Leiter makes more sense as a reliever. He’s great through 3-4 innings but super easy to read and batters get comfortable and tear him apart. This could also help develop him into a better starter over time.
I'm of the persuasion that it's still too soon to move Leiter off of starting, especially if it means he becomes a 3 inning long man. Whereas with Gray, he's proven he has back of the pen stuff, and it could breathe a second life into his career as he ages. Just imo.
Yea, right now he pitches too high in the zone to be on the mound for multiple innings. That works in college and maybe in the minors, however MLB hitters are too dialed in.
Good show. My brother and I have kicked around this very idea many times. I like the idea of moving Gray to high leverage relief where he would no doubt excel, but I would want to see at least one more quality starting pitcher added to the depth chart before I'd want to see it happen. Whether that's Sasaki, or someone we trade for, someone who is at least a 4th man in a quality rotation.
Zack Britton is another starter turned reliever that was lights out. I agree on Gray moving to the bullpen, though I think the Rangers will have to be very malleable with it due to the injury history of the starters.
John Gray is highly effective as a reliever, but I’d rather bring him from the rotation into the postseason as reliever because of the wear and tear on his arm. Not sure if he came strictly just out of the bullpen if he would be as effective in that fashion. Specially if he’s not used to it.

I think Leiter could be a crazy good as a closer
