Actually, I’d argue that Browning does not use direct language. He creates an unreliable narrator with the Duke, as the Duke himself admits to having no skill in speech - the poem is a dramatic monologue. The Duke is paradoxical. In conjunction, the Duke ends on a metaphor, a rather pointed metaphor too. The image of Neptune wrestling a seahorse is figurative of how the Duke wrestled with the Duchess. The significance of the Seahorse is important. Only male seahorses birth children. This is reflective of the relationship between the Duke and the Dutchess; she never bore him children. It is also irresponsible to not mention the fact that Browning’s wife was the popular poet during their time alive. Browning’s inferiority complex towards women is present in a lot of his work. So, no. Browning does not use simple, direct and clear language. He uses direct address, I’ll give you that.
30:40 i disagree with the interpretation. The duke is saying that she treats his 900 year old gift (his name) as if it were the same as a bough of cherries, a sunset. He feels insulted that she is as easily impressed by these things as his marriage to her or his ancestry. Perhaps your reading of possessive love hinges upon this misinterpretation of this these lines. If you read it him saying she spurned his gift of ancestry, you will see the poem is about a narcissist who felt constantly insulted that a woman would devalue his dukehood.

At least the poem is a dramatic monologue, that Browning has mastered.
