Very interesting! I'm having to put together a short intro slideshow on Geddes to share with my classmates for my Community and Regional Planning course... thanks for all the information and insight!

What a fascinating lecture. Geddes was indeed brilliant and influential, but sadly even he could not save our Scottish towns from the assault of "anywhere architecture", the plague of placelessness... One need only visit the urbanising peripheries of most Scottish towns to see how little today's architects, planners and designers seem to care for the theories of Geddes.

Thanks. I agree. Geddes would not, for example, admire Queen Margaret University (QMU), outside Edinburgh. The buildings could be in any country and the green field surroundings are a sterile desert for the intellectual curiosity Geddes admired and encouraged. The big problem is that architects and planners haven't a clue what they should be doing and are not willing to consult the profession which could help: landscape architecture.

I wonder If I could translate this video to Spanish so that most people could see your class

Tom - so are you saying that modern landscape architects are insufficiently skilled and non specialist to fulfil Geddes’ ambitions?

I think landscape architects need a broader, Geddesian, view of their profession and that this will should lead to a willingness to keep learning new skills. So we need a generalist vision and specialist skills.
