that seems like a very big AND wise man who understands the whole point of jiujitsu (technique > strength). like he said, strength will only get you so far, there will always be someone who is bigger and/or stronger than you, but if you also have technique to back up that power of yours, you'll be unstoppable. then again, there's nothing bad about losing/tapping. i'd say you learn even more from losing than from winning.
I work full time and DJ 3 nights a week, been training for a year on and off. It is hard to let go of the lifestyle because Jiu Jitsu forces you to choose health, this was really inspiring!
If there is one thing you guys shouldn't change when making these videos, is the guy who does the sound editing. The music just adds to the value of the production.
More JiuJitsu clips for Big Guys please!!! There are also weakness for being big on the ground, more clips like this will help... This is great thank you...
I think size and strength does matter in BJJ. Robert Drysdale, the Ribeiro brothers, Roger Gracie, Braulio Estima, Marcus Almeida, Fabio Gurgel, Mario Sperry. All legends, all big dudes.
OMG.... I was just thinking about this topic. I'm not a huge guy, but I have a few lbs on most of the guys in one of the classes I go to. So I put sooo much EFFORT into trying not to smash my partners. So I play a lot of half/bottom game. So much so, that sometimes when I roll with larger opponents, I'm hesitant to use my weight and strength like I could. Crazy to see this video/topic now.
While I watched this, I just hoped it was 45 minutes long. Love the footage, the dude - as I'm also a big BJJ dude, and the theme. Definitely subbing the channel.
size/strength matters yea but at the same time if youre good enough you can overcome that size gap because thats the goal of bjj in the end is beat a bigger person
Size and strength matter allot. Just look at a girl rolling with a guy. Huge difference. Most women to have success with a regular guy need to be purple and up and that’s only because of strength differences.
I hope to one day be as good as him. I started BJJ and Freestyle Sambo at age 19. At the time I weighed 210. I now weigh 240, I am only 5ft 11.5 but I move pretty smoothly for a husky guy. I know I started really late, but I practice 4 days a week no matter what, whether I'm sick or something hurts, I don't let work or school get in the way. If I can I'll train 5 days a week. But I leave at least one day a week for Muay Thai for self defense reasons. But since Abraham became a legend and wasn't that young when he started, he gives me alot of hope.
that's good man keep it up you can do it, :) am only 6. foot tall, 252lb I started at 18, 4 mouths away from my 19 brithday and I have been doing this for 8 mouths, and I get a a little tap from my teammates they are mostly under 200Lb but I can tap lots, and am getting better, before I stared bjj I was wight lefting big time I was not jack like arnold but still have a fat on me, and am gonna go down at 225.
***** Probably genetics. My family is full of big overweight people. I'm not fat looking, but I'm not shredded either. I kind of have the Bolo Yeung Body, I have bigger arms than him, but a smaller chest. 😂
Christopher Corral i'm 155lbs but im not skinny, i kinda look athletic because i did fitness back in then, but hell it's hard as fuck to gain weight for me, and it sucks when i do bjj with 90kg or bigger guys..
Totally agree. From my experience the difference in technique between a total novice and a blue belt is as big as the gap between a blue belt and black belt. A blue belt can probably take-on a novice 50% larger than themselves but size becomes much more of an issue if the larger guy has an idea of what attacks to look out for and how to get a finish consistently with 1 or 2 techniques.
If Abraham can spread jiujitsu in DR you'll see some beasts come out of that country. Very strong, athletic, explosive genetics similar to Brazil. #dominicanpride
But most of us(martial arts practitioners) just do Judo in D.R(followed by Taekwondo and then karate), is just in the last 5-6 years that BJJ has become more popular and more bjj academies have opened in D.R
Most of the Dominicans profesional baseball players( and that had become actual MLB stars), come from very humble backgrounds, where their parents cant even afford to buy them new/used gloves, spikes etc without spending almost their whole month wages....so if a young dominican baseball player, is fully devoted to baseball, their parents will do every sacrifice to give them a chance to succed in baseball, which makes it harder for them to spend on stuff for school( so most of them barely graduate highschool). In the case of Abraham he comes from a more fortunate background, where he can actually persue a Profesional degree( laws in his case), and have a very confortable life for him and his family. So the point is, is really rare, to find a dominican of Abraham economic/social background, that would persue a career as a profesional baseball player. :)
Hey Abraham, one question if you don't mind, what kind of back problems did you have and what specific exercises you did to take care of the issue? Thank you.

I think I've seen that fat guy where he is training to fight, I guess I was a Brazilian jiu-jitsu championship in 1998, was still blue band. At the time was far less heavy, now looks like it should be with a 150kg, not Abraham?

Ya size and strength play a role in Grappling. If it didn't, weight classes wouldn't be such a big deal.

Nice guy.
I agree with all him sayed.
It certainly does. I know if i were 6"3 my guard would be nasty but at 5"8 passing my guard is like jumping over a cheese curl

That's true. But size and strength will eventually play a factor.
Whether or not size makes a difference is dependent on both practitioners skill levels

nyc king if you think that then you’re probably not that good tbh 🤷🏽♂️ there’s plenty of vids showing small guys taking down bigger guys
Years ago I met him in NYC. Marte had the biggest ego out of any bjj champion or legend I met as a student and he was neither.
It does matter if the bigger guy has higher skill advantages than you as a Jiu Jitsu competitor.
