- How to build with cob, how to mix cob, earth building, cob walls. cob building techniques, cob courses and workshops. Come on a course too - check out dates and more info at www.cobcourses.com
This short video is from BBC1 Inside Out - shows Kate Edwards running one of her famous cob courses in the UK. If you want to find out more about cob building courses visit Kate Edwards' and Charlotte Eve's cob website at www.cobcourses.com
Here in the Southwest United States we use something a similar called adobe brick building. You make a material similar to cob, and form them into bricks and let them try for a week and then stack them like normal bricks and more cob to hold it together. And then we plaster the houses with a slightly more clay rich cob. They're nice and cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and last forever and a day! :)
Thank you! I have seen a lot of cob demo videos and this is one of the best in that the way the tools are demonstrated, and her comments on how to do it are really good. This really makes it look do-able, and easy too : )!
wow im booking on a course
both cob AND strawbales! I love it! I've been dreaming of building my own home for the last 10 years. Now it looks like I really could do it! Thanks to Cob!
I just love this way of living. I ordered the book The Hand-Sculpted House. I need to know more about Cobb. I guess the next step will be to take a course in this to gain the skills to start my own house....thanks for sharing.
How would you install the pluming and electrical before and during the construction of a cob house?
There is a video on a cob shed/building built in Stanly park Vancouver
Saw some other cob builders used a paddle to flatten the cob with.
im in ns to!, cape breton, we have some land out in marrgree and i can;t wait to start haha, we cut and dryed all of our limber last year. so excited :) wish the best to you! peace!
Going to be building next year with cob around montreal, canada. I have some good playlists on my channel if you want more.
Wonderful woman and students!! Thanks for posting, very inspiring!
Amazing. Hope to build one this summer.
God bless!
6:20 into the video she says "we didn't bring any other materials to this site".
Where did they get the gravel from for filling the trench/foundations from which they excavated the soil and clay 🤷♂️.
Im thinking of "cobstructing" a house in Argentina!
NICE JOB..can u tell me what plaster you use inside of the house, as in the video it looks very smooth and shiny..please share the amount of sand , mud and straw you recommend while making cob plz?
the community Quaker way of getting together and building in a day...we need to go back to that. in england i wonderif it would be eaier as they still seem to have their village life going on. idk
also, i live in Canada, could these houses stand up with extreme cold? would a wood stove pipe lined against the walls end up damaging them?
oh this is my dream to build and live in a cob house out in nature!!!
very nice...thx for the video
I agree wholeheartedly with you.
make sure you know where you want outlets and wiring to run before you start, and then just run the wiring through conduit like you normally would and build the cob around the conduit as you go.
Of course, if a wire breaks repairing it would be a pain... but the installation would be straightforward.
How do you start? How do you make the footings?
You could be right. Many people are notoriously close-minded toward anything to do with "hippies" and toward any house that doesn't look like a damn box.
I ALSO WANNA DO THIS!!! :D Thank you for showing me it's possible!
With cob houses how would electricity run through the walls? Im just curious.
thank you for this interesting project
I'd love to collect some tips from this woman
Im so building my own cob house, dose this also work in wet, cold places? im in canada and its always wet here
I must do this.
hey i have some questions. how does electrical hookup with a cob house, can you run wires for lights or heating vents within the walls? in regards to the straw, wouldnt that make for insects and rodents? anyone please let me know, thanks
Can anyone tell me how to get in touch with Kate Edwards? I'd like to participate in one of her workshops. Thank you!
great video, well done :)
I am currently researching and working my life towards building a cob house. I am 22 and live in one of the most wasteful place in the world, America.
@stevenfuchs1877 - if you like books "The Hand-Sculpted House" by Ianto Evans, Michael G. Smith, and Linda Smiley
Slightly different cob style is covered in "Building With Cob: A Step-by-step Guide" by Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce - less earthquake info in this
If you like a what the heck sort of style Becky Bee's "Cob Builders Handbook" is very friendly, a little hippie dippie, but it's a nice way to get your toes wet.
Google cob building classes in your area, you might find someone nearby.
Can these be build in Canada? How are they in a damp wet snowy environment. I live on the East Coast in Nova Scotia. Are they possible here? Thank you for your time.
The more overhang you have would help. dig a drainage ditch around your house fill with large gravel cover with sod. works great. Drain towards lower end of property.
Wow! I built my home and I love my home but suddenly, I'm envious!
she was on Mastercrafts,
Thank you
Truely righteous!
the welsh counties have introduced new planning legislation that makes it possible to apply for planning permission on agricultural land, the cheapest of which (low quality grazing fields and the like, with poor quality soil) can be found as cheap as £2000 per acre. trouble is getting permission is (understandably) flipping difficult...
how long does it take for this type of thick cob wall to cure and harden properly?
It depends on several factors. Wetness of the cob and outside temperature. People in Europe don't build cob in the winter time because it takes forever to dry. On a summer day with temperatures about about 75 degrees F the wall will dry enough to apply another layer on top. We build cob in layers of generally one foot at a time. When this layer is dry or almost dry we can add an additional layer. There's a great video on Kevin McCabe's 10,000 sf home that he's constructing. It is beyond amazing.
indeed you could!
Does any body no where I could get the clay from as I live in a town that would frown upon me digging the local woods up. (for free)..
im gonna build myself a kick ass cob castle..
How do you prevent fire ants from infesting the walls???
She's a genius, getting people to pay her to come build her house.
I hear these babies can withstand fire and earthquakes really well. What about tornadoes???
Cheeky. Free labour and their courses are nearly 600 quid per head! 👀👀👀
...super...
Haha! I need to start a home building course, so people can build my house too! Next, I'll start a BJ school where women can practice
How do you keep insects out of any wall.
Some people mix Borax (sodium tetraborate) into the cob when mixing it.
go for it man
There are other methods, also, Cal Earth- Super Adobe
im gonna save up to build me a house!
the idea is to find land without codes. or with few. most areas you can not unfortunately..
Brilliant! :)
interesting
all the sudden i feel kinda stupid living in a house made out of fiberglass and cardboard(drywall)
Let's do it then let's make our own community and take it back to days of now government my heart is pure
LOL dude @ 1:40 nice!
Is this going to erode in a tsunami?
stone is best. and most cob homes are built in a 'trench' as she called it. the idea is to build from the earth, into it, apart of it, not on top.
Can I contact with Kate please she has a Facebook or a male
Free labor
this kind of home building is sound like human is transforming in termite style but i like to be a termite to build my muddy termite hause hahahaha !!! nice project guys
I am jealous of dirt
Buityful but if you want to see mor model houses you visit afganistan pipel how de mead homs stil now

No can here in Hawaii...no clay. Bamboo, Koa, and volcanic stones are what you can use here.
Gah! I want to sit in a hug! :)
thank you znubzz. though it is not funny at all...
We click to watch a video about earth building, but could see only some people said to be involved in something related to earth building. It didn't hit the target. The built home was not shown, I lost my time. Sorry that truth hurts.
some cute chubby english girls right there, and hard working too. :)
Give me your money and i will show you how to build with cob. Not only will a show you, but you will actually be doing all the dirty work involved in the building of My extension of My house - Thank you - Brilliant fookin briliant
It is the best way for people to learn. We learn by doing, not by reading or watching videos.
Is there any problem with that?
You can do the same later after you learned by doing. And even meeting new people in the process to make a comunnity.
