  • Take a seat in our workkshoip for 20 minutes and assist us in the process of inslalling a horse hair strings set on a bowed lyre (jouhikko).

    How many hairs makes each string? Example: c string, d string, etc.

      I usually put around 35 in the side strings. Middle string about 45.

      Simple, they all vibrate as one. Like ONE big horsehair.

      The significance of twist is also the 'spring action' created that allows for them to stretch a little more, without breaking. They can be pulled tighter.
      I have not tried untwisted strings on a bowed lyre, but the sound of the Kobyz really shows off sound of unwisted horsehair strings.

      @@barefootarts737 Very interesting. I have twisted my strings now as well, and, yes the sound is better. I also play qobyz, but there u finger it in a different way, maybe I should try too. Thanks for your advices.

      @@robabnawaz I love the sound of the Kobyz. That sound is special, and I always thought it was related to the hairs laying parallel instead of twisted.
      I am curious if you will lose any particular sound quality with the twist on a kobyz. Let us know.
