    I should mention that the 1981 music was used with the 1982 intro, as seen here: th-cam.com/video/9EP33o8EoJk/w-d-xo.html

      I think what happened there is because they might have changed formats midstream in early '82 (that broadcast of MacArthur on NBC Sunday Night at the Movies presented in that clip is from 3/28/82) and refurbished the opening into what it would be for the 1982 and 1983 seasons, while still having the 1981 music.

      @bmasters1981 I can give some context to that specific clip. The Sunday Night Movie was created after the other intros had most likely been finished, and as such one more intro had to be created. It's likely that the animators decided to update the animation at this point, which later became the basis for all the movie presentations starting the next season.

    Without a 3D software suite like we have these days makes you really wonder how this was created. It's still quite a bit of work for even today.

      It’s a combination of cel animation and computer animation. If you look closely, you can see how the filmstrip transitions from one medium to the other, a few peacock feathers at a time.

    The original "Let's All Be There" with the Robert Abel animation appears to have only been used from at least July to September 1984. The '83 Be There was still in use as late as May of that year as it appeared on V The Final Battle.

    There are two high-quality sources I know for these: the 1981 version turned up on a LaserDisc of Robert Abel's work, and the 1983 version turned up on a 1" tape. Both are on TH-cam.

    Without a doubt the best music that went with this intro was the 1983 "Be There" theme. Everything was timed perfectly. The 1981 "Our Pride is Showing" theme isn't too bad either. If I had to rank the themes it would look like this:
    1. 1983 / Be There
    2. 1981 / Our Pride is Showing
    3. 1984 / Let's All Be There
    4. 1982 / Just Watch Us Now

    I have to say as a 3 year old in 1983, that opening along with the NBC chimes meant time for bed.

  • @BalticoYT
    @BalticoYT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Personally like the 1981 version. The chimes actually sound like a part of the music instead of sounding like an afterthought in the other ones.

    That 1984 version sounded too epic and there's a version they used for A-Team's big premiere in 1983 as well.

      @@starfishorca2975 That's because it's sourced from a version straight-off of 1-inch videotape, which is as clean as it can possibly get (and is also the video source of the '82-'84 intro). th-cam.com/video/jaDk7gCc-G8/w-d-xo.html
      The others are captured from VHS which, depending on the tape condition, signal quality at time of recording and the encoder settings can be quite hit-or-miss :(

    The 4th intro was short lived. I didn't know that the 4th intro music was for a brief time played on the movie intro which lasted till 1987.

      It was indeed-- the opening of this broadcast of the 1981 hit On Golden Pond w/Hepburn and the two Fondas (albeit a few seconds are cut off) illustrates thereto.

    I just noticed that there is an animation error in the first one, at around 0:05 seconds, where part of the filmstrip dissappears at the bottom of the screen for about a second.
    The others don't have that error.

    Could you do a restoration of this NBC movie intro;
    th-cam.com/video/lzrds4zFlFM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GHYdj16HXhUZ1Z0W
    It's extremely rare because it wasn't used very long, likely due to the "disco" style music which was being phased out at the time in the early 1980s.
