    Here in the Southwest United States we use something a similar called adobe brick building. You make a material similar to cob, and form them into bricks and let them try for a week and then stack them like normal bricks and more cob to hold it together. And then we plaster the houses with a slightly more clay rich cob. They're nice and cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and last forever and a day! :)

    Thank you! I have seen a lot of cob demo videos and this is one of the best in that the way the tools are demonstrated, and her comments on how to do it are really good. This really makes it look do-able, and easy too : )!

    I just love this way of living. I ordered the book The Hand-Sculpted House. I need to know more about Cobb. I guess the next step will be to take a course in this to gain the skills to start my own house....thanks for sharing.

    You could be right. Many people are notoriously close-minded toward anything to do with "hippies" and toward any house that doesn't look like a damn box.

    6:20 into the video she says "we didn't bring any other materials to this site".
    Where did they get the gravel from for filling the trench/foundations from which they excavated the soil and clay 🤷‍♂️.

    make sure you know where you want outlets and wiring to run before you start, and then just run the wiring through conduit like you normally would and build the cob around the conduit as you go.
    Of course, if a wire breaks repairing it would be a pain... but the installation would be straightforward.

    @stevenfuchs1877 - if you like books "The Hand-Sculpted House" by Ianto Evans, Michael G. Smith, and Linda Smiley
    Slightly different cob style is covered in "Building With Cob: A Step-by-step Guide" by Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce - less earthquake info in this
    If you like a what the heck sort of style Becky Bee's "Cob Builders Handbook" is very friendly, a little hippie dippie, but it's a nice way to get your toes wet.
    Google cob building classes in your area, you might find someone nearby.

    the welsh counties have introduced new planning legislation that makes it possible to apply for planning permission on agricultural land, the cheapest of which (low quality grazing fields and the like, with poor quality soil) can be found as cheap as £2000 per acre. trouble is getting permission is (understandably) flipping difficult...

      The more overhang you have would help. dig a drainage ditch around your house fill with large gravel cover with sod. works great. Drain towards lower end of property.

    how long does it take for this type of thick cob wall to cure and harden properly?

    • @rawmark
      @rawmark 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on several factors. Wetness of the cob and outside temperature. People in Europe don't build cob in the winter time because it takes forever to dry. On a summer day with temperatures about about 75 degrees F the wall will dry enough to apply another layer on top. We build cob in layers of generally one foot at a time. When this layer is dry or almost dry we can add an additional layer. There's a great video on Kevin McCabe's 10,000 sf home that he's constructing. It is beyond amazing.

    stone is best. and most cob homes are built in a 'trench' as she called it. the idea is to build from the earth, into it, apart of it, not on top.
