      I just have a good advice for u, since u r based in Canada, and Canada uses the metric system...why u give the measures using the Imperial system=????? I mean at least give the measurements in both, the Imperial and metric system, saying so because there are folks out there that live in places like Canada where the Imperial system isnt used. Thanks for ur videos since u give a lot of good ideas. :)

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@user-ro1cs5hp5e As a matter of fact the imperial system is WIDELY used in Canada, specifically in the construction industry. I was a professional renovation carpenter in Canada for 14 years. I never once used metric. I don't think in metric, I think in imperial. Metric (length) numbers are mostly meaningless for me. And the reason I say I'm using 1 1/2" foam for example is because it is SOLD as 1 1/2" in Canada, all the measurements of building materials (well almost all) are IMPERIAL in Canada.....besides NOTHING in this tutorial relies on measurements, it's only approximations for an idea, you can eyeball everything just like I did.
      Also %99 of my audience is from USA

    • @user-ro1cs5hp5e
      @user-ro1cs5hp5e 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ok ok, no offense meant. sorry for my previous comment, just was curious on why, because when listening to other canadians they give measures using the metric system. Any case didnt want to sound patronizing or bossy.

    What an awesome build, my friend. Happy new year. I never new I wanted to be a crafting DM until I saw your videos. I did some things with a knife, XPS foam and self made podge. I'm gonna say this and I truly mean it. This is the most informative and useful channel that I've ever discovered. I used to build cardboard cities for art school projects and newly obsessed with tabletop wargaming. It's such a natural fit that I came across your channel and recently, because of your guidance on stepping up my craft, I've have decided to create a studio to make medieval and fantasy themed terrain and dioramas. I appreciate what you're doing greatly and I want to show it by supporting you on patreon when I get a little extra money. You've opened some serious creative doors in my mind and I can't thank you enough.

    I love watching you create such fantastic items. As I don't play games - I never have, even as a child, it might seem odd that I watch this, but I have made models, for about fifty odd years now, and you've shown me a lot of good ideas. Have you heard of the Iron Age Scottish forts called 'Brochs'? They are cylindrical towers with thick walls - and the occupants lived in the walls, leaving the centres empty - animals probably were kept there. There are a fair few of these towers still extant, some fairly complete, others as slumped ruins. Here's the thing, though: they all have a tremendously mysterious and sinister air about them, as nobody really knows anything about them. I visited a few, many years back, and they are creepy. Ideal for scenery in games, the more ruined the better.

    Pretty cool.
    Tip 1: I have been testing out a new mix for modpodge sealer/primer. I've mixed 50/50 modpodge ultra matte and modpodge hardcoat then and about a 10th of total of the modpodge mix, just cheap black acrylic paint. It works pretty good at stiffening the foam and of course giving it several coats (allowing each coat to dry) makes it that much tougher. I haven't tried testing to see when it doesn't matter giving more coats yet, but I use 3-4 and it seems to be enough.
    Tip 2: When you black washed the hut. If you do a satin or semigloss polyurethane seal, the wash cleans off the "flat" surfaces much easier and you don't have to worry about re-activating the underlying acrylic paint layers. If you use semigloss it gives the wash a little bit to bite onto without making it act like a filter instead of a wash, and it doesn't pool as bad leaving it with a bit more "uniform" coverage. But then you have to matte coat the piece to get rid of the slight sheen (unless that's what your going for).
    As usual, great video. Thanks for sharing. All you guys I watch here on TH-cam have been such an inspiration.

    Wicked buildings, and neat presentation in the backdrop!
    I learned some neat tips on this video! Thank you! In the spirit of sharing, here are some related tips that have helped me on other kinds of projects, with same and similar materials:
    •For shaping small things that will stay put: hand-shaping a larger crumpled piece of aluminum foil than you think you need, then hammering it to shape and firmness level. Masking Tape can be added on top as you did here, though a flexible paper mache (TINY pieces of coffee filters + acrylic gloss medium or mod podge) will last a lot longer (masking tape gets gooey).
    Works as much for organic details as for grimy-aged forged metal things. Not so much for hard-edged things that need to look freshly manufactured.
    •When using high temp hot glue for styrofoam, here's what I do: squirt hot glue onto a piece of scrap wood, and use a butter knife (or painting knife) to swirl it a turn or two, then spread it onto the foam. Enough heat has been dissipated to prevent foam melt.
    •If you ever need rougher-looking stones with super fine detail, you can start a cut in the general angle you want to go, then rip it with fingers or tools. I make more realistic stones with polyfoam (upholstery foam) in that method, in the same way, but faster than with the styrofoam. I go back with craft knives and snips of scissors, strategically for cracks, chipped/broken areas.
    I'm currently working on a 72" x 72" photo & video backdrop of fake stones in this method., because a larger project produced LOTS of bigger scraps of it. Buying this much foam brand-new in blocks for the wall would have cost me at HUNDREDS, so why waste it? But I plan to make more stuff like this, by asking for scraps from a mattress maker. Never make art out of a used piece of furniture: NASTY micro-organisms in there!
    Stronger foam protection: Either foam (and so many other materials!) can be made super strong against scratches and impact by applying three coats of casting neoprene. To save on supplies cost, I first seal the upholstery foam with a spray glue, and let it dry fully. this prevents the coating from penetrating too deeply in the foam. I use Creature Cast Rubber (semi-rigid). It's like 2% milk when out of the bottle, but you can use the thickener they sell to make it into a sticky paint. I use three coats, some of it can be applied as a texture (stippled,. lines) if needed. When it's dry to the touch, within the first day of curing, edges and summits can be pinched to increase sharpness. Or thin flexible things can be positioned and held in place. It really takes about two days for a full chemical cure, at which point the object will be stable and will want to come back to that shape after being forced. CCR is a perfect ground for acrylic paint. They won't get scratched off. I find primers on top of it PREVENTS the best adhesion. Yes, CCR is a bit more expensive at initial purchase, but it goes a long way, and seeing how many such projects you do, it might be a great investment that saves you money in the long run, compared to Mod Podge, which is weaker. And yes, it can be tinted with pigments and acrylics too.
    If you don't need the upholstery foam stones to be super realistic, and want them to remain super soft and squishy (avalanche scenes or fake prank throwing stones anyone?) you can color the foam with water-based wood stain.
