If you have been watching my channel for a while, you know I am very passionate about fishing the Ned Rig. Part of the reason is because I grew up in the heart of Ned Rig country and I was taught a lot of what I know from Ned Kehde himself (inventor of the Ned Rig). Many people struggle to perfect this ultra-finesse rig because it is very light in weight and unconventional compared to most bass fishing lures. I thought that this video could help all of the confused anglers out there understand how to properly retrieve the Ned Rig.
There are 6 main retrieves for the Ned Rig which I speak to in this video. Make sure to watch each type because practicing all types of retrieves is how you will become an expert. Trust me, I have been using this bait for years and still learn new tricks.

Awesome vid buddy! I had to save this for a day when I could completely pay attention to it without interruptions. I'm really excited to try this rig out this spring. I'm thinking it's going to work really well for me at some of my smallie river spots.

In the Upper Potomac, I mostly fish Ned behind large boulders and tree-falls. I cast both toward the dead slack behind the obstacle, and right at the edge of the slack where it meets the current. In just the last couple of kayak floats, all five methods have worked for me on Smallies (and even a couple of Walleye) in that kind of water. What I am doing now is is a bit of a combo of methods that give me a swim, glide, shake, drag, dead-stick and straight swim all in one or two casts to each spot. It has been VERY effective! Thanks, again, man! You've completely transformed my catch rate.

This was a very good, informative video on my favorite bass fishing technique. Thank you for covering the various retrieves with us; sometimes I do need to be reminded there's more than one way to fish this technique. But what I thought was the most important part was "make it your own". 90% of the time I deadstick the Ned Rig with very small hops added in. But I have also caught Bass while reeling the bait back in (which has always caught me off guard). I also liked the fact that you have shown numerous baits so we all know that the Ned Rig is NOT only just a TRD; I personally have 5 different baits for the Ned Rig. But again; a very good video; this was a topic well worthy of a "10-minute" fish talk.

Drag and shake #5 baby!! Yep that’s my main retrieve too, even though I’ve caught on all. My problem now is it’s hard to go back to a small TRD when the crawZ is working so well and looks so darn good!Great video Ethan!
Heck yeah Mike! Gotta use what you are confident in. For me, I really like the weight of the original Finesse TRD so it is my go-to. I think a 1/10 with the CrawZ will be another staple. Still need to pick up some BulletZ...

Ethan, you already know I'm a Ned rig fan and have given it a lot of time and attention, including the various retrieves. Thoughts: the Ned Rig is not a lure per se, but a way to use a small jig head and a finesse-sized lure body to catch fish at unmatched rates when compared to "conventional" power fishing lures. One of the early "disses" of the rig was that it caught too many small 'dink' fish and was thus a waste of time for serious bass anglers. The earliest type of Ned Rig was a 1/16 or 1/8 oz or even 1/32oz mushroom jig head paired with a 2.5" Z-Man ZinkerZ (a regular 5" ZinkerZ cut in half) and super glued onto the head. Finesse "purists" were supposed to use really light 4-6 lb line and light gear....that didn't work out well for me-too many times my junk was taken to the house...so I went rogue and use 8 lb minimum and often MH gear. My first encounter with the mysterious Ned Rig "Varmint" (as it was called by Table Rock lake anglers) was jaw-dropping success and literally changed angling, for me, forever, so this technique is very personal. In the past several years, Z-Man has researched, developed and marketed a plethora of outstanding Finesse lures and improved jig heads, making the Ned Rig technique even more efficient, exciting and enjoyable. Having tried all the various retrieval methods, let's just say that pretty much anything you do will work so it isn't complicated. The straight swim is obviously the best for Slim SwimZ, MinnowZ and DieZel MinnowZ and occasional twitching often elicits strikes. On all the other finesse plastics, simply casting, letting the lure drop to the bottom (if it makes it that far) and then using a slow lift-glide-drop, with or without shaking, and combining dead stick from time to time will put a smile on your face. Oh, about Ned Rigs only catching dinks? False. Don't leave home without it. Don
Darn right! Completely agree with all of your thoughts on this and we are both some of the few anglers with the experience of fishing it in its early stages. I feel that the Ned Rig game changed a ton when Z-Man finally embraced the rig with their Finesse TRD launch. To your point, they have obviously not stopped the innovation ever since. I’m personally a finesse purist that stepped it up just enough to horse fish a little. I never go lower than 6# fluorocarbon but I pretty much always use a 1/15oz head. The anglers that use a heavy jig tend to be missing opportunity in my opinion. Anyways, I could talk Ned Rig for hours but I’ll leave it at that :) thanks for your thoughts Don!
Good video. The "Ned" rig has been around since soft plastics were invented, long, long before Ned made it famous. I'm not sure it's possible to use a jig head and any soft plastic without automatically using what we call the Ned rig. It's just putting a relatively small plastic of nearly any kind on a jig head, and reeling it in. I don't think there are many other ways of using jig heads and plastic lures.
For me, what makes the Ned rig so useful is that it works very well with huge jig heads, or with tiny ones. As long as you match the size of the plastic to the size of the jog head, you'll catch fish.
That said, I've also caught a lot of fish using a small jig head with a very long worm oor a huge swimbait. The Ned rig seems to operate on the principle that most fish want small meals most of the time. This is usually true, but sometimes fish are really hungry, and they want the largest meal they can find. I've had largemouth gram a swimbait almost as big as they were, so big the bass could barely fit it down its gullet.
I've also found that even when the Ned rig is working perfectly, even when big bass are attacking it, GIANT bass are looking for something bigger, something that would make a full meal all on its own. I've caught four bass between eleven and thirteen pounds. Not records, but respectable by any standard. I caught all four on days when the Ned rig was working great, but everything I caught was just average.
I caught three of them when I switched to very large swimbaits, two that mimicked bluegill, one that mimicked, I don't know, but it was BIG. I caught the fourth under the same conditions, but with a twelve inch work that I just let fall where I though I saw the faint outline of a huge bass a bit more than half an hour earlier. I spent that half an hour running a Ned rig through the area, using two or three or four retrieves techniques. I really don't remember. I also switched plastics at least three times.
Then I said to heck with it and put a thick, twelve inch work on the same small jig head already tied to the line. The largemouth hit it on the second cast.
All I'm saying is that the typical Ned rig is great, and you can catch a LOT of fish with it, but sometimes it pays to throw something big enough to intimidate the average largemouth, and make the really big bass, say seven pound on up, see a whole meal with one gulp. I've watched a lot of angloers catch bass after bass after bass with the Ned Rig, but none above that seven pound mark, yet the don't want to switch to something a little different because it's working so well.
Just for a change of pace, huge a huge swimbait on, or a huge worm. Hook the swimbait behind the head or at the back of the neck, and retrieve it like a wounded and dying fish. An easy meal. Or hook the biggest worm you have to a medium size jig head, and crawl it along the bottom.
If I could choose only one technique for largemouth, it would be the Ned rig, but don't get so caught up in using it in a typical; way that tyou forget everything else you can do with a jig head and a piece of soft plastic.
I agree 1000% with this comment. Thank you for putting so much thought into it - very interesting story about the 12" worm! Ultimately, a Ned Rig is a numbers technique and it can catch big fish, but it certainly does not have the big fish drawing power as a big swimbait, big plastic, or big jig. The great thing about the ned rig is there's really no wrong way to fish it, you only have to figure out how the the fish want it right now if they're being picky.
What has worked for me this winter are a continuous slow drag, and a drag and deadstick. When I drag and deadstick I'm using the rod, giving it 2-4 subtle twitches, and moving it no more than a foot at a time. Almost all of my bites come on the deadstick when I'm doing it.
Yeah I usually do a mix of retrieves but if the bite is slow, I make a point of deadsticking the bait more often until it pays off. And it always does 😁😁
You forgot your famous Ned Spin that you introduced this summer (looks like a beetle spin). Then there is my favorite is the Ned Tail Spin, where you screw into the tail a small spinner. Maybe that would be a different video various rigging options for the Ned Rig.

Just started using a Ned Rig today. I missed a ton of fish (I think). I did catch a few, but I'm not sure what a strike on a Ned Rig is supposed to feel like. I have always been a spinner bait or top water guy - the hits are "no doubters." Can you offer any advice on recognizing strikes with the Ned Rig? Or is it just a bunch of practice and figuring it out on your own?
Jeff this is a great question! One part of a Ned Rig that really throws a lot of bass fishermen off is how light it is (and therefore you don't feel the bait much). My advice is... Watch your line and feel for light pressure. If the line starts to move or if it stops sinking before it should, do a little twitch up to feel for a fish and if there is one there just keep going with your rod at an upward angle. Don't have to set the hook hard.
The bites can be very subtle because they basically just suck it in and keep swimming. I guarantee you will get a feel for it after fishing it a few more times. Stay confident - you will master it soon :)

#3 seems ridiculous but two of my bass that were over 5lbs this past year were a straight up cast and dead stick floating plastics. Makes me feel like I am trying to hard sometimes. I like to use a little bit of attractant for this method but tend to get an accidental catfish here and there when I do. You did a great job of putting theses methods into words. All I can say is I go slow.

Online Outdoorsman I’d like to break into the 6lb category this year but as a Nebraska angler that isn’t the easiest to do. I know there is a 6.8 in one of my favorite lakes so hopefully she’ll be up to 7 this year and interested in what I’m offering.

I'm curious about the weights to use. I normally use 1/4oz but being that the Ned rig is so "finesse-y" and you want to keep the TRD or whatever floating in an upright position is there a good rule of thumb to use for determining the best weight to use?
Absolutely - great question and thanks for watching! A Ned Rig truly performs at its best with a 1/15 or 1/16oz head. It is a bit lighter than most anglers are comfortable with but I promise you that it will perform much better than the heavy weights. Ahhh yes I would definitely use a bigger jig if that’s the case! I’m a big freshwater guy so I don’t necessarily know how to apply it in the salt but I’m sure you’ll crush them on it!

Sounds good. Thing is, I have never caught anything on ned rigs before, and I have tried them. Guess I just need to keep trying it, and throw it in the right conditions. I kind of feel like I'd have more confidence fishing the TRD as a topwater bait, with a EWG hook. I tested it out at a local high fishing pressure lake by me with no results, but It casts great on the BFS gear. I tried the TRD tubez the same way, with good results, just need to find the right hook for that application. The body on that tube is so short, because half of the tube is the skirt. I got a pack of 3/0 Gamakatsu octopus hooks, and they seem to fit the tubez, t-trigged and weightless. When I tried fishing them in October, I had 3/0 circle hooks rigged, and the fish were able to throw the hook very easily, probably because of how the hook tip was curved inward. Hopefully the octopus hook will have better hook penetration. Traditionally I have loved throwing weightless t-rigged tubes on top of pads. It's awesome with the floating zman plastics.
Yeah, the TRD TubeZ is a bit different. It really works best on their Ned Heads rather than T-rigged. And yeah man, just keep trying it. I would try fishing a river and deadstick it in deeper pools to gain some confidence. You will catch fish, and once you do, you won't be able to put it down! :) best of luck buddy!

I fish over at Seven Lakes in Holly, MI quite a bit. And usually fish the shore edge and deeper later on in the day.
What rod is that on your small example videos ???
I use predominately a discontinued Gloomis GL2 drop shot rod. It’s what they call a “Mag Light” but I would generally recommend a 6’9 to 7’ ML rod for Ned Rigs!
how do you know when your lure is 6 inches from the bottom, or at any elevation?
Getting a feel for the lure rate of fall and knowing what depth you’re sitting in.

Do you fish this with a low or high gear ratio?
Any traditional spinning reel will work. I like higher speed for pretty much anything but it isn't a huge deal for the Ned rig!

Yeah I would recommend a bright head with a darker plastic (or a plastic with some bright flash). Fish it extra slow and have patience because you have to remember those fish aren't going to feel it as much as a bait with more vibration. In fact, it may not hurt to use a bait with a little kick for that reason (such as a paddle tail swimbait or grub). I also like a lighter head so it takes longer to get to the bottom and gives the fish a longer chance to find it on the fall.

You said "you always shake it" , in my experience this isnt true. Alot of the time if the fish are being extra finicky , shaking the bait will turn fish away , it can look unnatural, especially since alot of people dont understand how much movement is imparted with the smallest rod movement. Even on a glass day theres current in the water and that adds a natural movement which looks alot more like a suspended piece of food than if your bait looks like its having a seizure , so alot of the time taking the shake out of those retrieves is the better option. I never really thought about swimming a ned rig , so thats a new one to me , im gonna give it a shot.
Fair point! Thanks for the comment. I probably shouldn’t have said that because there are times, to your point, where shaking is certainly not necessary. I was speaking more to my style and how I fish this rig most often. Tight lines 🤠

Here in Wichita, I fish mostly deep sand pits. Very few if any natural lakes around here and fishing here is tough. You have a cool channel. 👍🏻 I subscribed.

Haha well I just saw this and hope you had luck. I’d say throwing ultra finesse baits and deadsticking them will be your best bet but otherwise, I’d get slip bobbers and use a jig and waxworm and try for some panfish!
