Finally a bassist is playing cuban music properly instead of latin jazz-shredding the hell out of the instrument. Mambo and other cuban styles are NOTHING without the steady bassline and percussion dialogue.
That was the exact definition of smooth. I enjoy watching anyone who finds the groove and plays it like they own it.

I have seen scott played a few times latin music and honestly he has one of the best groove i've seen and much better and clean than other latin bass players . . honestly !! i'm not kidding . .real latin bass groose and real clean and clear . . Thank you scott, you can be our 2nd or 1st great bass player in salsa genre like SAL CUEVAS. i SURE WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU PLAYING WITH PAPO LUCA, ONE OF OUR REAL BEST PIANO PLAYER IN LATIN MUSIC.
That was some beautiful bass playing. Perfect interaction between the bass and the lead. You really took it there on that. Wow, if I could choose a bassist. You are an incredible bass player. Keep up the amazing work, you are great at what you do, and easily one of the best I've ever heard.
YES! Thank you, Scott. It's exactly what every bass player who is playing this style needs to learn. First time through you played the basic foundation of this killer groove, then a bit more free later, never losing the foundation. So many jazz players don't understand that.
I don't get why there even are 11 thumbs down, but whatever... this was a great video and a great performance! I like your channel, Scott, I learn meaningful stuff. Greetings from México
this is awesome....have you heard of a bassist named Sal Cuevas? he played bass for the Fania All stars (Salsa bands) in the 1980's. He was also the first to bring smashing a bass on the stage in the latin scene in NYC.
Sal was nice but the bassist who held fania down was Bobby Valentin. Dude is nasty and smooth. But they both and all bass players without knowing owe so much to the the MAN Israel Cachao Lopez. Jaco said himself that Cachao is the greatest bass player ever.
Yeah you did it, no flaws. For me it's fun to hear other things than jazz. The guitar plays straightforward and the bass turns the rhythm around and makes it exiting. I'm still waiting for your wife to sing. She was thinking about it but is still hesitant. Imagine: First the video is black & white, a sign comes on: Meet the wife! She walks in, the room turns into colors and she sings a song to bass. She walks out and the video turns B&W again with you trying to convince us to do this and that.
Spectacular playing! Further, this will make my wife happy, she loves Latin music. One request, for your play alongs would you wear your red glove? It's easier to see what your hand is doing. Honestly that's why I thought you wore the gloves. Question, I've noticed you play a lot using partially muted (reduced/cut harmonics) notes. Do the gloves help with that?
Hello Scott, i'm Johnny from México. I speak little bit english so i hope you understand me. Your rythm isn't called Mambo, rather it's called "Son" or popularly know as "Salsa" because the Mambo is more faster that the "Son". The "rumba clave" is perfect for the Mambo.
Great John, not only it's almost perfect English (apart from "rhythm" mispelled and a couple of other minor mistakes) but I was just about to write a comment with the same thing about "mambo" and "son". Great job by Scott as usua anyway! Only, I guess cubans usually play this kind of thing even more "laid back" - but I think this is also due to the use of double bass or the upright.
Hi Johnny, Marko is right, this tune is a Chucho Valdez tune called Mambo Influenciado and it's called mambo probably because it starts right away with the horns. Mambo is not a rhythm nor a tempo, in cuban/puerto-rican music the mambo is the section of the tune where the horns play riffs, usually between two sections of coro y pregón. And it can be played over son clave and/or rumba clave, it's the mambo section anyway. th-cam.com/video/Zy7JNMOIN2Y/w-d-xo.html
Come on! Saying check your Latin bass against the great Rubén Rodríguez is like telling a Golden Gloves boxer, "Well, you should check out Mike Tyson." This is fantastic playing!
Hey scott! I know this a random question to ask on this video, but as its your latest I thought Id comment here. Nowhere days bassist tend to play along with drums or the guitar, would you say that bassists should do this, or they should have their own parts? Thanks!
Latin jazz bass playing is amazing!

I´m cuban and I agree with you. this music will help evrery one whit the time problems. and it feels good... ta,ta,ta.tata....
Finally a non-hispanic bassist playing some cuban groove 🙌🏾🎸🇨🇺.
Thank you so very much Sr. God bless you.

That's some of the best bass playing I've ever heard you do, Scott --- dancing off-beats.

This is so excellent! I picked up a bass to tinker with latin ideas, and this will be a great resource to come back to.
Playing bass behind a tasty lead like this is just something else.
Excellent. What I hear in Latin bass is that it must hit before the one.

Wow not expecting such SABOR ( FLAVOR ) !!!!

Excelent bass groove.... it feels Like latin blood... mi hermano el Caribe sonando....
Phenomenal bass player
Cool! More latin stuff, please, Scott. Superb course about Cuban music with Oscar Stagnaro. Please, do me a favour, lad: A bit more of this! Ta!
love the groove to this
I am surprised that you Salvador Cuevas is not on your list of incredible bass players (Eyes Without A Face)
Very cool, good voice leading, the round p sound works well (although, a brighter more mod sound seems to work better in a room of live percussions…)…
waooo you sound good pure latin felling
You nailed the feel bro
My favorite,, salsa, !!!!!!!
Beautifully Done
Soo Nice!! This feeling is absolutely Awesome..
How do like this more? Anyway, thank you!
Yesss, very latin...thanks
Really cool groove !!
I can't understand why people dislike this video.
very interesting 👏
The feel is awesome
Hey Scott I think I know the purpose of the gloves but it wanna hear your reason and what type of glove it is please
Just search "why i wear the gloves" on this channel. I'm sure he's pretty sick of answering that by now.
It's for a condition called "focal dystonia". You can read about it from Scott here: www.scottsbasslessons.com/odds-and-sods/the-gloves
Beautiful pkaying. The guitarist is great too! Very clean and tasty
Also check out Sal Cuevas.
ye ye ye ye
definitely, salvador cuevas! ;)
loved it
Superb...
that bass is on fire
great man!
really nice groove

he's did before that the gloves are purely for medicinal purpose. they don't really have an effect on the tone.
+mattp2real *said. sorry for the typo.
Geez laweez some serious grooving. Sweet Mamba!

+Fabio D'Andrea Thank you very much! God blessing.
+johnpanditucci I believe the song is 'Mambo influenciado' by Chucho Valdez and he just translated the name literally

Kinda sounds like a El Grand Combo groove like Un
Verano en Nueva York
Nice
Cuban music is one of the hardest to get a grasp on for a bass player because the beat isn't as intuitive as most western music
Especially _timba._
Wow amazing!
Where do i get the chords of this playalong !!???
Hey great! The tab link is down! Do you have tab notation link?
Sorry about that, there is a working link below the video on this page! scottsbasslessons.com/blog/mambo-influence-play-along
Do you have flats or round wounds on that bass?
wow.
What is the name of the tune? it sounds familiar
A bit stiff but not bad! ...Better to check Ruben Rodriguez who has some great studio clips on Fender if you want to get your Latin playing together
Come on! Saying check your Latin bass against the great Rubén Rodríguez is like telling a Golden Gloves boxer, "Well, you should check out Mike Tyson." This is fantastic playing!
Oh yes 😀

Thanks!
you forgot CARLOS DEL PUERTO sr AND CARLITOS DEL PUERTO jr
What kind of bass is he playing? It looks similar to mine but beefier :0
I think it's just MIM P Bass with a Badass Bridge added to it.
It's a Fender Precision bass
It's a Fender Nate Mendel Precision Bass ;)
This is a composition of the great Chucho Valdés.
slamming!
Who the heck plays that amazing guitar?
Gozalooo' masssss man :P (Y)
👍🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Sabor!!!
Awesome playing my man, but you look pretty stressed considering the tune you're playing ; )
*Influenced Mambo
sounds like a weird midi tumbao triggered by iReal book charts
It sounds sexy to me..
His playing is so smooth.
