It was great to watch your video on DC. We were there in May & did a lot of what you spoke about. We went to Dupont Circle do dinner one night & went on the Metro. We did go on the very long subway escalator. We also did the Air & Space Museum & Washington Monument. We took the Circulator and di the Capitol Building tour. It is a great city. We only just scratched the surface. I would love to go back again. We tried Potbelly’s for linch & did the Ford Theatre tour. We also took the Amtrack train from Union Station to New York. 😊

My great-grandfather was on the police force here in washington the night of lincoln's assassination. He went all over town trying to warn people that something might happen.
How he figured it out, nobody seems to know.
It's certainly not recorded anyplace. But there was so much publicity about it that people never forgot him. He became chief of police, then a councilman, did some wheeling and dealing in land, and became a millionaire.

Staying at the Intercontinental Willard - have you stayed here? How is it?
I have a Pentaton, White House, and Capitol tour scheduled. Anything else I just get ahead of time you know of? Is the White House tour worth it?
So much to do! So many options. Excellent video and I appreciate it very much.

For your first Segway ride, I recommend spending the extra money to do a guided Segway tour. 1. They know where to go, the really good places. 2. They will show you in actual situations what you can do, can't do, should do, and shouldn't do. It's more effective than just being told those at a rental checkout counter. 3. You have an employee for support in case you have operational issues or problems.
For example our guide took us to where "Deep Throat" would secretly meet; took our picture by the Capitol pond with our camera, etc.

I agree that flying into BWI to get to the DC area is not fun. Anytime I had to go to the DC area for work-related trips in the past, my boss always flew me into BWI since it was always the cheapest compared to Dulles and Reagan.

From DC and have lived here all my life. No one here calls it the DMV (that's a weird internet thing or something that transplants adopt). Fall is an amazing time to visit here. If you want to save a bit of money on hotels and want better food to eat, I always tell people to stay in MoCo or Arlington. The best restaurants in this area are NOT in the city but rather in the 'burbs. As long as you stay near a Metro and are in MoCo or Alexandria/Arlington/Roslyn you are fine. DO NOT be tempted to save money by staying in a cheap hotel in Southeast. I know people who did this and regretted it. Finally (and I cannot emphasize this enough) BE AWARE OF CRIME. There is crime here and it's been much more violent in the last few years than it had been in years. Keep your personal possessions on your body. Do not walk around with earphones in or your iPhone out and visible. Use a sling bag or something that stays tight to your body and carry ONLY what you need.

Fairmont Georgetown - Now $412 (Was $674) Four Seasons Now $1345 (Was $1,896). My impression is you must go at least $200, PLUS ripoff fees and "hotel taxes", and MORE taxes, or you'll be quite distant and/or have scary looking characters outside. No way I'd take my car.

Yes. It's convenient to the National Mall.. but you'll find the area right around this hotel to be pretty dead at night and on the weekends as it's mostly business travelers that stay in this area. But as long as you know that. It's all good

It's so nice now that metro runs to IAD. Metro is inexpensive and efficient.

Definitely see the Smithsonian African American Museum! Incredible, new Smithsonian. Today's temperature high, on July 5, 2024, was 97 degrees.

The food trucks park along the National mall.. maybe a 10 to 15 minute walk from Union Station. There's a big food court at Union Station too

Hey Chris. We’re thinking about trying to go to the 2025 presidential inauguration if Vice president Harris wins the presidency. Do you have any specific tips about going to DC for an inauguration?
    Thanks!

Hi Foodies. I've never been there for an innagauration.. but I'd book a speculative hotel booking that you can always cancel just so you've got something reasonable locked in

A few clarifications, corrections, and updates from a DC local:
-If you call the airport "Reagan," we'll know you're not from here. Locals either call it "National" or "DCA."
-The longest escalator is actually at Wheaton; and, it is the longest escalator in the entire western hemisphere.
-The Circulator busses are, unfortunately, being completely phased out by the end of 2024, although, MetroBus is supposed to be stepping in to replace at least some of the routes that they don't currently cover.
-While the weather here tends not to be as extreme as many other places can get, we do get almost any kind of weather that can be found anywhere in the country. (Yes, DC gets tornadoes.) One thing to particularly watch out for in the winter are ice storms/freezing rain, which can make walking around pretty hazardous. (Also, expect the weather to, more often than not, be just wrong for whatever you expect to be seasonal.)
-On the topic of food, I think it's pretty much malpractice to not point out that the DC area is pretty much the best place in the entire US to get ethiopian food. There's a huge ethiopian immigrant community around here; and, consequently a good number of restaurants.
-Be aware that a number of the Smithsonian museums, though free, do timed ticketing for crowd control. Check the websites for information.
-The Smithsonian Metro station is actually on Silver, Blue, and Orange, not Yellow. If you want to get to the mall on Yellow or Green, your best bet is the Archives/Navy Memorial station. And the closest the Red line gets is Judiciary Square.
-I tend to think it's worth doing the full walk around the tidal basin and checking out all of the memorials around there (the FDR is my personal favorite). Doubly so if you're here in cherry blossom season.
-The Congressional office buildings are open to the public (though you will have to go through security); and, every office has staffers whose job it is to speak with constituents who come by. Making the effort to stop in at the office is a pretty good way to get your opinions on issues noticed. (And, please push your representatives to support DC statehood. The way things work right now, we get no representation in Congress; but, Congress has the power to directly overrule anything our local government - the people we actually get to vote for - do.)
