Recognized by your fans?!?! How freaking cool is that? Your mom ate alone at the same bier garden on her birthday 17 years ago. I definitely enjoyed a liter of beer and some unknown sausage and listened to the German life around me!!! Thanks for the trip down my own memory lane. Love mom.
And homeless people are getting more help here in Germany since there are many places where they can get food for free. No one has to eat from the trash.
Now, I do not know all German churches by heart, but you can try to go inside and look at these architectural wonders from the inside. Even if you're not a religious person, as a lover of architecture, I implore you to try and open these church doors.
Haha ya, he couldn't know that cause in the US if u see someone rummaging threw the trash it's because of food, well at least that's my expression. When that system started here i was really pissed but now i see it as an UP in germany that we have that bottle/can return system, if u don't need it yourself someone else in need can get them :)
There is a guy in Germany going for all the concerts and picking up all the empty bottles. He bought a new caravan from it to get more. He's making real money from it. I also have a guy that i see every morning at 5:50 am and he is doing his 20 km walk. He looks poor, but i doubt he is. He get's every Red Bull i drink in the morning😂. Greetings

I only wish your videos were longer. For me, as an American citizen who has been living in Germany for decades, it is so much fun to witness your impressions. And Germans are learning from your American perspective. My US-relatives use to say “we do things right”, when I tell them about different habits in Germany. How I hate that! Nobody does everything right! Do I think Germany does things better? Hell, yes. Guns, school system, health insurance, political parties, election system, etc. Do I think, Germany does everything better? Hell, no! Of course there are also things so much better in the US. Kindness, Service, humor, drama series, music. And of course the French do some things better. And the Italian and the Dutch people. We should visit each other. Learn from each other without prejudice, put things into perspective. Oh and BTW, I wasn’t impress by your 25 Euro-Biergarten-meal. There must be better offers in Munich.
You're totally right of course :) BUT we Germans do have humour - it's just different ^^ I for one don't like "the" American humour. Apart from typical German humour (which is often based on our language and therefor not noticable for non-natives) I also like British humour.
Maybe that guy that searched in the trash was searching for plastic bottles with "Pfand" so he can return them and get some money. Thats at least kinda common in Germany and more likely the case then searching for food in the trash
@@GeneralGoodGames yes that's true so it was nice that he gave him Pizza. But he probably still didn't searched for food in the trash but for bottles that's what I wanted to say.
I randomly discovered you here on TH-cam yesterday and am now bingeing your videos with a smile on my face and little tears in my eyes. I was born and raised in Berlin and I love seeing my city and my country through your eyes and then being more able to appreciate what we have here. I'm touched by your reactions and I think you're so cool and cute (and just very pretty to look at btw). Thanks for your videos ❤
3:10 people searching the trash here are almost never looking for food. We have the Tafel for that (an organisation that gives people free and/or cheap food). They usually look for "Pfandpflaschen" which are bottles that they can exchange for money in the supermarket.
And food is also pretty cheap in Germany, if they find like 8 Pfandflaschen in the trash that's around 2€ so they can buy something to eat easily. I have been to some of the poorest areas in Germany (Munich is on the rich side) and have never seen people eat stuff out of trash cans.
As an Aussie I lived in Munich for two years in the late 1980’s… I was about your age. Was working for a large Germany company (Siemens). It was an amazing experience, first time overseas and in a foreign country. Have since returned to Munich a few times, feel very much at home there - it’s a beautiful city and good beer. My favourite is Paulana Hefe-Weissbier, luckily it’s available in my home city Melbourne.
If you are in front of the church - just go in, they are open for everyone (normaly). And if it is a catholic one, then the inside is normaly very impressive.
Just a thought. Do you also enter those churches and cathedrals you admire on the outside? As far as I know it's allowed to go inside if the doors are open. The interiors are usually quite stunning. You just need to be quiet, but that is obvious of course.
@@friddevonfrankenstein I know he means the Space Needle. But the Seattle Space Needle is just a tower build for nothing else than as a showpiece. It has no real use. That's the difference, sherlock.

I first visited Germany (from Australia) in 1973 - Munich and Bayreuth - and have been back many times. I learnt German at school in the early 1960's in the UK but have forgotten much of it, alas, although I never have a problem in getting around. I have always enjoyed my visits to Germany, friendly people, love the food (and bier) and glorious scenery. Tschüß!
Joel, the fact that you don't want praise for your act of kindness actually proves you are worthy of praise. Yes, the poor homeless guy also deserves praise for his kindness toward you. But he would have had no chance to be kind without first your kind act toward him. It was a "chance" meeting of kindred souls--if you really believe it was chance. I prefer to think it was Providential. Thanks for the mini-tour of Munich. It's probably the only tour I'll ever afford. Take care & God bless.
At 7:44 you mentioned the starring... I do understand that now (as a german)... As I was in Chicago once for some weeks as a university guest... I stood in front of the university waiting for a friend... There were a lot of people walking by and like I am used to culturally, I looked at the people (not even moving the head when they walked by)... I did not even set up a special face or something I was just looking with my default face expression... All of the sudden one of them yelled angry at me what my "fucking problem" is and he did argue to me for about 3 minutes about it... and I did not understand why and all the time said sorry I don't know what I have done... But that explains it a bit thank you :D I thought that guy was drunk but I guess he was not :D
I had a similar experience while standing in a queue in Bangkok. I looked at a guy in a parallel line because he was wearing the same hat (Tilley - you don't see them there). He flew into a raging rant so violent it was frightening. Yes, he was American.
You weren’t looking for praise but I’m going to give you it anyway. That was a lovely thing to have done, giving away your pizza to the homeless guy. It shows what we all know: that you have a kind heart. It’s cool that you’ve bumped into some of your subscribers. Don’t feel you need to justify when you’re having a beer mate. You’re on holiday and deserve to have fun and relax with a beer. Ignore anyone who makes judgement on drinking. I’m still paranoid you took my jokey comment last week seriously but pretty sure you didn’t as you know me by now. Munich looks very pretty.
Afternoon Joel, you really are a kind hearted soul, looking out for people less fortunate than you. Thank you for showing us parts of Munich, I've been through the airport about 20 times on the way to Austria for my skiing, and never been to the City. That's why I'm planning a City tour next year. Thanks to your followers in Germany for their comments, I'm going to steal some of their ideas for my visit. Have a good night, and a nice rest day tomorrow. Best Wishes, T
I see mostly retired seniors from the U.S. visiting Europe. So maybe that's why people turned and looked ... Also, I find it polite to look friendly into someones eyes with a short greet when passing each other in a close distance. Most people look ahead and ignore you though.
Anyone who has watched your videos for a while gets to know who you are and they know you are a good person. The pizza story illustrated just what you said - humanity. Look forward to you every day. Keep enjoying everything.
big mind, big heart, big love right there. welcome to germany where u meet truely chilled people and love from most of the people. enjoy. the world is open for minds like urs. ye munich is pretty expensive and these are hotspots. you can find better food for cheaper money if you go deeper into germany. but still enjoy :) greeetz!
The Augustiner Keller Biergarten is quite big, but I think the Hirschgarten (lit. deer/stag garden) is bigger. But Munich is full of beergardens all over the city, and I almost all of them are worth visiting. Most significantly the big old chestnut trees are a sign that the place is a good place for having a good time.
@@manuelrentz4728 I am sorry, if I have offended you with my joke. Its a saying from the "good old days " of munich local radio stations. It was either Fleischi Fleischmann or Langemann & the morning crew, who "decorated" every record trivia with that statement, "world wide, in Bavaria, at this time of day" In general as we are commenting on the youtube-channel of this nice young american guy, I think we should comment in english as he conceded in this video that his german language skills are very limited.
@@archiegates650 OK, I didn't know that statement, I learned something again. I didn't take it as an insult, so don't worry about it. I think it's always hard abroad, but you just get by, don't you? If you are interested (and they are open) you should take a look into a cathedral. They're usually open for the public and the decoration, acoustics and atmosphere inside (at least to me) is very special, it's also crazy that they sometimes look even bigger on the inside than from outside. Iam not religious at all but if Iam on vacation in a town with an old catholic cathedral I always try to have a look around. Also helps if you're interested in history and art

Hi Joel, 40 min train ride from Munich, Augsburg. From Thursday to Saturday, Augsburg Summer nights from 5- midnight, dancing, live music, food in the main square. The biggest town party in Bavaria. Love to watch your videos as I'm am ex-pat, british, and find your reactions soooo interesting. Keep up the good work
Joel, I wish I had known you were coming to Munich. You are so welcome!!! You are a great guy and a real philanthropist. Since I watch your videos, I really appreciate my own country more than before. I like how fair and distinguished you see things and build your opinion. I would have loved to show you around and also invite you to a really nice restaurant because Pizza Hut and Currywurst is not what you deserve 😊. Please tell me when you come the next time or are you still here?! If yes , please drive to Landshut to visit the „Landshuter Hochzeit“. It‘s only every four years and the greatest medieval festival in the world. It is going to be UNESCO world heritage soon. It‘s right now every weekend in July. Just contact me and I organize your stay there because I am From Landshut (license plate LA) so I use to say I‘m from LA😂.
Hi Joel, I saw that you have been to to Odeonsplatz and Hofgarten. If you would have walked down the street to the university and to the Siegestor (Victory Gate) turned right then you would have headed directly to the English garden. This is a must see with the Mausuleum temple, the spot for wave surfers, the Chinese tower and its beer garden. Some good restaurants , bars and pubs are in that area as well next to station Gisela Strasse or Münchner Freiheit.
It’s always good to get a positive feedback, served with a smile and you might have felt how it has an impact on your own horizon and feeling that an echo can have a deeper meaning… even on the future.
Colone would not be on my top 10 list to visit. Having the "Kölner Dom" is not enough. If you are not gay, colone is boring... He chose by far the best cities to visit: Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.
@@Peter_Cetera Guess, you never visited Cologne with a local. There is so much more about Cologne than the Kölner Dom, especially when you are as young as he is. Such a chilled vibe everywhere.
You are doing exactly what I was doing when I was your age, having city holidays and walking miles it's good to see. I was in Munich a few years back and had a similar experience, we had lunch and couldn't eat half of it, the waiter asked if we wanted the remainder bagged up I said no thanks but it came back bagged up anyway, crossing the street there was someone begging and I offered him my schnitzel which he gratefully accepted. The reason some people in the world have so little is that we in the west have so much and won't give it up.
Hi Joel thanks for the like. It’s funny to think that on your journey to Scotland you will pass within a couple of miles of my house. I’ve been to Mallaig by road you can do it by train too. Stayed at a hotel there, got up late and didn’t want to miss the breakfast so missed the ferry to Skye and had to drive the hundred miles to the bridge. No space on the ferry coming back so had to drive again.I wish I was coming with you!
I like your videos not only because of the videos but also because of your opinion😀 I am very happy that you are having such a good time here in Germany.
You’re travelling relatively close to the Czech boarders. Come and visit Prague, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I believe it is easy to get there by a long distance bus or train.
I enjoy watching your vlogs. Very uplifting to see you laughing or getting excited. Well, about the Biergarten: The characteristic of a Biergarten in Bavaria is that in most of them you can bring your own food ("Brotzeit", sandwiches and such). Most of them are operated/owned by breweries and the tradition goes back to the 1800s when they were not allowed to sell food, but of course drinking alcohol without eating something doesn't bode well. In other parts of Germany a Biergarten refers to an outdoor garden-like location that often looks and operates similarly, but they won't permit you to bring your own food.
I’m going to Munich Germany for the first time ever, I’ve never left the USA before, and I’m so excited but nervous at the same time. Your videos are very helpful for me. Thank you.
I wish you a great time here. You don't need to be nervous. Nearly all germans understand at least basically english since it's a major subject from third grade on. I hope you enjoy your trip.

@@budapestkeletistationvoices it was beyond anything I could have imagined. Germany is such a beautiful country. Figuring out the train system was a bit tricky at first but then became second nature. I miss being there. Thank you so much for asking. ☺️
In the days of old the breweries needed an underground ice-cellar where blocks of ice that had been cut from lakes and rivers in winter were stored. Those ice-cellars had thick walls and doors to keep the cold in but to protect them from the heat in summer trees with large leaves where planted over and around them. Chestnuts are ideal for that. Well, and then the idea was born to serve their guests drink and basic food in the shades of that trees. And so the beergarden was born.

Sorry for my bad english. People in Germany not looking for food in the trash, looking for Pfand bottles. For German homeless people are like a job but also not homeless people do that here 😉 if you wanna help them, so leave pfand bottle behind the trash or give it to a person how lives on the street. So thats how i do it, if i make party with friends in germany. Pfand System brings money and also good for the world✌it gives so much more nice cities in Germany, but i understand thats the most pupulars. Enjoy your trip and greats from Germany😊
I have another suggestion: visit the „Deutsche Museum“ (german museum). It is the biggest museum I have ever visited and it hosts solo many different things. Have fun in Germany :) I really enjoy living here 😊
Oh, that’s great. You went to the BMW- Museum. My brother is working there. It felt super to be very close to him. Thank you. Also for helping someone in distress. Those moments are so precious.By the way: The food you ordered might have been fresh but I think it was too expensive. Now you can calm down if someone still thinks that Germany is a socialist country or even communist country. This is a Democracy that allows capitalism and is social at the same time. Pardon my French but lately I feel like hopping on a plane and hope some people wouldn’t have to fallow my attempts and my wishes to finally be able to say:”Thank you”. Even if it is an event to wave across the pond to give something back.
As other people have stated already the guy was probably just digging through the trash because he was looking for those glass/plastic bottles for the deposit money but even then I think the person knew that you only had good intention with offering your pizza to them and that's all that counts. :)
We are all with you Joel. 😊 Great video as usual. My prayers have been answered for you. I prayed some people would recognise you and talk to you, so you were not too lonely. Keep being the lovely person you are and others will be drawn to you. Take care x
TV towers, the first one was opened in Februrary 1956 in Stuttgart. Before that one, there were only steel constructions but not real towers where the public could get on top for the view. So, we have quite a few of those. They have the purpose of broadcasting tv and radio signals.

If you're still in Munich on Saturday, then I'd be down to tag along and just help with language barriers as you decide where you wanna go. Hope you're enjoying Munich!
The Biergarten "Hirschgarten" is much bigger than the Augustiner Keller. You can buy something to eat at a supermarket and eat it in the Biergarten. Only the beer you have to buy there!
Those needles you referred to are broadcasting towers from a time when broadcasting was the only way for a radio or TV station. Especially useful for reaching hill or mountain areas.
I’d love for you to get here, get a car, a friend or two, and go on a read trip through Europe. Germany to Austria, Swiss alps, France or even further south. Take a month or two an just explore and enjoy. Might be hard to archive, but you’d love it and we’d love watching. However, great trip. As a german currently touring Europe, I always love to see some oversees opinions and reactions. Kinda makes me appreciate Europe a lot more. Good thing these days, while I tend to depreciate things around here more and more. So thank you.
The Augustiner is one of the bigger Beergardens in Munich, and since being conveniently located in the vicinity of the central railway station, it's getting kind of touristy during weekends. The biggest Beergarden in the world is the Hirschgarten, just a couple of miles down the street Arnulfstraße. That one is definitely worth a visit - I used to hang out there regularly while living in Munich. Foodwise, I recommend a "Hendl" (half of a chicken) and "Kartoffelsalat" (Bavarian style potato salad). My favorite beer at Hirschgarten is "Tegernseer Spezial". Go for it, enjoy!!
P.s.: Try some Weissbier (wheat beer) for a change. It comes in cone shaped half liter glasses, and has a distinctive taste. That's one of the joys of my annual one month in Bavaria: To taste all the various kinds of beers, mostly from monastery breweries. Tegenseer, Kloster Reutberg, Andechser. I am avoiding the big city breweries. I am in heaven. The 'needles' are not show-offs, they are TV towers and were a necessity in the time before satellites.
Great that you did give something to the homeless person... big shame that there even are homeless people here. btw when people are using their eyes into your direction for "2 or 3 seconds" they are not "staring" at you, they are looking and it actually started to bother me the last years that people started to look more and more down on their phones instead of looking in each other eyes, like many times when i see a pretty girl and its an option to approach her, make a compliment or get to know her but so many are glued to their phones screen or looking down on the floor, so i really dont want to have a society where people look even less imat each other like it seems to be in the usa, i think people here are not paying attention enough to each other, often like it said, just because glued to their phone or so, its better to look at each other, creates better social environment (unless its an agressive look) and if you go to a village you will notice that its the same, but with greeting. So people also will look at you but will greet you. In a city its the same just that there are so many people that you cant greet them all, but sometimes people greet or nod (more men) so its all social interaction wheater its looking or greeting.
I really enjoy your emotions. One can really tell that you feel it. Everything of it. Glad to see you enjoy your trip to Germany. Keep up your good work. Like your vlogs a lot !

I love Munich. It has an amazing range of museums, quite a few are free or cheap one day a week. Admittedly I was last there in 2008 so things may have changed. Take in the Toy Museum, the Neue Pinakothek, the old city gates, roman bathhouse.
DRESDEN is a must visit. It was firebombed in WW2. Then subject to communist foibles; they did nothing for Dresden, their way of getting back at the Germans. After re-unification, Dresden has been slowly revitalised. The VW factory (built early 2000s) looks fabulous.

Yes :)
Yes and what are they doing with the Pfand-Money? Most of them are going to buy food out of it.
@@GeneralGoodGames Or alcohol...

The "needles" are most of the time build for (television) broadcast, with sometimes additional restaurants and lookout platforms.
You're way more confident than you were last summer, this is what travelling can do for you :)
*It's not a "needle" - It's a TV/Radio tower!*
Most of them got build in the 50s and 60s to transmit Analog TV over Terrestrial (antennas like radio).
No shit, Sherlock...;)
The word "needle" has multiple meanings (eg Seattle Space Needle)
@@friddevonfrankenstein I know he means the Space Needle. But the Seattle Space Needle is just a tower build for nothing else than as a showpiece. It has no real use. That's the difference, sherlock.
Just enjoy 😊 Don’t listen to the complainers, I was your age as well a long time ago and you’re doing everything right for your age. 👍👍👍
That big cathedral was built in 1494..
well, finished.. it "only" took them 20 years, which was incredibly fast back then..
its insane, isnt it!
Sadly severely damaged in WW2 and rebuilt. It’s very plain inside
in contrast to the cologne cathedral, which took 600 years to build 😅

Some of my best memories of kindness while travelling involved Germans. I have enormous respect and admiration for your country.
I first visited Germany (from Australia) in 1973 - Munich and Bayreuth - and have been back many times. I learnt German at school in the early 1960's in the UK but have forgotten much of it, alas, although I never have a problem in getting around. You must treat yourself to a "Weißwurst Früchstück". It's simply part of Munich.
I guess that was his fault in the afternoon, when his order was replaced by a currywurst.

But that explains it a bit thank you :D
I thought that guy was drunk but I guess he was not :D
I had a similar experience while standing in a queue in Bangkok. I looked at a guy in a parallel line because he was wearing the same hat (Tilley - you don't see them there). He flew into a raging rant so violent it was frightening. Yes, he was American.
Oh no I'm so sorry ❤ that sounds scary.

You should defo go inside one of those big churches. The acoustics are amazing, even just a whispering or footsteps sound great.
But there are creepy catholics inside

The Augustiner Keller Biergarten is quite big, but I think the Hirschgarten (lit. deer/stag garden) is bigger.
But Munich is full of beergardens all over the city, and I almost all of them are worth visiting. Most significantly the big old chestnut trees are a sign that the place is a good place for having a good time.

Its a saying from the "good old days " of munich local radio stations. It was either Fleischi Fleischmann or Langemann & the morning crew, who "decorated" every record trivia with that statement, "world wide, in Bavaria, at this time of day"
In general as we are commenting on the youtube-channel of this nice young american guy, I think we should comment in english as he conceded in this video that his german language skills are very limited.

Thank you.

If you can master basic food menus and travel timetables, that will make things a lot easier! I have spent many holidays in Germany (Black Forest) and manage to enjoy it even though my German is very limited. Enjoying your videos, stay safe.
I am very surprised (in a negative way) that they don't have a Menu in english bc Munich is such an international City
We have in Stuttgart also good bier named Stuttgarter Hofbräu ❤
I love Munich. It has an amazing range of museums, quite a few are free or cheap one day a week.
Admittedly I was last there in 2008 so things may have changed. Take in the Toy Museum, the Neue Pinakothek, the old city gates, roman bathhouse.
u are a nice person ..Thanks for being in Germany ...have more Fun Dud... i like u attitude....
DRESDEN is a must visit. It was firebombed in WW2. Then subject to communist foibles; they did nothing for Dresden, their way of getting back at the Germans. After re-unification, Dresden has been slowly revitalised. The VW factory (built early 2000s) looks fabulous.
