I visited the U.K. for a couple of weeks over the Summer. I miss waking up and getting dressed with Channel 4 on in the mornings. Waking up to Cheers and Everyone loves Raymond. That's quality. And I miss the U.K. it's lush greenery and history. It was amazing. Much love from America. Y'all have a beautiful country.
To be fair though these idents are fantastic, The creativity of the the character made from the blocks of the 4 logo and the nod to Channel 4's past with Fourscore nostalgic and modern at the same time so well done a huge step up from 2015
A massive improvement on the last set. Lovely to hear that Fourscore has made a return. The previous idents were quite boring in retrospect; these new ones are hilarious and are a breath of fresh air.
I'm transfixed whenever that football in the street one comes on, at the kids' skills and bravado. So gutted I moved from a terraced house with loads of kids my age around when I was 7, first to a boring road of semis full of retired people, then at 12 on to an even more boring and isolated village!
I thought i was the only one with this specific memory, i remember when i was a bit younger hearing these in the evening especially the football one excited to go to sleep because i was excited to go swimming the next day :)
I liked the old ones with the crystals and the caves. The music was really moving. These are okay too, but are just a little too reminiscent of that robot from Interstellar.
The ident where ‘4’ kicks the ball through the window is on the corner of Cecil Street and Cardigan Street in Wavertree Liverpool. It’s a few streets away from where Leonard Rossiter was born in Cretan Street and half a mile away from George Harrison’s childhood home in Arnold Grove, around a mile away is John Lennon’s childhood home in Newcastle Road and around the corner to that house is Penny Lane !
They've missed a trick with the break bumpers. They should've been the classic 82-96 coloured blocks on a black background! Someone should make a mock of it. The Paralympic one is brilliant, I think the 4man is running like Richard Whitehead!
Eh, they're alright. Personally I've always gone for a 1999 feel, but some bits in this compilation were quite humorous and well thought out. I definitely think that these are better than the last batch as they feel like thought has gone into them. Hats off.

Question, when the children fall down 0:35+ , How would that have been done without injury? As the kids clearly fall straight down, many right onto their faces... And certainly with little instinctive fall protection from their arms? --- CGI?
I have been wondering about the technical wizardry of the children falling for ages, obviously they have mattresses, but even so, it's very clever. Also the timings in the football indent are amazing. And like others, I am not happy about the people smuggling one.
Oh, I'm really surprised that Channel 4 have rebranded their idents so soon. That's interesting. I thought I detected a wobble when they reinstated the logo in their programme trailers, but I didn't think they'd go as far as to completely overhaul the ident package. So the previous package clocked in just over two years, which makes it the shortest lived package in the channel's history. And perhaps the shortest in British TV history? When you factor in the development time for the new package, it's clear that Channel 4 waved the white flag very quickly indeed on the 2015 package. What do I make of these idents? I don't know, really. Mixed feelings. Tremendous hearing Fourscore reinstated. And the idents initially strike me as pleasingly quirky and mildly amusing. But then I get a bitter after taste. Is the humorous tone fitting to precede every show? What the hell is that giant even all about? And, oh, whoops, there's an underlying social agenda being forced down our throats. I have to wonder, did the Channel 4 blocks concept peak with the 2005 - 2015 idents? And perhaps the problem with this new package, is that they don't actually address the issue of storytelling idents only being interesting the first time you view them. I can praise them for swiftly moving on from a package which they felt didn't work, and can only hope that it sends a message to BBC One with their universally despised 'Oneness' package, and to Channel 5 with their boring Channel 4 copycat logoless package, which now looks very embarrassing indeed, given Channel 4's action. And at least they are not afraid to try out something new, which puts them in a commanding position over BBC Two at this moment. I think the problem is, Channel 4 don't actually know where to take their identity. And for all the creativity, perhaps a simple logo formation sequence has more impact than anything else.
I feel like I must be the only person who loved the old idents, with the mica levi soundtracks. They were so out there and unique and arty. I guess they definitely catered more to designers and film students than anyone else but it always surprised me how much they seemed to frustrate people who didn't "get" them. The quarry detonating one gave me 2001: a space odyssey vibes, I liked the vagueness of them. But from a marketing point I can see how the previous idents were "bad", in that they didn't really do their job well enough, and didn't seem to have the right audience in mind, which is really the most important thing in commercial design.
I think the previous idents were very creative and ambitious, and I do admire Channel 4 taking a risk with them. It's a stark contrast to BBC Two, who have submitted to reverting to a 25 year old package. Maybe a concept so avant garde would have had more impact in the earlier years of Channel 4, but the problem with them in today's TV climate is that with something like 50 channels available on even the most basic set up of Freeview, attention is thin in the ground. And you needed to pay an awful lot of attention to appreciate what was actually going on in those. As you say, I think it appealed to a 'type' of person. I think that type were more your average Channel 4 viewer back in the 80's. But the content of the channel is now very populist and mainstream, I suspect that an elder person tuning in with a cup of tea and a biscuit for a bit of Countdown or GBBO would not have understood them even if you'd sat and explained them in great depth. To the average viewer, they are just confusing short films which may not even register as being an ident of any kind. I think a lot of good emerged from the overall package. The deconstructed blocks which flow through trailers, break bumpers etc were really strong. In fact, I think they may have now made a mistake in restoring the formed logo in them. But with the new idents in town, I think there's a clash. My mind is torn on whether I like them or not. I suspect we've already seen the limit of their potential and I suspect that due to their underlying box ticking agenda, Channel 4 will stick with them far longer than they are welcome.
As the channel's content goes more and more mainstream, so the idents have gotten more and more abstract. It's as though they are overcompensating to retain the station's image without producing any of the alternative market programming it was set up to provide in the first place. These idents are okay, I somewhat liked them when I first saw them, but how many times do you reckon you can watch those same four short films before you get sick of them? And yes, won't one of these just set the tone for a hard hitting documentary on corruption, abuse, murder etc? Many years ago, during the height of the troubles in Ireland, Ulster TV realised the importance of an ident being flexible enough to be used to introduce all manner of content, from Coronation Street to an urgent newsflash. Just a static card with the logo, no music, nothing. And whilst Channel 4 can perhaps be allowed to enjoy more freedom than that, you do still have to consider how inappropriate it might be to see these jolly idents linking into programming on a bad news day, such as the recent wave of terrorist attacks we've seen in the country.
I think the danger with these idents is that they paint Channel 4 into a corner. As a public service broadcaster, they really need to base their overall theme upon a generic ident which simply communicates the brand. Then build upon that in all manner of playful ways, but allow the tone to naturally be taken down to a more neutral state when need be. I'm thinking of the stripes look of the early 2000's when I say that. Not my favourite set, I must admit, but I thought they were very much fit for purpose. I recall when BBC One had the dancer idents, news broke of the death of the Queen Mother and they could only resort to a hastily cobbled together still image of the least happy ident in the set. They didn't have a news clock to resort to, a plain ident, nothing. Whereas in the late 90's, when news broke of the fatal car crash which killed the Princess Of Wales, they didn't hesitate to bring up the globe. The same globe which led into Noel's House Party, The Generation game etc. If serious news broke today, Channel 4 don't really have anything in the standard set which would be appropriate. It would be the BBC's Queen Mother scenario all over again.

These idents are like a parody of middle class people's erroneous ideas about themselves. The one with the wheelchair racers and 4 score becoming exhausted and leaning on the streetlight is condescending in the manner of Chris Morris on Brass Eye losing the armwrestling contest to the gay man - but it's the one with the immigrants that is truly astonishing. The moral condescension and the self delusion of that thing is breathtaking. One with a stethoscope to contribute to your healthcare system - one with a theodolite to build your houses - and Channel 4 - which is a tv broadcaster - saving them all from a watery grave. It's not just what channel 4 thinks it is that is revealed by this advert - a kind of institutional dysmorphia that implies the whole organisation needs collective long term therapy - it's what it aspires to be - not a tv channel, but rather some sort of Scarlet Pimpernel organisation operating an underground railroad for the disenfranchised and vulnerable. Getting moral lectures from that class which is wiping life from the face of the earth at a rate unprecedented in human history is nothing new - but they're seldom so nauseatingly delivered.

Tommy Smith your comment about “illegal immigration” seems in reference to the ongoing refugee crisis, and it’s likely this ident was at least in part meant to represent it. Secondly, is that “first safe country” thing a law? If so, could you source it? It seems to me that’d pose a big problem in a refugee crisis because one country would be stuck with more refugees than they probably can handle.
Speaking as a Yank, sonic branding and visual branding are a big deal in the states, especially the famous NBC chimes and peacock. I understand the direction Channel 4 wanted to go two years ago - not showing what channel the viewer is watching, but why they’re watching it - but as bold as it is, the idents left me puzzled. In addition, knowing their history, I feel only C4 could’ve gotten away with this for so long - any broadcaster here would’ve been gutted like a fish had they took a similar direction. I’m glad C4 have gradually resurrected their visual branding by those small glimpses of the logo for bumpers and trailer end pieces, but I’m also glad they’re evolving their idents sonically by the return of Fourscore, and bringing about a metal giant who only “speaks” that mnemonic in foghorn mode. Even though the signature was not there for more time than it was for the channel’s 35-year-history, keeping it on there will make for excellent brand reinforcement. Oh, and to those complaining about that 4th ident, you can kick rocks. Diversity always played a part in C4’s history too. And besides, the giant’s Fourscore foghorn confusing the other ships - or is it leading a symphony of horns - makes for a funny ending.
In a Geordie dialect- "Tonight on 4, we'll be showing some Northern people yelling about their poverty. The programme contains very strong language and some nudity."
Now replace that with Israel or Japan or any other Country that isn't European. Yep, totally different. Wake up people, this is more nerve than a toothache.
The final one is a very odd choice. Surely even if you pro immigration you'd concede that immigration should be done via the appropriate processes allowing for adequate back ground checks to take place and to ensure skill needs are met. Surely no one thinks that crossing the channel in tiny vessels that are not sea worthy should be promoted and celebrated?

channel 4 have pretty unique idents it has to be said.
1st one feels like E4? but the 3rd one fits perfectly for your disability sports coverage like the paralympics.
It does feel very similar to one of the idents used on E4, but it still holds its charm.

Oh, I'm really surprised that Channel 4 have rebranded their idents so soon. That's interesting. I thought I detected a wobble when they reinstated the logo in their programme trailers, but I didn't think they'd go as far as to completely overhaul the ident package. So the previous package clocked in just over two years, which makes it the shortest lived package in the channel's history. And perhaps the shortest in British TV history? When you factor in the development time for the new package, it's clear that Channel 4 waved the white flag very quickly indeed on the 2015 package.
What do I make of these idents? I don't know, really. Mixed feelings. Tremendous hearing Fourscore reinstated. And the idents initially strike me as pleasingly quirky and mildly amusing. But then I get a bitter after taste. Is the humorous tone fitting to precede every show? What the hell is that giant even all about? And, oh, whoops, there's an underlying social agenda being forced down our throats. I have to wonder, did the Channel 4 blocks concept peak with the 2005 - 2015 idents? And perhaps the problem with this new package, is that they don't actually address the issue of storytelling idents only being interesting the first time you view them.
I can praise them for swiftly moving on from a package which they felt didn't work, and can only hope that it sends a message to BBC One with their universally despised 'Oneness' package, and to Channel 5 with their boring Channel 4 copycat logoless package, which now looks very embarrassing indeed, given Channel 4's action. And at least they are not afraid to try out something new, which puts them in a commanding position over BBC Two at this moment.
I think the problem is, Channel 4 don't actually know where to take their identity. And for all the creativity, perhaps a simple logo formation sequence has more impact than anything else.
I feel like I must be the only person who loved the old idents, with the mica levi soundtracks. They were so out there and unique and arty. I guess they definitely catered more to designers and film students than anyone else but it always surprised me how much they seemed to frustrate people who didn't "get" them. The quarry detonating one gave me 2001: a space odyssey vibes, I liked the vagueness of them.
But from a marketing point I can see how the previous idents were "bad", in that they didn't really do their job well enough, and didn't seem to have the right audience in mind, which is really the most important thing in commercial design.
I think the previous idents were very creative and ambitious, and I do admire Channel 4 taking a risk with them. It's a stark contrast to BBC Two, who have submitted to reverting to a 25 year old package. Maybe a concept so avant garde would have had more impact in the earlier years of Channel 4, but the problem with them in today's TV climate is that with something like 50 channels available on even the most basic set up of Freeview, attention is thin in the ground. And you needed to pay an awful lot of attention to appreciate what was actually going on in those. As you say, I think it appealed to a 'type' of person. I think that type were more your average Channel 4 viewer back in the 80's. But the content of the channel is now very populist and mainstream, I suspect that an elder person tuning in with a cup of tea and a biscuit for a bit of Countdown or GBBO would not have understood them even if you'd sat and explained them in great depth. To the average viewer, they are just confusing short films which may not even register as being an ident of any kind.
I think a lot of good emerged from the overall package. The deconstructed blocks which flow through trailers, break bumpers etc were really strong. In fact, I think they may have now made a mistake in restoring the formed logo in them. But with the new idents in town, I think there's a clash. My mind is torn on whether I like them or not. I suspect we've already seen the limit of their potential and I suspect that due to their underlying box ticking agenda, Channel 4 will stick with them far longer than they are welcome.
As the channel's content goes more and more mainstream, so the idents have gotten more and more abstract. It's as though they are overcompensating to retain the station's image without producing any of the alternative market programming it was set up to provide in the first place. These idents are okay, I somewhat liked them when I first saw them, but how many times do you reckon you can watch those same four short films before you get sick of them? And yes, won't one of these just set the tone for a hard hitting documentary on corruption, abuse, murder etc? Many years ago, during the height of the troubles in Ireland, Ulster TV realised the importance of an ident being flexible enough to be used to introduce all manner of content, from Coronation Street to an urgent newsflash. Just a static card with the logo, no music, nothing. And whilst Channel 4 can perhaps be allowed to enjoy more freedom than that, you do still have to consider how inappropriate it might be to see these jolly idents linking into programming on a bad news day, such as the recent wave of terrorist attacks we've seen in the country.
I think the danger with these idents is that they paint Channel 4 into a corner. As a public service broadcaster, they really need to base their overall theme upon a generic ident which simply communicates the brand. Then build upon that in all manner of playful ways, but allow the tone to naturally be taken down to a more neutral state when need be. I'm thinking of the stripes look of the early 2000's when I say that. Not my favourite set, I must admit, but I thought they were very much fit for purpose.
I recall when BBC One had the dancer idents, news broke of the death of the Queen Mother and they could only resort to a hastily cobbled together still image of the least happy ident in the set. They didn't have a news clock to resort to, a plain ident, nothing. Whereas in the late 90's, when news broke of the fatal car crash which killed the Princess Of Wales, they didn't hesitate to bring up the globe. The same globe which led into Noel's House Party, The Generation game etc. If serious news broke today, Channel 4 don't really have anything in the standard set which would be appropriate. It would be the BBC's Queen Mother scenario all over again.

These idents are like a parody of middle class people's erroneous ideas about themselves. The one with the wheelchair racers and 4 score becoming exhausted and leaning on the streetlight is condescending in the manner of Chris Morris on Brass Eye losing the armwrestling contest to the gay man - but it's the one with the immigrants that is truly astonishing. The moral condescension and the self delusion of that thing is breathtaking. One with a stethoscope to contribute to your healthcare system - one with a theodolite to build your houses - and Channel 4 - which is a tv broadcaster - saving them all from a watery grave. It's not just what channel 4 thinks it is that is revealed by this advert - a kind of institutional dysmorphia that implies the whole organisation needs collective long term therapy - it's what it aspires to be - not a tv channel, but rather some sort of Scarlet Pimpernel organisation operating an underground railroad for the disenfranchised and vulnerable. Getting moral lectures from that class which is wiping life from the face of the earth at a rate unprecedented in human history is nothing new - but they're seldom so nauseatingly delivered.

Secondly, is that “first safe country” thing a law? If so, could you source it? It seems to me that’d pose a big problem in a refugee crisis because one country would be stuck with more refugees than they probably can handle.
Speaking as a Yank, sonic branding and visual branding are a big deal in the states, especially the famous NBC chimes and peacock. I understand the direction Channel 4 wanted to go two years ago - not showing what channel the viewer is watching, but why they’re watching it - but as bold as it is, the idents left me puzzled. In addition, knowing their history, I feel only C4 could’ve gotten away with this for so long - any broadcaster here would’ve been gutted like a fish had they took a similar direction.
I’m glad C4 have gradually resurrected their visual branding by those small glimpses of the logo for bumpers and trailer end pieces, but I’m also glad they’re evolving their idents sonically by the return of Fourscore, and bringing about a metal giant who only “speaks” that mnemonic in foghorn mode. Even though the signature was not there for more time than it was for the channel’s 35-year-history, keeping it on there will make for excellent brand reinforcement.
Oh, and to those complaining about that 4th ident, you can kick rocks. Diversity always played a part in C4’s history too. And besides, the giant’s Fourscore foghorn confusing the other ships - or is it leading a symphony of horns - makes for a funny ending.

Surely even if you pro immigration you'd concede that immigration should be done via the appropriate processes allowing for adequate back ground checks to take place and to ensure skill needs are met.
