I'm a new violinist, aged 70. My wife has told me that she thinks I'm in love with Nicky! (She's not wrong 🤣) Every time she walks past and sees me watching one of her videos she smiles and says "Awwwww ......'
These are fantastic learning aids. Thank you so much for posting them.

This was a fantastic video. As a returning violinist (three years break due to medical reasons) this is incredibly helpful to getting me back into the swing of things. Thank you so much for posting this! :)

Again your focus is on getting the mind and body in a calm state allowing focus. So smart and works so well. I am largely self-taught and have discovered this. However, I recommend some stretching exercises for hands and arms and body. 5 minutes did the trick. I have 2 violins, one a inexpensive strad and an expensive guarneri, both ring like a flower opening to the sun light. The cheap one does it best and so easy to know you have found gold. You are the first I can recall mentioning this very important aspect. Thanks for a beautiful list to use each day.

Lovely inspiration video, I pick up my violin each day because I have always loved it as an instrument. Whatever I try and play I like to put some free expression in it. I used to be a taxi driver and I was always talking about music to Catherine who plays the cello, she has worked with you in a string Quartet playing Italian Baroque music. I love Baroque music as it is more akin to traditional folk music. I don't know why everyone else wants to play the big concertos such as Paganini Brahms Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. What one hears with those concertos and what one can actually play are entirely different things through my experience. Adam Beanstock.

Wow, this was very insightful! Thank you. I liked how you stressed on the attitude, I find it's so important when I practice to make sure 1. I am calm 2. I am concentrated. That allows me to have the patience, persistence and interest (!) to take the time and find the right note and the right sound, no matter how long it takes and how quickly I lose it again. Practice makes perfect, if it's the right type of practice.

Hi Nicola, I just want to thank you for this video. I've written down all your steps into my journal and I read it everyday before practice. It's made such a huge improvement in how I feel and hopefully in how I sound 😁. I have been approaching and leaving my instrument with much more happiness. After completing a B.M and M.M followed by the unexpected circumstances of the world, I felt so stuck in my playing and almost wanted to give up. I feel like you collected all the good advice that different teachers give us and put it into one video which really simplifies things and makes practicing less intimidating. I'm excited to continue this routine..thank you thank you!!

Hi Nicky thanks for posting these fantastic videos as a beginner on the violin I’ve found them great to follow especially the video on vibrato which I’m Just getting to grips with, The strings I’m currently using are dominant strings which I’ve got from the violin shop in Edinburgh which you might know, They seem to be good as my violin was bought for a few hundred pounds what I would like to ask is do you think the strings you are using would make a big difference on a violin like mine Greetings Edward

A specific suggestion for folks - to practice sound in a time-efficient way, I find Simon Fischer's tone exercises quite remarkable. He claims he's taught them with great success to everyone from young kids to virtuoso soloists. There's a DVD, or it's in his Violin Lesson book.

@@nate8038 It's for players who already have some basic technique - ie they have a proper bow-hold and can draw a full bow relatively straight and with a half-decent sound.
Also - I don't think it's aimed at tinies - the kids in the video start at around 7 or so.
But at that point, absolutely. Get them the video and help them work through it. Or even better, talk with their teacher about it.
I'm not the only one who thinks that this might be the single most helpful exercise in the whole field of violin pedagogy...
