I love this video, it's super informative. Only thing I was wondering is how big is too big? I bought a beautiful dress on Stillwhite, but it is a bit big on me. So I'm trying to figure out how much smaller it can realistically get with alterations. Following the designers size chart I'm in between and went with the bigger size.
Depending on the dress and silhouette, usually 2 sizes larger can be altered to you no problem!
The street vs bridal sizing explanation is so helpful! I've seen it on Stillwhite and I get so confused.
It seems like bridal stuff is pretty...wasteful. Why aren't the dresses made for the average height bride instead of models? It seems weird to me that most dresses cannot be worn without alterations. Is this kind of like how jeans are - to make them look GREAT, get them tailored, but technically you can wear them without tailoring?
It's definitely odd! At least it's the stylist's job to figure it out ;)
Regarding the height, they make it for people who are about 5"9/5'10". That way, somewhat tall brides can wear it without ordering extra length ($) and brides who are average height (5'4") or a bit taller will likely wear heels and only need an inch or two hemmed. For anyone else or brides under 5'10" wearing flats, you'd have to hem more. If a bride is really short (5'0" or shorter), they have to order it to a custom shorter height ($) because if they ordered the standard height, alterations would be a nightmare if not impossible to hem nicely.
Definitely similar to jeans except this is a gown you'll be photographed in all day so if it's not "perfectly" fitted you'll notice it in the photos for the rest of your life ;)
