their fuel tanks would allow. After that, yes, they were on their own , and for what they did, B-17's are known as the Flying Fortress to this day, because of the bravery and fortitude they displayed.

    I got to have an up close and personal experience with this very aircraft last Saturday (10/26/19) at a car show at Falcon Field in Mesa, AZ (this warbird's home perch). 74 years old or not, I was blown away by the intricacy of the entire aircraft. Consider that when this aircraft (the model not this particular unit) was put into production, military aviation had been a thing for only about 25-30 years. We went a long way in a short time. Just standing under the engine nacelles looking at the turbochargers ...

I tip my cap and say a prayer to those who lost their lives flying in the '17 tough as it was sometimes we would lose 60 in a single day, when the P-51'a were able to escort the '17's all the way to and back from the target the losses dropped dramatically.

    i had to polish some firetrucks for a parade, and that plane scares the heck out of me.

      shonuffLA Dude there are worse things. I once had to clean and polish a couple of loaders and excavators that were coming fresh from the site for a parade...
      They were clean after I was finished, but I was black then.

    2:52 *Sentimental Journey* are those markings above that, the top front the amount of bombs this machine dropped or successful missions, exactly?

      This particular craft was built too late in the game to see any wartime service.

    Me 109 had a .50 canon in the middle of the propellor cone. For the poor spitfires it was fatal with 1 blow.
    German pilots used theyr normal guns to zero in, and once they had hits with them they activated the main canon.. (similar with some zero's later)

    Well of course a modern bomber is more accurate and efficient, but mind you these bombers got the jobs done in the second world war with enemy fighters incoming. Not only would they be cheaper to build now-a-days but they would also still get the job done in our current Middle Eastern "expeditions", and they would look good doing it. Sure a new machine is better, but this has some pretty fierce looks and sounds. You are right though.

    Wonderful, it's not as appealing as an R-R Merlin, but one of the great piston aero-engines and a great sound! And the state of that aircraft is pristine. I imagine the original "natural metal" finish has been treated somehow to minimise corrosion. Any info?
