  • Meet "Vango", our 1974 Westfalia that was parked in 2007 with engine trouble and recently became our newest project. This bus is 95% original and unrestored and in solid original condition. Watch as we take a closer look at the bus in "as is" condition the day we brought it home. Thanks for watching!

I am currently bidding on a Westie that is exactly like this one. Same color, year and all. Ugh! I hope I win. 😂

I bought a 74 orange also this summer. A good project also.

The body looks great! A real diamond in the rough. Have fun making it your own! I know I did restoring mine and I know I will watching you do yours :)

Pretty bus. As for "storing cold drinks" in the yellow bucket, I wouldn't. VW supplied yellow and brown buckets in Westies. Think of the bodily functions that create yellow and brown by-products and you're on the right path as to the expected use of the yellow bucket. :)
Excited to see you tackle the motor. Congrats.

My daughter bought a '74 Westy in Brilliant Orange as her first car here in BC about 4 months ago.......and she's called her Tango! We got the name from an orangeade you can buy in England. Her interior is in better shape than Vango's, but the exterior sadly is not! She loves her bus though and as she's a runner, she loves just pootling about in her while we slowly fix her up! Good luck with Vango!

Oh, and we also have a '72 Westy in orange too called Penny. Penny is quite far gone, but we will fix her up once Tango is done. Where in SK are you? We have family in and around Moose Jaw.

You are correct, 1974 was the first year with the double bed up top. The 1973, and earlier top opened in the opposite direction, and there was a canvas cot that could be opened up top. So, this is a big plus in 1974+. I hadn't even thought about the roof access from the pop up. Thanks for that tid bit! I have a yellow 1974 Westie that originated in Canada, then came over to the U.S. some number of years later to live in Michigan for a while, then California, and now New Hampshire. It's in a little better condition than yours is here. I guess Canadians take care of their VW's. :D What will you do to get 100 HP? Will you keep the Type 4 engine, and change the cam and such? I will check out your other videos, so you might have already answered that question there.

The earlier pre-1972 bus/bay came with a continental (double-bed) option.

That orange doesn't look as "brilliant" as it once was! If that motor needs to be pulled I hope to see an electric powertrain going back in!
