As an atheist my entire life, I've always been one to argue that a world that only follows science and reason would be far better than a world that only follows religious teachings but you've made a really good point that I'm embarrassed that I've never thought of before. A world that ONLY values science has the real potential to create countless other monsters like Mengele that are allowed to openly experiment on other living people for the advancement of science because morality isn't taught in science. I guess that I must've thought that all humans have a built in sense of morality without taking into account how important religion has been to teaching morality throughout history. While I'm still an atheist, you legitimately made me sit down and really think from a different perspective so thank you.

I used to be agnostic. Live and let live kinda mentality. But in recent years, it's turned into atheism.

I'm sorry, but are you suggesting Mengele did what he did because his scientific morality was nowhere to be found ? How about he was a psychopath with no empathy development in brain whatsoever ? How about the fact that his post doctorate research paper was based on differentiating whites on bone structure, something which was used to great effect by Goebbels ? How about just plain 'racism' ? Would he have done those atrocities had the children not been 'jews' ? Science has no business being blamed for what he and others in his party did. His morality was nowhere to be found. Scientific or otherwise.

@ourworlds atwar Jeff Hanneman, like Lemmy Kilmister collected WW2 stuff and had an interest in what happened during the years 39-45. Just because somebody has an interest in Nazi memoribilia doesn't mean they are a Nazi. If we were to base this assumption on the song Angel of Death about Mengele we should assume that he also supported the mass experimentation and atrocities carried out by Unit 731 as the also touch on this on World Painted Blood.

The interesting thing about Slayer is they talk about stuff that actually scares people: war, terrorism, the holocaust, serial killers, etc. and they do it without death growls so even someone who doesn’t listen to metal can pick up the lyrics if they listen.

sadly, like Sori said, similar things just keep happening, and people turn the blind eye.

Most people had left the site, it was so lonely and bleak, and it was something I'll never forget. Some of the stories are horrible.......and inspiring as well.

Love channel guys, it's difficult to find this type of in depth discussion about musical content, especially in metal. As much as I enjoy your breakdowns of lyrical themes, I think it sometimes comes at the cost of talking about the actual musical content as well. While the lyrical content of this song is definable worthy of discussion, the power of the music behind it just as important (in my opinion). Tom could have been singing about how much he loves hot pockets, but that kick drum break in the middle would have made this song an instant classic anyway. I certainly wouldn't advocate changing anything about your channel or your analysis of a song's lyrics and themes, but it would be cool to hear a bit more of your take on the music as well (as I have seen in some of your other videos). Keep up the great work guys!

There were people in my church who would say they didn't ever get medical help for ANYTHING.
It was something I could never reconcile with my own view.
I totally agree, that wouldn't God want us to use the minds he gave us to use the resources we have to create these cures/science stuff. Just because we boil, mix, centrifuge the things that God created, it's still God's creation, right?

This was the first Slayer song I ever heard. Back in the day, people would go "cruisin" Friday and Saturday nights in my smalk town un Pennsylvania. Cruisin was just going downtown and drive around the main block in town. I went with a couple of friends and his car didnt even have a radio player but he had a huge boombox in the backseat and i remember him playing this song and when they got to the middle part which slows down I was like ... what is this, Ive never heard anything like that before and it was incredible. This was the stsrt of my journey into bands like that .... Slayer, Megadeth, Celtic Frost, Testament, etc. Til I watched this video and really paid attention to what he was saying, I never really put 2 and 2 together. I knew every word he was saying, but that's it, they were just words with no meaning when I listened to it, so I just wanted to say thanks for really putting a meaning to this song for me. I really enjoy your channel and especially the talks afterwards. You guys have really made me think about alot of stuff and I am thankful for that.
Anyways, I dont know if you've ever heard of either of these 2 bands but if you havent, you could give them a whirl.
For Today - Break the Cycle
    Sleeping Giant - No love
Actually pretty much any song from either of those 2 bands rock. A little story, I dont consider myself a religious person in any shape or form and I do question if I should believe or not but when i listen to either of those 2 bands (For Today and Sleeping Giant), I am moved by something that Ive never experienced anywhere else. I would love to see your reaction to either or both of these bands if they are new to you. Looking forward to many more of your videos. Rock on. When I was a child in Poland, I remember this older lady who lived on the second floor whom I rarely saw outside - she had a tattooed number on her forearm. . . one of the lucky Auschwitz survivors. No one can tell me that "it didn't happen" when you see evidence like that.
Japanese were just as bad if not worse during WWII when it comes to stuff like this - their infamous Unit 731 led by Shirō Ishii is one the most grotesque examples of that. There is a movie titled "Men behind the Sun" which is about Unit 731 - you can see the full movie on TH-cam here:
    th-cam.com/video/9orIdEh-yto/w-d-xo.html
I must warn you though that this movie usually makes the top 10 list of the most disturbing movies ever made so it might not be something that you might be able to stomach. Here is a small scene from the movie - if you can't take it then perhaps you shouldn't see the entire movie:
    th-cam.com/video/xFa81ROLvIw/w-d-xo.html
Interesting point of history, Russians wanted to prosecute Shirō Ishii (the Surgeon General who led Unit 731) but United States granted him immunity because they felt that he had valuable medical research knowledge. . .knowledge which United States allegedly used to develop biological agents which then were tested on North Koreans during the Korean War.
One question which Vin and Sori ask is how it happened. . . my understanding that in case of Jews in Germany it began with Jews not being allowed in the swimming pool. Considering this, when I see the likes of Maxine Waters calling on democrats to confront Trump Administration members and refuse them service ( time.com/5320865/maxine-waters-confront-trump-staffers-family-separation-policy/ ) and then as a result things like this happen:
    th-cam.com/video/UzasHXV4Wjo/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/qCuH6jt3fs8/w-d-xo.html

I’ve since gotten away from direct care nursing, but I spent 14 years in Hospice and Home Care and 4 in the OR. THIS song and discussion brings back one of my earliest memories when I was first starting out as a CNA. I had this one diminutive and very determined lady that only spoke in some version of Yiddish and Polish. When I met her she was fighting dementia and had forgotten how to speak English. One day she was following me up and down the halls only because it was 7:30pm and that was her bedtime. As I was helping her on with her nightgown I noticed a blackish-bluish tattoo on her forearm that was just numbers and letters. I didn’t say anything about it, finished up and got her settled in. Immediately I went to the nursing station, took out her folder with med. and personal history. I was amazed shocked at what I’d found, but suspected. Originally, she was from Poland. During WWII she and her family had been rounded up by the Nazi’s and sent to a concentration camp. This little old lady that couldn’t speak English, suffering from dementia that could barely talk anymore had been sent to and survived Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp🤯😳.!
I had actually just been standing in front and helping to care for a Nazi tattooed, female survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau!!😳🤯 Her file didn’t have any more information about it other than just stating that fact. I have NO idea who else, if anyone besides her had also survived. What I did know was that I was able to experience the rare opportunity to see, meet and help care for a survivor of one of the most horrific acts in recent history.

I wish more people gifted to study vaccines would be like Jonis Edward Salk. The man was quoted after he introduced the first successful polio vaccine by responding to a question of patency, "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" A true hero. One that should always be remembered and for whatever reason, we find it more fascinating to highlight and even at times worship some of the most terrible people in humankind.

14:18 - I actually have a slight issue with the statement that "science is not designed to answer moral questions". You rephrased it later, clarified, so it's probably just a semantic issue.
Science is certainly *not enough to do it on its own*, but given certain set of values that a person brings in, science [and more generally, an empirical outlook] is a great way to understand causes and their effects, and then the in/consistency of those effects with the values.
In other words, empiricism doesn't produce values, but it's a great [even though imperfect] tool to tell you how to best live with your values [of course, that would be true for psychopaths as well].
On a side note, empirically speaking people do differ in the values they subscribe to. It's probably both due to nature and nurture, but your belief in objective moral values doesn't change that fact. I could ask the same question - who's to say you're right about morality? In the end it all comes down to us, humans, living in this world. It's us who feel we have or lack some values. It's us who reason about them. It's us individually who conclude whether there are objective values or not. And we differ on all that.
19:46 - human body is madly complicated. It's not easy to tell how better your body was over night vs. how better it otherwise, 'naturally' would be. Arguably, it's just as good as it could be, given the circumstances.
30:30 - as far as I can tell, value is something intrinsic to minds. So arguably, there is no value to human life *outside* of aware minds. Majority of humans do value human life of course, although often selectively, tribally. It seems to be in our nature, which we can sometimes outgrow - through reasoning among other things.
As for the difference between humans and animals it's not always easy to tell - might depend on an animal. I mean, chickens are not the smartest but they are arguably aware [or at least we should give them the benefit of the doubt] and they do suffer. Most of the mammals are most definitely aware, have emotions, feel fear and pain as well.
The fact that we generally value humans higher [and I do too] than animals could come from a bias ingrained in our species, but it doesn't make killing animals right either. The fact that there is value gap, doesn't imply it's right to kill them. There's a special about the cannibals and not about the people eating at KFC because eating chickens is a norm in our culture. There are cultures where eating meat is taboo.

    SLAYER saved my life!
As a teen I was moved from the north and brought to the South the school that I was in I did not fit in at all I was not black I was not white or native American no one really would accept me teased and picked on relentlessly I had such anger and hurt inside me I figured one day that I might blow up or implode one day I was sitting in my room really sorry for myself wondering why I can't be like everyone else my older brother walked in and asked me what was wrong first off he told stop being stupid F them I whined back like a little baby and he said hold on I'll be right back he came back in through a CD on my bed listen to this so I did I hit play and the opening rip all the little hairs on my body stood up and I was like what is this it was my first exposure to metal Slayers music gave me something I needed and I stopped caring bout other people and began caring bout me and to hell with them I honestly feel that that one moment in my life made me take a different mental path Slayer and Metal saved me
    Also,

Josef Mengele actually died anonymously in my country (Brazil), after some time in Argentina and Paraguay, to where he escaped after WWII. I came to know Slayer's "Angel Of Death" around the time it came out in 1986 and got interested in the subject. Back then I went to my town's library and read a lot about WWII and the atrocities commited by the Nazis. Just like you guys said, it's a good thing music is written about historical facts like such, so it's not forgotten.

These guys are probably the most open minded and smartest Christians I think I've ever listened to. I've had the religion debate time and time again and my perspective has been that religion needs to be abolished. The morality argument is something I've never once heard and has opened my eyes to a whole new perspective, can't say I'm ever going to believe in god again, but I have a whole new view on religion and how it's necessary. Thank you Vin and Sori, cheers.
