      Is the shift solenoid on the outside of the tranny? Or is this a part where you have to tear into the whole tranny? I have a 1999 Civic with about 226k miles and it slips going between 2nd and 3rd.

    Check the vtec solenoids transmission shift solenoids o2 sensors transmission filter, check fuel pressure. Fuel filter. Crank position sensors, Timing belt . Worst comes to worst your transmission has gone out. Or something brought it to limp mode.

    I have a 2002 civic automatic that does this weird thing where I'll feel a little jolt as it changes to 4th gear. It's like the RPMs drop to 2k then a second or two later I'll get this split-second jump and the needle drops back between 1&2k. From what I understand and have heard from mechanics is that the trans in these are just poorly built and they do that. Also hard upshifts in the summer and an occasional clunk when giving it gas in the middle of an upshift in low gear

    it's because honda has a clutch that engages around 60mph and the transmission kind of makes it drop into the clutch and it's actually a clutch that helps with gas mileage you can look it up its specifically for highway miles and such.

    I did an engine swap on my Civic 2000 EX and since then the transmission has been acting weirdly. Before the swap it was perfect. When I'm loose on the gas pedal the gears shift just fine, as long as I'm below 3000 rpm. The moment i accelerate hard, the gear slips and gas pedal all of a sudden feels very soft. I need to bring my car to almost a stop and only then it will engage the first and move normally. Moreover, if I'm stuck in traffic, the gears shift with a small jerk. The transmission is S40 and put in ATF fluid when the engine was swapped. Do i need to swap the transmission? I'm getting a S4MA transmission in a great bargain.

    • @Blakecryderman7244
      @Blakecryderman7244 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCRTman I’m just saying how some Corollas make it to 350K+ miles and some go over 200K miles. From what I’ve seen working on cars, the average 9th gen Corolla lasts about 250-280,000 miles with 50/50 city & highway driving throughout lifespan. But that certainly doesn’t mean that it can’t last longer remember I’m saying “average“ well there’s a handful of Toyota owners out there that take really good care of their car, better than the average joe does, & their Corolla will probably last a lot longer make it past 300K miles. For example, I saw a little old Tercel (1995) with 500,000 km (310,000 miles), for sale in Quebec, it said the owner changed the oil himself every 5000 miles religiously since the car was new. No wonder it lasted. If you did a compression test on it it would’ve still probably had 150PSI across all 4 cylinders. Pretty good. Regular maintenance goes a LONG LONG way for a car’s lifespan. If you want to know how much life your Corollas engine has in it then do a compression test. I always tell that to owners that wonder, “how much longer will my car last?”

  • @Wiikendzgoodmix
    @Wiikendzgoodmix 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I've been watching several videos on how automatics work and I only have one idea.. maybe you have solved it but Ill tell you what I think anyways:
    As you proberbly know auto transmissions use clutches to stop / give power to certain sun gears, planet carriers and ring gears. When it shift and jumps in rpm like that make me believe the clutch for that ratio is slow. I dont know the transmission type but get a service paper and see what clutches engage/disengage at certain gears. For example: Clutch C2 and C5 is used for 4th gear, in 3rd its C2 and C4. The C2 clutch would set the car into neutral if engaged alone. Now if the C5 clutch is used for 4th gear and its slow to engage the engine might be in neutral as the C2 clucth will be engaged by itself between the C4 and C5 clutch change. And because of the gearbox being in neutral for a longer period of time the engine will have no resistence anf therefor the rpm goes up before the C5 clutch get engaged fully.
    This is just my thought, im 16 and I have no experience with auto transmissions what so ever but I am interested and I watched a 1 hour class about how they work. I am from Sweden and it was in english so it might be possible that I misunderstood something and if there is anything wrong in the text that might be bacause im Swedish. I hope its fixed already, if not, I hope this can atleast help a little :)

      On Honda's it's usually a restricted internal filter and or a loss of fluid pressure (worn internal seal). My 03 Civic A/T has been doing it for 2 years now and has 218,000 miles, for some reason it doesn't do it as bad in the summer (much hotter). It shifts fine manually so I do that.

      i bought an used transmission from a company that buys used tranny from Japan, i had a friend help me put it in, no good, had to get another one, fortunately they warranted their tranny. The second one, the gear ratio didn't match, so the co. took it to a tranny shop, they rebuilt my original one. Now after driving it about 6000 miles, i still keep getting code p1705. I changed my ECU, the multi gear switch(bought both in junk yard, i believe they are still good- took apart the switch, looks ok, had the ecu reprogrammed by Honda dealer). But i still get the 1705 code. Last thing to address, planning to keep the Honda till i can't drive anymore, maybe get buried in it, spent too much time, money on the donkey. totally FRUSTRATED! got any clue where the short might be in the gear switch? thnx much army buddy!!!

      +Andre Dial I'm glad I read about the "JDM" transmission before I went through with the repair. They advertise them for cheap compared to North American built ones. I mean $350 for a Japanese trans with 35k miles, or $650 for a North American trans with 100k miles? Luckily I saw another seller put a disclaimer up that the transmission "might" throw a Check Engine Light code. Well if it does that, good luck with passing your safety inspection.
      Further research shows many people with the same issue. I think it has to do with the Japanese transmission have a D1, D2, D3, and D. The North American one has D2, D3, D. This causes the ECU to throw a code when going 50mph on the highway. Not sure what others did, but they had to swap out a lot of their old stuff to try and get it to work.
      JDM transmissions are an absolute scam, and I hate to see people buy them and get screwed like I almost did.

      had my transmission rebuilt for the second time. spent $1500 with a two year warranty. the T people spent a total of 6 hrs trying to locate the source of the P1705. Until i find the source of the code, i have installed a wooden block to keep it from downshifting to D3 or 2. Looks tacky as hell, but i am totally lost. If the T people can't locate the source, although i am an electrician by trade, how am i gonna have any luck with it. I hope i can get my tab this year. fortunately, i don't have to get an emission test this year. Any clues out there? thnx
