    ___
A freefall-qualified military jumper was transitioning to civilian skydiving through the MFF Transition Program. Having prior training on ripcord-equipped gear, the student forgot his new training (throw and let go of the pilot chute) and reverted to his old training instead (hold on to the ripcord through the deployment process). The outcome was a cutaway and reserve deployment while still holding the ripc-, err, pilot chute in his hand.
When it comes to transitioning to new systems and gear, practicing pilot chute pulls on the ground is critical for a successful and safe transition.

Devon Holmes dude, funny story you just reminded me of.
When we first bought this Japanese Mitsubishi 4x4 for our gliding school it came with all Japanese settings on the radio, and the Frozen CD stuck inside of the player.
Our courses run for ten days, and for the first two courses until one of our students somehow got the cd out I had ten guys singing ‘let it go, let it gooo’ for 20 fucking days straight haha
I almost forgot about that hahaha

Jordan Tehero I have ZERO jumps under my belt but that will soon change as I'm a licensed professional pilot that is about to become Aerobatic certified as it's been a childhood dream of mine. When doing Aero you are REQUIRED to wear a chute so I will be jumping often. That way if that day actually comes there is zero hesitation and 100 percent concentration. And that scared the shit out of ME lol

    • @KeepinYouUp07

There's a recorded incident of a skydiver jumping without his rig on accidentally. No one else noticed it on the plane...once they all noticed in freefall, they tracked like their lives depended on it, because they did. I was told if he was able to grab a hold of someone they both would have died. I heard that story from a respected instructor. Moral, check your gears THREE times before jumping. Complacency KILLS!

Hell, he is even stable when both cutting the main and pulling the reserve. Shit, I've got 500+ jumps and I don't know if I would pull my reserve calm and stable like that.

Dozens of malfunction videos and injuries that I've seen, I think this beats them all. The last option was teetering on hopelessness. How do you not notice that pilot chute flapping around in your peripheral? I held on to every one of my rip cords and shoved them into a pocket (my instructor said I could trash the rip cords if I wanted), I was so psyched when I was able to pull the big boy throw out. Coaches should emphasize new info as best they can, for they might get a little lax with bro - to - bro interaction, to not come off as insulting their bro student's intelligence. Know when to get serious, know when to help your student relax.

I can only imagine that this is the very reason. This video imo shows that students should not train on one system and then swop to another. You can laugh at me, but i did pull the cutaway puff instead of the main and waiting for something to happen on my No. 6 AFF jump. At least i did remember rule 1. : Do something! I do understand well that things can go wrong and there is not anyone to blame. You are student and you are under extreme stress - you may do things wrong... . First rule:
Do something - pull all you have is better then do nothing. ;-)
You may ask why i pulled the cutaway first... because i had a malfunction on the main the jump before and this expirience was in the brain... just did it again that way. Simple mistake, fatal outcome.

After watching these and realizing this is way more dangerous than I thought. I'm surprised the jump master doesn't have a carabineer on their harness that they can use to attach to a student who has screwed up all his shoots. I mean something like he can grab the kid and clip the student into his hardness like a emergency tandem hook up.

    • @Jpreou
      @Jpreou 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Solo gear isn't designed for two people. Quite apart from design strength and intent, there simply aren't properly designed-in attachment points for such a venture.
      2. The instructor isn't trained on how to do that, even if it was a good idea (and it isn't).
      3. A solo parachute, especially the kind likely to be worn by instructor, simply isn't designed to take the weight and speed of two people, and...
3a. If it survives the opening intact and without broken lines or torn fabric, and
3b. The two jumpers survive the opening shock, then...
3c. The landing speed both horizontally and vertically may well be so high as to at least injure both of them, likely seriously, if not kill them anyway.
Tandem skydiving gear is big and strong and bulky for a reason!
I'd dispute your "way more dangerous" statement as well - proper training, proper mental attitude, currency, and properly maintained and packed equipment and skydiving is just about as safe as it can be - but like most air / aviation sports, it is somewhat unforgiving of mistakes.
...and yes, I jumped for 20 years as instructor and tandem jumpmaster.

I don't jump so I'm trying to figure this out. He pulls his rip cord, but he holds onto it preventing the drogue chute from deploying and pulling out the main. He has a brain lock and holds onto that sucker and ends up deploying his reserve chute. Is that right? Amazing the guy didn't release the main chute too.

He did cut away the main but it didn't come out of the container until the reserve started inflating. The video ends, but I'm assuming that the no longer connected main fell away from the jumper (also assuming he finally let go of the pilot chute).

Dude I never jumped outside of a military jump but the dude just held on? That's what I'm gathering... but that's a level of dumb panic that's hard to grasp.

DavemacK II the reserve pilot chute was caught in the burble above the skydiver. He should have been trained (like that would do this guy any good!) to look over his right shoulder after reserve deployment to move the burble and let the pilot chute catch some clean air.

Randall Johnson you’re the reason why this sport is turning into a circus of asshats - he was a STUDENT. He made a MISTAKE. Ultimately, everything was fine. Hopefully, you aren’t an instructor. You’re probably just a 500 jump wonder who thinks you’re God’s gift to skydiving. Thank you for all you do for the sport... makes me feel safe, warm, and tingly. Blue skies.. or does that only apply to people that have over 10,000 jumps?
