My Essential Gear for ANY On Location Shoot | Lindsay Adler

- When I go on location I prep my gear kit based upon the needs of the shoot. That being said, there are a few key items that accompany me on ANY location shoot. These are the most versatile tools that are lightweight and give me the flexibility to create.
Below is a list of the essential gear and WHY I have chosen these tools as my must-haves.
Canon R5 adorama.rfvk.net/JxzdE
This mirrorless camera features exposure simulation that allows me to preview changes in exposure in real-time (saving me time and effort). Its face and eye-tracking capabilities allow me to shoot at very wide apertures to simplify the background.
Canon RF 50mm 1.2 adorama.rfvk.net/g2gJg
If I can only take one lens with me, this is the one! A 50mm can allow me to capture wide shots, mid-length images, and even relatively closer shots (torso) without distortion.
Canon RF 24-70mm 2.8 adorama.rfvk.net/jWOVxb
If I need a lens that gives me flexibility quickly and I don’t need to shoot at extremely wide apertures, this is my choice. At 2.8 I can still simplify the background and create very wide shots to headshots in an instant.
Canon RF 85mm 1.2 adorama.rfvk.net/Rk5Qy
This is the 3rd lens I’ll consider if I need to shoot a lot of tight shots with a super narrow depth of field. This is great for portraiture or closeup beauty imagery.
Profoto B10 Plus adorama.rfvk.net/62K03
This strobe is portable, battery-operated, and packs 500 Watts. Perhaps to help me overpower daylight without having to carry something more substantial.
Profoto TTL-C Remote adorama.rfvk.net/W3o5G
When shooting in the middle of the day I need to be able to shoot in high speed sync mode, and this trigger provides that capability. I can shoot faster than my camera’s sync seed which allows me to ‘overpower’ ambient and shoot a wide aperture.
Westcott Rapidbox Switch Oct M adorama.rfvk.net/0JD3JR
This modifier provides soft light and opens up like an umbrella. It is super simple, portable, and affordable.
Profoto Medium Reflector adorama.rfvk.net/vvPBL
A silver and white reflector is a must-have for any (and every) location shoot. Bounce a bit of light back into the eyes or add a highlight to draw attention- it’s compact, light, and a must-have for refining natural light.
PhotoFlex Extra-Long Litereach Plus adorama.rfvk.net/XYNVVo
Rather than using a light stand, this light pole is fantastic for shooting on location. It has extra reach to allow me to elevate the light to very high positions, great for when the subject is elevated somewhere at a higher angle.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
She's so good at presenting and teaching.
The best!!
Natural presenter.
Really engaging body language and super articulate. Thanks for the great video.
Awesome!! Hope to see more videos from her. Great work by her and her team.
All of the instructors on this channel are great teachers. I always watch this channel.
Your assistant’s smile is beautiful. Please convey her and keep smiling 😊Good video as well
I always watch out for Lindsay videos. Good refresher courses if needed for personal work or other work.
Lindsay, we all know you know your stuff but to be able to keep my Nat like attention? You rock!!! Straight to the point not messing around. Thank you!
Toujours un plaisir de regarder vos vidéos. Bonne continuation.
We really need more of this :D
Love this post! Nice to see that a ton of gear isn’t necessary for on location shooting. Would love to see more posts showcasing how you work on location.
The bad news: You must continue creating videos like this until I die. The good news: I'm somewhat older than you. It's a compliment!
Lovely shots 😍
Lindsay! Hello from China. Bought many (almost all ) of your books! Thank you for your guidance.
SHE'S THE BEST..HANDS DOWN!
Very helpful, Lindsay. I liked that we were able to see how you positioned yourself and the model in the narrow streets. And your assistant is very pretty. I think she’d make a really good model
Wonderful. Thanks!
Awesome video thank you 🙏
Great Video!
I just got a 50mm 1.8, and on a crop sensor I'm finding that I have to back up quite a bit to get what I want in the frame. I also noticed that the DOF is so shallow that both eyes are not always in focus! So I can better appreciate what you're saying about your camera having auto eye and face focus. That would be handy.
Awesome presentation
I like the RapidBox system for their easy of setup and have several sizes. HOWEVER, I've found (from metering) that they suck up a TON of light--up to 4 stops in some cases. If you have a less powerful speedlight/strobe, this can really be an exposure challenge. Consequently, I've turned to the Glow EZ Lock softboxes as an alternative. They setup about the same and produce the same quality of light.
But thanks for your BTS videos for how you achieve your great results.
Thanks for the info.. Usually more than the softbox, the light itself makes the main difference in the quality.. so if the Rapidbox is sucking a lot of light, then thats a bad thing..
You really measured a four stop difference? Are you sure? That is absolutely bongos huge. That almost sounds impossible, but you have to see how experience with it.
awesome as always. the light reach looks like a must have. I caught A1s for cheap when the A1x was about to come on the market. Been trying to figure out if a should get a B10x plus or just an A2. you might have sold me on the B10x plus even though the price tag is pretty.
Thank you ❤
informative photo content.
Hi, when your shooting outside in more harsher lighting and your shooting HSS. What would be some of your camera and strobe settings
me too only I use a monopod. Also Sony these day, miss my Pentax.
Thanks for reminding me. It's been far too long.
Thanks!
Damn lightstand is back-ordered... Estimated to Ship: 10/2023
Interesting vidéo. Thanks for sharing. One important thing you forget : The assistant ! Useful with such a big pole to hold the flash/softbox or the reflector :) I usally work without an assistant and it's more complicated with wind, ground, etc...🙂
You can of course bring a stand then, we just are not really supposed to do that in NYC
@@lindsayadlerphoto Yes. It is also the case for most of big towns in the world.
Have you considered stepping up to a Phase One with leaf shutters.
Hi hi, Lindsay, i follow you since ages, now i have the r5 too, but with flashpoint 600w strobe with his trigger, with a big big problem, if i turn on the trigger the exposure simulation stops and a fake scene comes into the viewfinder, like i was in a studio, and there's no way to avoid this in all the settings of the r5, so all the time i have to turn off the trigger, get the right ambient light and then turn on the trigger to have the flash. Is it the same for profoto trigger?
Great video as always! I wish that lens was was the "nifty fifty"! The "nifty fifty" is a 1.8 and costs about what the taxes are for the 1.2 in the video which cost $2100. It's no where close to the quality of the 1.2 but I do love how light it is in hand. Have you ever used the 1.8 and compared it to the 1.2? Of only we could get L series quality in something that was lightweight!
My first lens was a nifty 50, and it was great-- it can certainly make do!
I wish I could shadow you on location one day here in the city. I just got back into my photography, and I'm currently shooting flying dress photos! The joy is bringing me back and I love the feeling 😌 ✨️ let me know if you need another person to assist or mentor xoxo
I live in Harlem
PS I purchased a few of the light recipes and how to make dresses without sewing and they are the BOMB! I will most certainly be using all of those tips and tricks! That pink tulle is my fave!!!
Where can we view your photos?
HSS vs ND is always the debate. Do you ever find yourself running low on flash power when using HSS?
How is the Profoto strobe power on location?
nice presentation. just purchased manny ortiz white beauty dish to try with ad300pro or ad400pro and xpro2s... Do you use back button focus or half press shutter button method ?
Jeeezzz I didn’t know tripods are not allowed in the streets. Did I miss something? Great video!
they can technically move you along, but doubtful they would ticket.
@@lindsayadlerphoto this is good to know. I used to live there, but moved upstate. I have been thinking to bring some of my equipment with me next time, but now I feel i have to google the dos and don’t 😅 I heard about the restrictions of drones flying in the city, this is bananas!… thank you!
ND filter would mean you don't need to use HSS, and then lower power strobe will work, faster recycle times.
Yes, but it still cuts out a ton of power of light. So its 50/50
The advantage is that, is that HSS abuses battery and bulb and in theory, it consumes the remaining lightsource lifespan faster compared to ND's. Also HSS cuts about 40%-50% of power, meaning you can't cut the BG exposure as effective as with ND. Alas, HSS is easier, and playing with ND's is a chore 😅
@@lindsayadlerphoto HSS you're fighting the sun with another light, yet ND filters have been used for decades, you cut the ambient light entering the camera then you need less power to just highlight your subject. It's really doable to shoot with a speedlight in full sun with ND filters, but the modern trend does seem to go for HSS. The other issue with HSS is you need faster shutter speeds, and some cameras only use electronic shutter which has it's own issues. As a user of the canon R5 and Fuji GFX 50s I see reduced colour depth with electronic shutter in post pushing.
How to use the Rapidbox on a Profoto light? Does Westcott provide additional rings for the same, or they are third party?
Its the profoto mount -- one of the options when you purchase !
Great video l! Do you shoot with those ND filters so you won’t have to get into HHS. I understand HSS can lower your batter
there are benefits/downsides to either approach. I'm not super worried about battery thankfully
Wow
And backpack ? Thanks
How do you carry all these if you move around a lot? Do you carry like a trolley? I don’t have an assistant 😅
😊
🎉
1:39 You’re doing a terrific job and keep up the good work but the “nifty 50” is the +/-$100 lens accessible to everyone lol not the $2k 1.2 lol
Either way you rock. Just followed you on Instagram 😃
lol fair but a Nifty fifty is a good place to start then. :P
@@lindsayadlerphoto haha 100% 💫
@@lindsayadlerphoto anywhere is a good place to start. Just remember this is a video about gear definitely not about pictures. Unfortunately these videos focus on gear which ends up being thousands and thousands of dollars and then people don't know what they're doing. These videos fail to explain that just buying all that gear you'll get some interesting results but if you don't know how to take a picture then what does it matter. I used to see beginners with full frame cameras and big professional lenses and I used to make me scratch my head.
Just note down the gear but look at what she's actually doing. Unfortunately the video is not going to explain the why and that's what's most critically important. For that you're going to have to study and study and practice and study.
I'm pretty sure someone has already said that the 50mm f1.2 is NOT a "nifty 50" but, I'm going to say it anyway.
lol. Well then you can substitute the 1.8 if you are on a budget
SUPER. SUPER , THE BEST VIDEOS

No tripods on the streets of New York City how in the hell do you do long exposures. I was there some years ago and used a tripod and the tripod police did no come after me.
well they can technically ticket you, but probably wont
@@lindsayadlerphoto if that is the law it is the craziest thing I have ever heard of. I do know after 911 NYC had the toughest laws anywhere about photography in the US but I was under the impression that most or all of them had been lifted over the years maybe this is one they forgot to do away with.
2023 "Who needs strobe? I shoot RAW and do all the editing in photoshop"
Where is the teacher with the hand me down gear getting professional results. We ain’t got nothing 1.2 come on profoto
The outcome looks artificial and contrived
you are teaching amateur lessons using high end pro gear....those 2 do not go together!
