It is awesome to see a young lady working on upholstering a beautiful chair. A trade that is disappearing. I am 70 years old and I would live to learn how to upholster.
My cousin reupholsters old furniture all the time. She's so good at it, too. She's also good at sewing so she buys pretty fabric to make pillow cases and clothes for her grandkids. When she was in high school in the early 1980s, she won an award for her sewing skills in the Home Economics. Unfortunately, that class was taken out of the high schools. It is rare to meet anyone who does reupholstering at their home.
I’m a new subscriber and female upholsterer, the work is hard on my hands. I don’t have your skill set I try everyday to learn something new about the old ways. My grandfather was a master upholsterer. 😂Your work is beautiful and the old ways and old masters were true craftsmen. I look forward to more of your videos.
Thank you so much! I envy you that upholstery runs in your family - what a beautiful way to learn the craft. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos, and I look forward to sharing more :-)
Seriously, I was mesmerized watching you do an excellent upholstery. Absolutely, stunning. I’m 76 years young and still do my own upholstery. New subscriber now. Can’t wait to see your next project. Love the finished chair. The material was meant to go on that chair.
Thank you for your wonderful comment and for subscribing! I’m truly inspired that you’re still upholstering at 76-what an amazing passion to carry with you. I hope I’ll still be as dedicated and creative at your age. Wishing you lots of joy in your future projects!
Lovely job! When I did my upholstery course I wasn't allowed to use a staple gun - everything had to be hand-tacked which was a real pain. Good to see that the times have shifted a little ..
Thank you for sharing this! I love hearing about these things. Where did you follow your upholstery course? We were indeed allowed to use staples if we preferred, but our teachers emphasized that for truly antique pieces, it’s best to stick to fully traditional techniques to honor their original character. With this specific chair I was happy stapling haha.
@@cleonnns it was just a locally-ran course as part of adult education curriculum here in Northamptonshire. I was very disappointed not to be able to get my staple gun out as I've used it loads of times and find it invaluable - sometimes getting a better, and smoother, result that traditional tacks.
Labor intensive but so worth the results! Gorgeous finished project. I have a similar chair that has a very worn needle point covering and a little stool. It is my favorite to sit in since I’m short. TFS♥️
That was so much fun to watch, I have 2 chairs almost the same as this one, I need to start to restore them but not the old way like you did I am not a pro like you are. I bought the tools and materials I need except the fabric, I am planning to have that dark green leather for the seat part and fabric to match it for the back support. So I am still shopping around, it’s not cheap but it’s cheaper to have it done professionally they are asking $900 for each chair plus I have to buy the fabric from them so they will both cost me $2500. So I am learning from you and other people on how to and I thank you for sharing your experience with us. God bless you always, Amen 🙏
Restoring chairs yourself is such a rewarding process, even if it’s not done entirely the old way. Your plan with dark green leather and matching fabric sounds beautiful-what a great combination! Best of luck with your project, and I’m sure you’ll create something amazing. Thank you for watching!
@@Lake1ism thank you, well originally they were with leather and fabric but they were so old then my sister took them to get them done professionally and she made them all fabric that was 20 years ago and now I want to change them.
Thank you so much! I had no idea either before starting my course. I used to do sewing projects that took days, not months, so it’s been really fun to dive into something so detailed and time-consuming. Glad you enjoyed it!
First rate work, Cleo, and thoroughly enjoyable to watch you doing it. Even more enjoyable to watch because you didn't spoil the experience by adding music! Much as I enjoy music it becomes irritating and intrusive when it is unnecessary or beside the point. ♥️
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it-sometimes the natural sounds of the work really tell the story best. I love watching those kinds of videos myself too 😊
Amazing! Simply beautiful! Such skill and dedication to perfection. I see many similar chairs in thrift stores, which desperately need re-upholstering and feel sad that I don't have the skill or patience or time at the moment to restore them. Thank you for showing us what it takes to restore one of these pieces, and not making it seem like one waves a magic wand and poof it's done.
What a fantastic job, great tutorial. Never seeing a true restoration that involves upholstery. Saving it and following you! Thank you for sharing this. Many years ago I decided to reupholster my only sofa. It was a do or die proyect as I had never done this before 😅 In a very methodical way I undid half of the sofa first as I took notes and drafted what I was seeing. Then undid the other half. Used the removed pieces of fabric as template to cut the new fabric. Bought the upholstery needles and thread, which are super helpful for other projects too. It works! Highly recommend to give it try. Maybe start with a smaller project. 👍🙋🏼♀️💕
That's really impressive, a whole sofa! It's such a fun way learning by doing. And I experienced the same by discovering those rounded needles, they come in very handy by other projects. Thank you for watching and your compliments!
I totally agree with @Joans20thCentury's comment! Step by step, it was awesome to watch. Yes, of course, the effort was well worth it! Thank you for sharing!
Your work is as fascinating as it is precise. Exactly even hand stitches as they would be on an elegant evening gown. I’ve owned eight-way hand tied furniture but have never seen the process done. I’m a new follower and will enjoy every video you post. Thank you for sharing your craft.
Talk about the “Traditional way” amazing job! Now we know why these pieces last for generations. Where has all the pride and effort put into every piece gone?… why has our world become”instant”. Everything…. I wish I had her talent and hands I’d love to restore these treasures
The chair is absolutely beautiful. It was so interesting and enjoyable to watch. Your work is exceptional, and thank you so much for sharing. Greetings from Arcata California.
As a retired Historic Furniture & Objects Conservator my expertise on this artifact would be limited to the wood and coatings with nothing but minor repairs to upholstery or removal of for archiving. As a craftswoman I absolutely loved my career. I went into Zen mode with you here feeling every stitch and tug. Watching this was equivalent to upholstery porn. Fascinating in all the details, impossible to change the channel and I'm never gonna do it in real life.😂 Excellent work! Thanks for posting.
Thank you! I love that you felt the zen mode too, it’s my favorite part of the process. ‘Upholstery porn’ made me laugh, maybe I’ve found my calling after all. Glad you enjoyed watching!
I am an English lady living in France and love these chairs. I can pick them up cheap here in charity shops and have done four for our Chambre D’hote. I revarnished and change the material and trim. Sometimes studs and sometimes braid. I have never had one that’s needed new wadding though so was really glad to see you doing this for future reference. Thank you.
How wonderful that you’ve been giving these chairs a new life for your Chambre D’hote. Such a lovely setting for them. Changing the material and trim is a very creative process, and I’m glad the video could be helpful for future projects!
The most proficient upholstery work I’ve seen on TH-cam.
Thank you, that’s very kind!
You’re a great upholsterer .
Great artist🎉❤
Really in awe watching the restoration process. You are one in a million!
Hi ma’am love to see your videos please show us more your works like this and let us know the name of all the tools you are using for this your hobby

Qué maravilloso y arduo trabajo. Eres una experta como pocas. ❤🎉❤🎉
You are never too old to learn, go for it!
You just need some gilboys rose gold on the wood and you’re good. Excellent tutorial…how you learn to do that so well…
I can't believe the amount of detailed work you did on that chair! You are a true artist!
It's absolutely beautiful. This is what happens when an object is put into the hands of someone who knows what she is doing. Kudos.

It is very hard work
Upholstery has always been a male dominated trade due to how hard it can be, but it is nice to see more females showing an interest!
That will be good for another 100 years
You definitely understood the assignment at that Belgium upholstery school. You tied those springs down like an old pro.
Haha thank you! 👵🏻
Stunning. Such patience and talent. Thank you for sharing. I now have a completely new understanding of restoration methods.
By the time you were done, I had fallen in love with the fabric. Awesome work.
Wow, I’m jealous of whoever gets to have that chair in their interior. It’s absolutely stunning! 😍
Thank you Marlous! One day I upholster a chair for you ☺️
WOW! Beautifully done! A true labor of love! ❤ Fascinating to see the process!
Bravo. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 if I have some beloved Classic furniture to restore, I would’nt want anyone other than this remarkable young Lady 😍

This is what IKEA furniture dreams of. Excellent, mindful work
Thanks Kris!
Wow that's a lot of work, the chair will be lovely for many more years.
Absolutely superb! These skills are being kept alive thank goodness, and hopefully be passed down to the next generation. Thank you for sharing. 🙏👌
Wow! So that’s how it’s done. Be hard to find this type of craftsmanship anymore. Fabulous.👍
