Capturing Memories in Your Sketchbook

  • Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Even though last week I shared a sunny fall video, usually in November, the days are dark and gray here in the Netherlands.
And during those dark days we may spend a lot of time inside, at home. How do you stay inspired then?
Well, you know me: everything is interesting when you draw it - which means inspiration is everywhere. Even a ratty old t-shirt, bought many years ago as a souvenir, can be a very interesting subject to draw, because it can hold memories that you then capture in your drawing.
    Let's do this, shall we?
If you like my free weekly videos, then please consider backing me on Patreon. You'll will be helping me to keep consistently making Draw Tip Tuesday videos, and making them available for everyone for free:

Yesterday I put up all the Christmas decorations. I thought about how many items that are, how many different shapes and Colours. So I set up my sketchbook at the dinner table and started drawing. I hope to draw an item every day until Christmas. Good exercise, not only for sketching, but to focus and enjoy and forget all the worries for a moment. Thanks for all the inspiration, dank u well!

You really inspired me. I made a sketch of the toilet! The day after tomorrow they will start the renovation of the bathroom and toilet. I am very glad it will all be new then, but it seemed like a good reason to sketch the old situation ;-)

I love this idea. I am housebound due to illness and sometimes wish I could go out and draw like you usually do. This has given me some great ideas for things to draw at home! Thank you, Koosje!

I love the shirt - you should see my favorite t-shirt! It's over 20 years old, and has holes everywhere. But it's so soft and comfy. I've very roughly sewn the holes that are in embarrassing places, but I don't want to get rid of it! In the summer it's a mainstay of my quarantine life. Always in pajamas.

Before we relocated from Arizona last year, I let go of a lot of art work I had made and dragged around for 30 years. It was work I loved but over the course of that year I had sketched my entire house in colored pencil and much of my art was captured in those sketches which I put in a single sketchbook. I thought it would make me sad to give it away to other people but I felt liberated emotionally - an physically lighter. Very therapeutic experience.

What a wonderful idea Koosje, I will sketch my old slippers that are destined for the garbage, and the new ones taking their place. You are a true inspiration, thank you.

This is a great idea. I'm getting older and will soon have to move half way across the country to be physically closer to my son. So, I will have to start the process of getting rid of things. I think that filling a sketchbook with the things I will have to part with will help me. Thanks so much for sharing.

Before now, I have taken photos of belongings and put that in a special book with description. This is mad, but I don't know why I have never thought of drawing them. This is such a good idea and adds another layer of 'personal' to the collection. Thank you dear Koosje ❤

I've been to county fairs where some people have made quilts out of old T-shirts. They just cut out the image and make squares for the quilt. It's really interesting to see all the shirts at once. I've also heard of people doing this with their child's clothing, if they've outgrown them or especially if they've lost a child. Then you can remember which fabric they wore for their 4th birthday party and so on.
