If you are hooking the ball or hitting a lot of ground balls you are most likely rolling your wrist at contact. Try to have your bat perpendicular at contact so wrist roll will occur after contact. I’m referring to perpendicular to the field you are driving the ball. The shoulders guide the ball to left center, center, and right center and not the arms or hands. Additionally the front elbow leads the bat plane. Try to keep your front elbow bent and up during your swing (almost to the point the elbow is locked in the bent position). As a result your bat will be on pitch plane sooner and remain on pitch plane. Unfortunately for me I did not realize this until years after I stopped playing and began coaching my son. I recommend finding a slow motion video of any of the top mlb hitters today and see how they apply these principles as long as the pitch is inside or down the middle. A lot of players lose form when caught off balance on outside corner and stretch their arms to make contact.
What drills would you recommend for a player that is early or on their front leg too early? My 11 yr old is early hitting the ball 18 inch in front of the plate
The league has changed since ted Williams played. Watch Josh Donaldson in his interview on mlb tv. Ground balls and line drives are called outs in the big leagues . #justsaynotogroundballs

thank you Mr. Antonelli! This video was very helpful and has helped me hit in the gaps more too
great vid and do you have any tips for better separation and a better lower half?
Thanks!! Check out our hitting videos in our playlist. We go in depth with separation and using the lower half. Good luck!!!
3:23. Flatten the bat path. Do you have drills for this, 7 to 9 year olds? If so, please link.

When are you going to put together some swing lesson videos?
What do you mean?
Antonelli Baseball aka Matt Lisle
I get a lot of top spin line drives and the occasional slice. Do you think that's a timing issue or bat path issue?
My guess is usually bat path first. Timing sometimes, but probably mostly path
Could you explain the subtle differences in swinging at a woman's fast pitch and a traditional fast ball
I do have some videos on it. Check out our hitting videos you will find it! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Ted Williams says ground balls and line drives are a good thing. Especially if you have speed !
Are you sure? Thanks for watching and commenting!
Absolutely ! He's quoted in his book The Science of Hitting regarding ground balls. You emphasis on bat path is absolutely right on !!!!
Antonelli Baseball. BTW....I never would wish for my son to hit a ground ball on his next at bat lol !

what about stop hitting pop flys. my problem
I can do a video for you! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Try your hands parrallel to your rear shoulder 6 to 8 inches away from your body.
technically not swinging at all would be the most effective way to stop hitting ground balls.
Haha very true! Thanks again for commenting and watching!
Why didn't you use these tips in the big league?!
I learned more about hitting as I got older. Actually didn't know much at all about hitting while I was playing. Thanks for commenting and watching!
