If I had -x + 4y = 8 and 4x + 3y = 6, y is not 0 even though I redice 8 and 6 to4 and 3 and they match?

But 4 and 3 are not the coefficient of x in the example you gave. The trick only works when the value you will get are the coefficient of x in equation 1 and 2.
