    OJCs are still the backbone of my jazz collection. Of course I have a bunch of AP, Acoustic Sounds, and Tone Poets, but those OJCs really punch above their weight class! Pretty respectable sound for the price, and a lot of albums that were otherwise hard to find. I'm thrilled to see you keeping them alive!

    I loved buying OJCs in the 80s and 90s. One thing you didn’t mention is that it was one of the first reissue series the reproduced the original cover art and record labels. This made the so much more appealing than reissues of that time from labels like Blue Note and Columbia where they tried to make them look more modern.

    Correction: most early OJCs in the 1980s were mastered in all-analogue by Gary Hobish, who signed “GH” in the deadwax. The confusion stems from the fact that Hobish worked for the George Horn studio, and their initials are the same. I am sure that George Horn was supervising it all, but the actual mastering was done by Hobish. This error became proliferated in the internet era, but a few years ago Hobish himself came forward and said that it was him who mastered them before Phil de Lancie took over in the late ‘80s.

    The OJC series was so great. Back in the day I bought about 60% of the OJC catalog. Aron's Records in Hollywood carried most of them. I was in there 2x per month. Finally the owner handed me an OJC catalog and said phone in what you want, I will get it for you and you can pick it up when it comes in. As you noted, I had spent so many hours looking for original pressings only to find them beat up or so highly priced they were out of my budget.

    You’re killin’ me, Chad…
    Where’s “Lightnin’ Hopkins, Soul Blues” SACD? I’m reading the website as noted on the several times reissued vinyl that the SACD was created at the same time - but….ummmm.. never got released? (Not to mention the other 12 Prestige Stereo titles….)
    Maybe I’m the only one asking about them? If that’s the case, guess there’s not enough demand to fulfill the “Prestige 25 Stereo SACD releases… but i surely hope not.
    The Original Blues Classic CD is a top notch version of that release, but i keep dreaming of an Acoustic Sounds remaster to bring that CD to life.
    How about a limited run set of the last 13? I’d pay $400-$450 for that set right off - and make it a numbered edition (meaning, number on each mini-LP gatefold sleeve instead of the ‘number on the set box’. Better yet, number the box and the mini-LP gatefold sleeves.)
    Just my $0.02 cents….

    Love the OJCs. For those of use that have been collecting for 30, 40+ years, those were sometimes the only way you could get your hands on some of the titles. Despite being budget albums, the sound typically was not budget and they were generally pressed very well (better than most of today's albums.) As Chad says. they had the cover art, but didn't go crazy and try to up-charge by using fancy paper. That said, all the covers of the OJCs I bought new are still in good shape with little in the way of tears or cracks. Thanks for the history lesson and so awesome to hear that the OJC series is being re-released.
    P.S. I had no idea CCR had such a positive influence in the world of recorded jazz!

    Wow, I always saw OJC's as "library" CD's. When I got into jazz during the 90's I borrowed them, 5 or 6 at a time from the library. I think they had every title that was out. I would copy them on cassette tapes and return them (illegal, don't judge me). I never thought they would be sought after by collectors.

    • @DorianPaige00
      @DorianPaige00 ปีที่แล้ว

      The music wasn't current in the cd era so the titles were somewhat limited. Tower records carried most of these. I have thousands of them and they are the cornerstone of any respectable jazz collections. A lot of R&B is also limited and still in demand like Stax and Motown (with exception to perennial greatest hits, compilations).

    I bought the OJC Miles Davis Quintet Prestige titles from AS that appear to have been pressed at RTI around 2010-2015 and the Bill Evans Riverside titles from you, also RTI pressed around 2008-2011. I always thought they sounded great but for about $20 each, figured they couldn't possibly be from analog masters... Are you suggesting they might actually be AAA records?

    • @MX-S
      @MX-S ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your comment, but never understand why folks associate AAA with necessitating a higher cost. After all, it represents how most records, throughout history, were always done.
      My point being, once a lacquer is cut, the father-mother-stamper-to-LP record process is the same. The presence or lack of digital equipment in the labor of getting to a cut lacquer seems more like a front-end cost that should not influence the price of the individual record by more than a handful of cents. I think it's why the focus of AAA premium products tends to be the weight of the vinyl, where it is pressed, and the quality of the packaging.
      The sooner we get away from the idea that AAA should mean 'premium', the sooner we'll have more affordable releases of non-digital provenance (Blue Note Classic Series, for example).

  • @markh.9822
    @markh.9822 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chad, what's the reason Workin With Miles Davis Quintet was skipped for the 2013 Prestige series? Was there tape issues or did they not let you do it? Or was it because you already released it in the early 2000's?

    • @markwilding3828
      @markwilding3828 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is being released in the new Craft OJC series soon, mastered from original tapes and RTI pressed, so I guess there are no tape issues.

    Tried 33rpm UHQR Kind of Blue...Sounds great but my 4 track 7.5ips reel tape from CBS sounds much better. And just found out Blue Note is making the same or better quality at $38 in their Tone Poet Series.

    • @MX-S
      @MX-S ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tone Poet & Classic Series are very good, but mainly from a materials and pressing point of view. They do not necessarily sound better than their respective tracks from the Blue Note Reissue series: mid-70s, and often sound a bit compromised. Kevin Gray is great, but his EQ choices album-to-album, when cutting a lacquer, can be hit-or-miss.

    Chad...My comment isn't about the subject of this vid but I can't find any way to get hold of you regarding your subscription programs. I've spent several hours reviewing your subscription page and had decided to sub to many of the listed programs. When I called to sub to the available programs I was was told that you don't have subscription programs at this time. I understand that some programs require that you buy complete sets, and I understand why, but the programs I am interested in are clearly stated as available. If you have cancelled these programs that's fine, but shouldn't you take down or modify the subscription section to reflect this fact? It would save shmucks like me a lot of time and also the disappointment of not being able to obtain your excellent product easily and on a monthly basis. I wonder how many of your loyal customers have done the same but have not brought the issue to your attention. I'm hoping this comment finds its way to you and that you take it to heart. I'm also hoping that we will meet someday so I can thank you for addressing the issue. If I am mistaken about these programs I ask for your forgiveness in advance. Thanks Chad.
