Caran d'Ache 849 Rollerball Review

  • This is a review of the new Caran d'Ache rollerball pen ( amzn.to/3EJ5nfv ). It's a larger version of the famous Caran d'Ache ballpoint ( amzn.to/39wrw2n ) and Fix Pencil ( amzn.to/39ueFxt ).
    The rollerball uses a Parker-style G2 refill and is very close in design to the ballpoint, but it's about 25% larger. The rollerball sells for about 2x the price of the ballpoint (around $50 vs $25). The ink feels like a liquid rollerball ink but it's too far from a hybrid ink, so it's hard to tell exactly what it is. Anyway, it's not a rollerball refill so it's a bit of a confusing offering.

    this pen writes so beautifully for my taste, it has the flow and ink feeling of a fountain pen without the mess. BUT, and this is a Huge problem in my opinion. the refills DO NOT LAST. i’ve had this pen since november and i’d say i’ve written about 30 pages maximum before i needed a refill. i find that to be outrageous, especially since the refills cost around 7 euros each. i’m super picky about writing all my notes in the same pen for one subject, and i really don’t feel like changing in the middle of my notes. this is especially disappointing since caran d’ache advertises how many hundreds of pages you can write with their regular pens, why doesn’t this one even come near a tenth of that longevity, especially for being a relatively expensive product for the brand

    Surprised you didnt get into this during your comparison, but can you lop off the top of the rollerball refill to make it fit into the standard 849 since you mentioned that it's pretty much a parker g2 style cartridge?

    I don't get it. The ballpoint works just fine with Parker/Schneider/whatever G2 gel refills, so the only reason this one isn't called an oversize is because the Swiss don't officially acknowledge the existence of other refills?

    • @unsharpen
      @unsharpen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I have a normal g2 refill on my normal 849 as well, which is why this pen came as a surprise to me. I would agree on a name like the “849 XL” over rollerball

    The Cd'A roller refill is clearly a g2 standard, which already works fine in the original 849 pen if you align it properly (meaning the plastic piece on the back of the g2 refill needs to interlock with the four juts on the pen's metal plunger). So why pay extra? Besides, the fatter body of the 849 rollerball pen doesn't look quite as nice. Give me the classic 849, and I'll swap out the old Goliath for a Parker gel. Works like a charm. What I really would have wanted from Cd'A is a gel or rollerball version of the Goliath refill. But alas, instead we get a less svelte, significantly pricier version of the 849 that now "officially" fits a Parker-style refill. *sigh*

    I love my 849 ballpoint. I hate the refill options, but once I saw that orange I knew I had to pick one up. Wish the rollerballs came in more color options, hopefully down the line. With the wider barrel, did you be any chance check if the Schmidt P8126 fits in it? That would make it a much more tempting offer, I'm always looking for a new pen to take the P8126.

      @TheOccasionalGentleman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So having now just gotten my rollerball and extra refills it works perfectly fine in the ballpoint no modification necessary, the key is to press down all the way when screwing the top back on while rotating and thats all there is to it.

      @TheOccasionalGentleman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kateshearer9398 hadn't tried it until you mentioned it, and wasnt expecting it to work, but yes it does work albeit the tip doesn't stick out as far as normal because the refill for the ballpoint is shorter than the rollerball. Although I would never refill it with a ballpoint, it defeats the purpose of getting the rollerball to begin with. Overall the rollerball is much worse, its not as comfortable to hold and is terribly balanced it's extremely top heavy because the body has no weight to it and the screw top is extremely heavy. I would skip it altogether and just get rollerball refills for the standard 849.

    I have 849 ballpoint and indeed it's skinny and hard to convert using a Parker G2 refill. Caran D'ache refills on itself are not special. I prefere the Uniball Jetstream refill which is also available as Parker G2 refill (quite hard to get)
    So, I may do another try with a Caran D'ache Rollerball.
