On Robert’s right is John Paul Jones their bass and keyboard player. On his left (guy with ponytail) is Jimmy Page, their lead guitarist and he wrote this song. The drummer is Jason Bonham, son of their original drummer who was playing his dad’s kit and wearing his signature hat. You may have noticed at the end that he looks towards heaven, remembering his dad. Also Robert is Jason’s godfather. Thank you so much for reacting to this. I know I mentioned it a couple of times after you reacted to Heart and then Led Zeppelin and just heard your comment tonight about not taking suggestions from your TH-cam channel so I’m super glad someone else did.
One final note, after the performance Robert found the Wilson’s and told them he usually doesn’t like covers of Stairway because they never do it right, but they did a great job and he really loved their performance.

Apparently Robert Plant had asked Jason Bonham to attend the event in place of his late father John. Jason had told Robert that he had other commitments and was not able to attend the event. In another video out there they introduce Jason and you can see Robert point at him and laugh as he was completely surprised and happy to see him performing! Such an amazing tribute!!

    • @chrismaverick9828
      @chrismaverick9828 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Supposedly it was a bit deeper than that. Plant was evidently quite upset, probably angry, that Jason could not make the show to sit with them. After all, it was an important occasion that honored his late father, he should be there. I think Jason was entirely justified in keeping it a secret. How often do you get a chance to surprise Robert Plant one of the fore-fathers of modern rock with a performance of one of his own songs, in your own father's kit and place? Epic, and you could see Plant's happiness at the surprise of Jason being there after all, and of being punked the way he had in this circumstance.

If you'd started at the intro of heart the announcer said Jason Bonham on drums you'd seen Robert Plant stand up and point down at Jason. It's because Plant ask Jason to come and represent his dad. Jason said wish he could but he had a gig he couldn't get out of.

Obviously prefer the original but this version by Heart, especially with the arrangement and the choir, comes a close second. Having the guts to even attempt to cover that song in front of the band themselves is worthy in itself. I cannot imagine anyone else managing to pull it off. Heart was an inspired choice.

As regards of Ann's voice, you are right she sounds different bc of age. However, all of the songs that you listened from Heart are mostly hard rock or metal songs. But they also have more laid back and folky songs from the 70s where Ann sings in a different way.
For example, "Dreamboat Annie", "Love Alive" or "Dog and a Butterfly". You should check them out!

Some days all you need is a little Ann and Nancy Wilson in your life. Robert Plant has always said that he hates when people cover his music but at the end of this performance he’s in tears. The drummer is Jason Bonham who is the son of the original Zepplin drummer. Everyone wearing boller hats are also a tribute to Jon Bonham.

That guy with the nice smile...I think you were talking about Jimmy Page. It was Robert Plant, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones. The drummer was Jason Bonham, Led Zeppelin's drummer, John Bonham's son wearing his father's trademark bowler hat, as was the choir in tribute to his dad.
Did you see Robert Plant cry? He said seeing Jason on stage like that just brought him back to the days when John Bonham was with them.

You can't really compare a tribute to the original. I guarantee you Ann wasn't setting out to do a better version, she was just wanting to do it justice to honor the Zep guys. Plus, with a song as classic as Stairway nothing will ever be viewed as "better" no matter how good it may be. The original has it's own feel and mood that really can't be recreated or copied. The Heart version comes close because of the Zeppelin imagery at the beginning of the video -- as close as anyone probably can -- but it's still not the same. But with that said there is no one else on earth better to do a Zeppelin tribute than Ann Wilson. That was a masterful choice by the Kennedy Center people.

    I'm confused Anton.
I always find your thoughts and your reactions incisive and usually spot-on. But what a strange thing to ask ... if we preferred the original Led Zeppelin version vs. Heart's tribute.
Because you only recently heard the full, original Led Zeppelin version leaves you without any real perspective. The original was recorded and released over 50 years ago and had an immediate and profound impact on the music world, which only grew in stature as the years went by. It is always in the top five of the greatest rock songs ever written. And that's where it should remain.
The performance by Heart was a tribute to Led Zeppelin's brilliance, and official recognition by the US government arts program, and a better band could not have been picked to cover it, because Ann Wilson's voice has so many similarities to Robert Plant's voice. The original is always going to be better because it's the original. But everyone who has ever watched this tribute has agreed that this is definitely the best cover of the original that they have ever seen or heard.
I think maybe the challenge here is that you did the reactions basically back to back, without having the knowledge or perspective of the impact of the original, plus the knowledge that all three of the surviving members of Led Zeppelin were in the balcony that night, and the one member of Led Zeppelin who had passed away, John Bonham, was represented by his son Jason Bonham, who played the drums in this tribute, which made it all the more special.
Guess that's all I really wanted to say. I don't have a criticism or a recommendation. Some reactors like to have a little advance knowledge of what they are getting ready to react to, others like to go into it completely blind. In this case, going into it completely blind left you without several main details that would have helped you appreciate and understand this tribute better.
Keep up the great work ... as I said I do appreciate and enjoy your knowledgeable, intelligent and insightful commentaries. Also you have a great personality, a great smile and an overall handsome countenance, which are just bonus points lol.

Nothing that makes me more frustrated than the uselessness of comparing one artist to another, one song to another, one band to another, one version to another. You literally just finished saying that your expectations had robbed you of the opportunity to spontaneously feel on many occasions. Music like all forms of art, is subjective. You can't declare that a song or version is best. You can only describe how something makes you feel personally. Even if everyone else in the world disagrees with you, it does not discount your own personal feelings, which are colored by your own preferences, your upbring, your environment, your experiences. ☮️ Steve
