  • The world was in shock when the Notre Dame cathedral was devastated by a fire three years ago. Now, 3D scans help reconstruct this monumental cathedral in the heart of Paris. All thanks to one historian’s passion for mapping ancient buildings.

      Absolutely dillusional claim. A plaque on an eight centuries monument... WTF! Even Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who literally saved the cathedral 150 years ago, didn't get that privilege...

      @smitajky ปีที่แล้ว +23

      There will be many heroes. A lot will remain unsung. But whether a plaque is there or not I am sure that no one could ask for a better monument than to be able to say "I helped to give you that" referring to the cathedral. In fact it might be churlish to mention some and leave others out. From the most humble who have donated some money or cleared away wreckage, to firefighters who fought to save as much as possible. To politicians who inspired and supported the work. To craftsmen who painstakingly resurrected ancient skills. We are fortunate to have the records provided by Andrew of course.

    I heard about this work some time ago, but I had not heard that Andrew Tallon had passed away. That's very sad and I offer my sincere condolences to his family. It cannot be understated how important this work is in the restoration of Notre Dame. I wholeheartedly agree that he deserves to be officially memorialized for having played such an important role in the restoration.

    Thanks to Andrew Tallon and let's not forget the precise architectural surveys of the medieval structures, in particular the framework, which were carried out in 2015 by the architects Rémi Fromont and Cédric Trentesaux, in addition to those made in 1915 by the architect Henri Deneux and of a dissertation produced in 1995 by V. Chevrier on dendrochronology. In addition, a scan of the framework was carried out in 2014 by the company Art Graphique et Patrimoine (150 scans).

      @joshschneider9766 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@filanfyretrackerthey did more than contain it they intentionally pancaked the roof and suctioned all the fire fueling oxygen out of the building, or so the story I heard goes. I suppose that totally could be rumor.

    • @CitronCassis
      @CitronCassis ปีที่แล้ว

      Firefighters also said in a French video that they had to change their plan (after containment on the roof) because the wind was blowing and sending the fire in the North Tower.
      If the wood of the North tower and the huge Bells were in fire, the heavy bells would have fallen and destabilized the whole tower. Then the whole facade of the building could have collapsed
      So they went inside this tower (risking their Life) to save this tower.
      It was a decisive action that explains why damages are « limited ». It could have been worse.
      PS 1 : Also, the lack of very long ladder in the center of Paris was a mistake (2 of them were located in Versailles and with traffic jams it was long to send them, they lost a long time). Guess they will think differently in the future.
      PS 2 : the positive aspect is that they used robots inside the cathedral to send water under the fire (with no humans to risk their life). The only humans were rushing to save the treasuries that were on the sides of the cathedral. Technology and innovation will be very good tools in the future.

I don’t know if his was the rendering I saw on TV, but this information is the most valuable knowledge we have about the construction of the cathedral.
    We were in Paris just a couple of years before the fire and we spent an entire day at Notre Dame, exploring inside and out and photographing everything from every angle we could get. I must have 3000-4000 images from that day. That building is phenomenal. I’m glad they’re committed to restoring it exactly as it was.

Yet that is not mentioned. It seems to me he is less a Belgian Art Historian than an American Art Historian. I wouldn't have mentioned it if he was labled "Belgian-American Art Historian", as that is more correct. In any case, It is fortunate that he fell in love with Notre Dame and spent so much time digitizing it. His contribution will not be forgotten.

      Except that almost all the money spent in restoring Notre Dame came from private donations, so you can take your libertarian worries somewhere else. Also, get a life.
