I once found a jumping spider on my balcony. I gave it a small mealworm to eat from my colony and it started to attack it multiple times. Unfortunately the exoskeleton of the worm was too hard and the bites couldn't get through it (and in about two minutes so many ants collaborated together to take away the worm and the spider was there watching them stealing with a "wtf" expression lol. I started filming when it happened, so hilarious). So I tried again and gave the spider the tiniest mealworm I could find and this time it attacked it successfully:)
So I've been keeping jumping spiders for over a year now, raising a couple slings to adults, so I can try and help give some advice! I've found that feeding at least once a week works really well for adolescent to adult jumping spiders. Slings need to be fed every couple days. So if it seems like she isn't taking her food, she's most likely not hungry. *Unlike tarantulas, who will eat themselves to death,* jumping spiders will stop when they're full. There is also a chance she just doesn't like fruit flies. XD I have a tarantula that will refuse anything but crickets. She's a spoiled little thing. You can also tell when they are about to molt as they will reinforce their nest and will not leave it. Everything else you're doing is good! Some channels I would recommend is tarantula kat. She has a ton of videos about her jumping spiders and is also just a lovely person! Welcome to the hobby and be careful, it's addicting lol *Edit* Tarantulas can't eat themselves to death, but they can eat too much and become fragile.
Absolutely not also that Jumpin spider can will eat a adult cricket I have a Jumpin spider that eats crickets the same size my turantula eats which is pretty kool Give the Jumpin spider two crickets but I will stop there cause cause it’s looking like it may bust ..lol.. but still move very fast😅
Y'all are right. Tarantulas won't 'explode', I had read that on some care sheets and didn't realize it was a myth. Apologies for that. But they for sure can get very fragile with too much food and an enlarged abdomen. More susceptible to getting hurt or dying if they fall.
With fruit flies the trick is to put the flies in the fridge JUST before you want to feed them, around 5 minutes before. That makes the flies easier to catch as they're slower. Besides, Betty is gorgeous!
Right off the bat, i would suggest not use a water bowl. They can easily drown themselves in it, all you have to do is sprits it with a spray bottle once every few days and theyll drink from the droplets
So excited you got one, I used to keep a male and he was great! One tip, make sure you clean their 'safety line' webbings. Whenever they jump, they use a thread of web to make sure they jump safely. If these lines accumulate, the spider could get tangled in it and lose a leg. D:

Another small spider species is the velvet spider. They are like jumpers but longer lived. They are not too big and creepy and are kind of cute and round. They are harder to get but just a suggestion if you ever feel like getting another species.
You learn something new every day, are velvet spiders as entertaining as jumping spiders? Why nobody has bred these two kinds of spiders for size and sold them as pets is beyond me.
@@protocetid they are not as entertaining, but they are in my book a little bit cooler. I got a jumping spider some time ago at an expo and like you I thought I’d get a sub-adult as my first spider instead of a baby (except the one I got the guy had L1’s and I was just intimidated by that) and it turns out he sold me an elderly spider, so she sadly passed away after just a few days with me. I was devastated but I’m glad I at least gave her a good home for her last days. Definitely gonna look into spoods the side of Betty next time.
Got my hides from you a few days ago and I went out and got my spider. I'm so excited to see this little one grow. I think mine is a male, not sure. It's about the size yours was in this video, maybe a hair smaller. 7mm in length. He ate two pinhead crickets yesterday, the day I got him. I keep picking up the little cup he is in and watching him wave or wiggle his pedipalps. So adorable! ♥♥
I have a tiny one living in the freedom of my room corner. :) It does like the light enough to come out at night and poke it's adorable eyes around. Not sure of the food though as my room is pretty fly-free. There's another bigger one living somewhere on the kitchen ceiling. I've only seen that one once.
Bruh, I have arachnophobia but when I tell you I would literally buy some because they are so cute 😭 their faces are just adorable. I definitely prefer these little fuzzy guys.
keep your flies in high temperature high humidity! when your ready to feed tap a few into a smaller container and refrigerate only for about 30 minutes. putting the whole colony in the fridge for too long will kill them all
I have a tarantula and I've really enjoyed taking care of her. But when I got my first jumping spider I just fell in love. I realized then why people love them so much. By the way, if you start breeding fruit flies, you might like getting some dart frogs. I think dart frogs would be something you particularly would really like keeping.
Jumping spider feeding is certainly a process, lmao! My p. princeps, Bowie, is the pickiest eater. I'm a new keeper, he's my very first jumper and I've had him for almost 3 weeks now. Hopefully when he's older feeding won't be this much of a challenge.
Huh, I thought that jumping spiders always make their burrows on the top of their enclosure, hence why I heard a one with front door is recommended so you don't break it when opening the lid from top.
Fuck it dammit, you're the parent you make the desicion not them. & jumping spiders despite the name are generally harmless. Make sure you have a secure lock on the enclosure or it will escape.
How do you give them individual fruit flies? I just tapped a bunch into the container for its first night. Kinda scrambled for a container so its less than ideal but in 48hrs I'll be able to buy an enclosure and the goodies
Spiders scare the absolute crap out of me! My mom and roommate were bitten by brown recluses, I have nightmares of walking in webs, and I won't come near a pet tarantula. Dammit! I'm here because I want to own one of these cute little guys! They seem so sweet and fun. I'm going to name mine Peter Parker. :)
I’ve never owned insectivores specifically because having to keep a colony of crickets or roaches doesn’t seem like a good idea lol. I hate feeding my gliders meal worms but they get them. And I’ve wanted a jumper FOR EVER- but still can’t get over the worry of my house becoming a Duba colony.
I see a lot of people take them out of the enclosure. How do you keep them from running away or getting lost ? Or do you simply just have to keep an eye on them ?
just caught myself a wild jumping spider that had made the inside of my car its home lol, have a full enclosure and whatnot, i think mine is also a sub adult its not quite its full size but its also not a baby either i think. Just managed to feed him him a baby cricket this last saturday very curious little guys aren't they. They have such personality.
Looking to Keep a Regal Jumping Spider for 1st time as well. My issue at the moment is the temperature. My room stays between mid 70s(76max) to low 70s (69-72)at night. I Know they like it on the warmer side like 78-80. Would love some thoughts on this.
This is a great video, thank you!! I'm just now starting to consider getting a jumping spider. I've never owned arachnids. How is Betty Sue now? What have you learned over the last year?
Hey, do you have a suggestion for lights? I’ve been searching, asking people. No one has a good answer. I’m looking for full spectrum (mimics the sun), non-fluorescent, non-heating lights for my jumping spiders.
Ive had mine for a couple of weeks and it really doesnt seem to like to be held as soon as it touches my skin or leaves its enclosure it jolts and gets very hsrd to get back
Hello from Canada 🇨🇦 I just purchased my 4 month old female P. audax. I wanted to ask you what kind of plant is that in Betty Sue's enclosure? I also went online to Esty and ordered a feed bowl, hide and mini Groot from The BeardedShirmp, which I just love! I am letting my girl chill for a few days before I handle her but looking to enjoy her to pieces..
got 2 jumping spiders for the first time 4 days ago and both of them are refusing food. Tried fruit flies, a small dubia roach for the bigger spider and silkworms and they dont care. They are pretty skinny and idk what to do. I've tried ppls advice like leave the fly for a bit and let them hunt it naturally, leave them for a day and try again later but they just wont eat. Im wondering how long it usually takes for them to start eating after moving into a new home if anyone has experience
I think these little jumping spiders are so cute, but I am always confused. All the YT videos I have watched, no one seems to have a special heating system for their spiders. But in the shops, they always recommend that they have at lest 28 to 30°C in their enclosure...Maybe thats just a thing here in germany or something, i dont really know
To provide extra humidity during molting ,can you use a humidifier in the room ? But I live in arkansas and our climate is already very humid naturally, would I need to mist extra during molting in my area ?
So I just got my jumping spider , but she spends alot of time inside her hammock. I want to try n bond with her but I don't want to disturb her and force her out if she doesn't wanna come out. I figured I'd ask what you would recommend I do to try n bond? The breeder i got her from told me the other spoods are all in their hammocks now so they may molt soon. So I'm not sure if that has anything to do with her possibly gonna molt soon?
I will be getting my first jumping spider in two weeks and am very excited but I’m a little anxious about the feeding part though as I know nothing about how to keep the live food! ( and I can’t find any videos on this) Do I just buy a tub of fruit flies or whatever they eat at their instar age and keep them in the fridge? How long does a tub of flies last until they die? Also I’m in the uk so do I need a heat mat? There seems to be mixed opinions on this so don’t know what to do for the best? 😬😰
Congrats on getting one! I am not an expert but I think it is best to keep the flies in warm places such as an airing cupboard / reptile room if you had one and then before giving them to the spider you can put one in the fridge to make it easier for the spider to catch (you dont have to but it makes them slower and less difficult for the spider to chase!). So I would say just keep them somewhere quite warm or look up their lifespan and where they would live in the wild! Hope this helps!
hi i was just wondering I'm getting a jumper but don't know if i want a boy or a girl what happens when she is laying eggs? does she just stay in it or do you take it or what??? ty love your vids
You fruit fly colony hasn’t “ boomed.” It will take a few or more days and you have tons. If you don’t feed them before they can lay. When they “ boom” transfer some into a new cup to start the process again. That way you keep the food supply going.
It gets easier. But yes. A part of owning animals that eat live prey is taking care of the prey to. And alot of people culture/ breed feeders. Its a constant necessity recurring cost.
I don't recommend dedicated lights for most small animal enclosures, unless they are diffused with an opaque/frosted barrier. Try looking into those lights yourself, they are harsh and stressful. these animals are not accustomed to living under what is essentially a person sun. The best lights for them are going to be diffused sunlight, somewhere where the amount of sunlight cant dramatically impact the interior temperature but offers them enough natural light for the synthesis (from sunlight) of things they need for health.

Can't find a detailed description of general or species specific social behavior, if one of the colony building species does things like groom each other then theoretically they could be bred to seek and enjoy human touch. A minimum of one almost eusocial species, Stegodyphus dumicola, can live alone too.
@@protocetid specific species are social. The more common ones are solitary usually. I imagine a social spider could live alone if it needs to though.
@@Mothobius Creating sheep sized velvet spiders would also allow humans to shear off their velvet for use in textiles lol. Oh and your username and avatar check out.
With them we always massively stress out during their molting stages
I did enjoy today's video. Quite interesting. Thank you for sharing Betty-Sue moments. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you :D
I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a regal jumping spider for my desk at work. This video has been most helpful. Thank you!
for ur desk at work? no. needs to be at home in lighting and enough heat. u can’t control what the building or bosses do.
@@sissyjeannn WTF are you talking about? You have ZERO idea where I work and who controls the building.
keep your flies in high temperature high humidity! when your ready to feed tap a few into a smaller container and refrigerate only for about 30 minutes. putting the whole colony in the fridge for too long will kill them all
She's cute! Where did you purchase the enclosure, it's very cool! Thanks for sharing, keep up the great vids!
Found a jumping spider on my bike and idk how it got there but I decided to keep her so this vid was very helpful thank you!
I keep Tarantulas, but I must admit that she is absolutely gorgeous. That beautiful face is just too cute 💝
Just got one and another on way. I love them
This guy is so adorable! Makes me also want to keep one
They're super fun and low maintenance, and have a lot of personality :)
Betty is super adorable ❤
Thanks :D
Mine on the first was looking at me in the eyes he even turned to look at me and it was adorable
Aww haha, yeah I've always had a soft spot for frogs!
Fantastic video, thanks! This is really encouraging me to do some more research and maybe get our own spood!
Awesome, thank you :D
She’s so cute, I’d love one but my kids say I’m not allowed because they’re scared of spiders ☹️
That's opposite from how it usually goes 🤣
Fuck it dammit, you're the parent you make the desicion not them. & jumping spiders despite the name are generally harmless. Make sure you have a secure lock on the enclosure or it will escape.
@@meowthekitty321 I just need to wait for about 10 years and then I’m getting one
but wouldnt it be nice to help them with their fear by getting one :) ? being around spiders, observing them and learning about them can help a lot
aww that's a shame.
Hey spood mama! No water bowl for these little guys!
Keep the flies warm. I keep mine in the airing cupboard and always have food cultures.
Yeah they're now living in the reptile room :)
I just realized I think more people have seen your geckos than people who have seen me😳
possibly lol
Looking to Keep a Regal Jumping Spider for 1st time as well. My issue at the moment is the temperature. My room stays between mid 70s(76max) to low 70s (69-72)at night. I Know they like it on the warmer side like 78-80. Would love some thoughts on this.
Where did you get the enclosure? It looks exactly like what I’ve been looking for!
Spider is like... oh my god... 😬😅
I just ordered my first jumping spider...first spider ever. I'm excited a lil nervous
This is a great video, thank you!!
I'm just now starting to consider getting a jumping spider. I've never owned arachnids.
How is Betty Sue now? What have you learned over the last year?
have you checked out the jumping spider subreddit?? could be really helpful and you can ask any questions you have!
Awesome video, where did you get the enclosure from?
I wonder if Betty would enjoy fabric
Do you require a heat source for jumping spiders in the UK?
I think these little jumping spiders are so cute, but I am always confused. All the YT videos I have watched, no one seems to have a special heating system for their spiders. But in the shops, they always recommend that they have at lest 28 to 30°C in their enclosure...Maybe thats just a thing here in germany or something, i dont really know
Just adopted my first one. She is very small and cute. I named her Izzy. 😅😅
so cute
Thank you :)
To provide extra humidity during molting ,can you use a humidifier in the room ? But I live in arkansas and our climate is already very humid naturally, would I need to mist extra during molting in my area ?
Betty! 🥰
I'm getting a juvenile jumping spider this Wednesday
What brand is your enclosure?
My jumping spiders love lov the sun , I hav then in front of the window
I know they not poisonous, but if they bite me, would I need to go to hospital?
I love jumpers so much and want one are they super fast when moving around?
love you videos!
Thank you :D
I’m desperate to get a jumping PIE~DAAR! Just need to read up on them
What about heat and light?
@@fluffy_ Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it 😊👍
@@PIXIE6073 you are welcome!!.^^
Leon came in last night. He's in the terrarium but he wont come out of his nest.
She's very cute.
hi i was just wondering I'm getting a jumper but don't know if i want a boy or a girl what happens when she is laying eggs? does she just stay in it or do you take it or what??? ty love your vids
Have you a link for the light you got plz
Looking for advice pls.
im first timer here wanting tk buy an enclosure and adult jumping spider pls any help pls
Where did you get the feeding platform?
I can't get my boy to eat! I am very worried. His abdomen is getting thin.
You fruit fly colony hasn’t “ boomed.” It will take a few or more days and you have tons. If you don’t feed them before they can lay. When they “ boom” transfer some into a new cup to start the process again. That way you keep the food supply going.
oh goodness lol. I feel the flies are more effort than the spider 🙈😂
