    As a bike mechanic I always felt that my Campy Record 10 spd had the best feel or feedback of shift levers out of all the other options. I have seen far fewer issues of fray cables or broken cable heads with Campy shifters than others. Even though they do not provide as many parts for rebuilding shifters as they used to Campy shifters are still the easiest to clean, maintain and repair internally (as are their derailluers). Campy parts in general are more durable in the long run than others. Most models of Campy rear shifters allow shifting of more than one gear per swing of the shifter than others on mechanical. If all that remains true with this new group then it will be Campy for the win in gravel. If they do an electronic version then they need to work on improving their battery life as you rarely have to charge ETAP and only like once a year for Shimano but E Campy like every few rides. They had to do this to stay alive at all in cycling since traditional road groups are becoming less relavant every year.

      @@scottwashington7879 if you do it yourself it is. The expensive part is the labor really. For 11 speed and newer Campy stopped selling G spings and smaller parts and started selling the shifter body. So you end up moving over the shift/brake lever spoons, hoods and new cables. In those cases the lever body is like 80% of the whole shifters value so a lot of people just replace the entire thing. If you have a shop that is an authorized service center near you they can actually get the small parts inside for 11 and up saving bigger money. Derailluers are usually only worth replacing springs when they wear out. That takes like 20 years even on bikes ridden daily and a lot of people these days want a new bike by then. If you damage your mech in a crash its usually beyond repair.

    I currently have campy veloce shifters operating 10 speed shimano tiagra, which I altered to 1 x after the front derailleur paddle arm snapped. I have an absolute black narrow wide oval 50t chain ring powering an 11-34t casette on my current one for all gravel bike. As a grinder, I love this set up even though there is NO easy climbing gear option... The fact that campagnolo have made this new groupset is beyond a dream come true for me... having all those smaller sprockes and then the steep climb to the larger sprockets is exactly what I need. A 9t sprocket I never thought I'd see... I could happily lose some teeth on the chain ring now and keep my fast ratios. I would probably still use an absolute black oval chain ring though as for my style of stroke it gives me a menacing advantage.

  • @mrrodriguezHLP
    @mrrodriguezHLP 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not a gravel guy, but I think this bodes on the interesting side for the development of the road sets. Is Campy road going 13 gear? Are we getting smaller chainrings and a massive 9 tooth in the back? 44/9 gear ratio is bigger than 53/11. The way Campy does cassettes the spacing on a 13 gear could be 9-10-11-12-13-14-16-18-20-23-26-29-32. Match it with 44/34 chainset, the end result is a speed demon on descents and a mountain goat on the climbs, a jack off all trades road groupset.

  • @twatts4436
    @twatts4436 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Being a bit sad, I put the gear ratios into Excel to work out gear ratios.
    The 9-42 with 38t has a wider range than my current gravel setup of 11-32 and 48/32 chainrings. (Higher top, lower bottom)
    That's the first 1x groupset I've seen which does that, whilst reducing the steps between gears.
    Stick a 44t chainring on it and it could be a useable gear range for winter road riding (even a 42)
    This could be a genuine option which makes me convert to 1x for gravel. Still not going to happen on the summer bike though 😂

    Stoked to see Campy finally released their gravel groupset!
    My biggest question didn't get answered in the video: How many downshifts can you do in one movement with that thumb lever?
    Cheaper Campy models can only do 1, while more expensive ones can do several (which is my favourite part about the levers).
    The things that Campy missed in this groupset:
    - No spidering. If you have a 1x groupset you don't want bolts that can come loose over time. My main issue with them is even that 38T is the absolute smallest chain ring that will fit, while I would be interested in fitting smaller when visiting steep and high mountains on holidays (or when carrying a lot of heavy luggage while bikepacking). Also non-spidering looks ugly and outdated in my opinion.
    - The rotors don't seem to have any special cooling technology in them for long descents. If they're the same width I would prefer to ride these with Shimano Ice-tech Freeza rotors.
    That said, Campy feels better than any other brand in my opinion and 13 speed will indeed allow a bigger gear range with smaller gaps. I would be more than happy to upgrade my gravel bike to this groupset, al though I would keep my own cranks and rotors.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The thumb lever shifts one gear at a time, Campagnolo said this was a better choice for rough roads, presumably so you don't accidentally shift multiple gears. Note that it's technically an upshift (to a harder gear), not a downshift! Although we realise people often swap these terms as a downshift is actually moving 'up' the cassette. Thanks for watching!

      The nine teeth cog provides additional range without needing a huge size of the biggest cog. It's a disadvantage that new hubs are needed. I don't know how big the losses are compared to 10 or 11 teeth but it's the highest gear and on gravel or with luggage I don't think I'll put a lot of power in while using it. It would be more for pedaling along on a slight descent.

    Not into gravel bikes so maybe I'm saying somthing stupid, but it looks like they are trying to evolve a ciclocross bike into a mountain bike. Why didn't these bikes start out with a XC mountain bike base instead? I mean, just looking at it you can see it will eventually get a sloped top tube for confort, longer reach, shorter stem, slacker geometry, wider tires, and why not.. front suspension.

      Those bikes already existed, They are called cross-hybrids and i still have one.
      It was the best bike for gravel grass or urban riding. coming in at roughly 10-11kg with tyres very similar to current gravel bikes.
      www.cube.eu/nl/2020/bikes/tour/cross/cube-cross-sl-bluenlime-2020/
      basically a more modern equiv. to what i have. ironically they've become heavier.
      But a modern gravel bike with their road bike roots are just more efficient at high speeds. Obviously at the cost of more money and less comfort.

      You could absolutely use it for road if you wanted to, but the advantages of 1x are arguably clearer on gravel. Also, there's no real need for a clutch derailleur on the road.

  • @hansschotterradler3772

    Things are moving in the right direction. However, I don't see the point of this gearing as I don't see the point of the 9t and I guess it has a 10t sprocket on a gravel bike. I hardly use my 11t sprocket on my current 1x setup with 38t CR. Who pedals downhill at 60kph on a gravel road? Just coast and try not to crash.

    • @flyingsquirrel575
      @flyingsquirrel575 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would love to see Campy do a bit differently with the cassette; the 9 seems silly, so rather than expand the range just to claim a greater range than the competition - ‘well, SRAM now has 520%, but we have 540%’ ,(the dialogue is getting a bit Spinal
      Tappish “Our amps go to 11”), why not start with a useful 10 and tighten the intervals between cogs within the existing range of 520%, for instance. They don’t need to blow out the extremes of the range to make both a more useful and more impressive product.

  • @JoeJoe-lq6bd
    @JoeJoe-lq6bd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    There isn't just more mechanical loss with the smaller cog. There's also a loss in durability. If component makers cared about actual performance, chainrings and cassettes would be getting bigger, not smaller.

    • @Kyros9119
      @Kyros9119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is only so much clearance you can have for your rear derailleur with a huge cog. 50 tooth didnt come until 26 inch was completely phased out for a reason. No one wants a derailleur that rises 2 cm from the ground.
