Thank you! I was literally pressing down as hard as I could in the middle of each fret.
me too, I thought the middle was where I had to be, and was pressing down too hard because it was buzzing, and thought I wasn't pressing down hard enough
Ouch
Me too. Oops!
Same here. Good to know I wasnt the only one :)
My fingers nearly got cut, they got blue already 😅
I knew I was doing something wrong all these years holy shit, I've been pressing in the middle of a fret for 10 years now and had no idea how people managed to play so fast while pressing so hard.
10 YEARS? 😳
@@omgyoualmostmademedropmycr4395 🦊 At least it wasn't 20 years... Okay, I confess.
10 years?
haha rip
You must have callouses on your callouses dude! 😅
Dude,
You ROCK. Out of the thousands of videos on TH-cam about this subject, YOU are the only one to explain something so simple as the string not needing to be pressed down hard enough to touch the wood of the fret board. Might be a thoughtless process to an experienced guitar player, but an unknown revelation to a complete beginner such as myself. THANK YOU!
Exactly!! I watched so many videos and as a complete beginner this is the first video I found where someone teaches you about the strings in the depth.
Omg, thanks for the video!! I just realized i was pressing too hard, down to the wood, which slowed me down a lot! Now that i tried pressing just to the fret, it's all happening much faster.
This video was a lifesaver as i’m a beginner learning guitar, I was scared that maybe my gituar wasn’t tuned as the notes never sounded the same as the basic notes I tried to play but nope, guess I just didn’t play the chords correctly xD
56 yrs. old and finally gettin' serious about it. My left hand fingers are thanking you. Now I have to go get Annie out and start working on proper string pressure. Thanks for the very helpful video
I know the feeling I am 57 and have been playing for 35+ years! 1000's of performances later, and here I am! LOL :)
I feel like this is something that should be taught straight away. Why did I have to look for this lol. Thanks mate
I really like the part about finding the right amount of pressure to get the note. It seems like a lot of beginners press way too hard because they're trying to compensate for less than optimal hand and finger positioning.
My main trouble is my fat fingers touching other strings and that I was right on top of the fret with a few finger placements.
i think you can try to wide neck guitar, so there is lot of space between string. what is guitar you playing now?
Standard Martin Smith W-100 I think and im starting to get the hang of the finger placement now. Just need lots of practice I think :)
@@Pitbuller49 how about now? Have you improved over these four years?
@@dami8965 he probably gave up
Work out
I learned more in that 4:48 than I have in years. I was never shown where to place my fingers and always had sore, red fingers because I was pressing waaaay too hard.
Lol. My fingers were too short to reach so after playing badly with Sunday night youth group/ church....they were very tolerant of my enthusiasm. Gave mine away. Thanks will watch when get home and have laptop.
Reeanne Keena hahaha this is for MY benefit! wasn't meant for anyone to actually watch hahaha.
Dave Cluff playing an instrument is therapeutic.
There are many of factors in learning guitar.
One place I found that succeeds in merging these is the Guitar Guru Method (google it if you're interested) without a doubt the no.1 survival resource that I've seen.
Check out the great free video.
lokesh shrestha thanks..
I just started my journey. thanks for the tips!
7 years later, update us !
If I put any pressure on a string it won't play a sound
late reply, but press the string until it hits the wood
@@thomfetiza337 omg thank you so much! You saved me so much time :D
@@bluekuma7998 WHAT I SAID WAS WRONG, he discussed this in the vid. He said press the fret only (im not sure what it is) but dont press the wood
Thom Fetiza lol
But yea I'm 2 years late, but I'd imagine if you're still playing on, you realized practice makes perfect. It's never easy to get clean notes consistently at first but it definitely gets easier day by day.
November 21st 2018 I started playing, this was the first video on guitar I ever watched. I don't think I ever watched another one from this channel but I remember it being super helpful. Especially the bit about pressing down. I won't say it gets easier but it is tons of fun and there is endless stuff to learn. Best piece of advice I have is you will fail before the gear, what I mean is a lot of new players blame a cheap guitar or amp, or having fat fingers, small hands, etc etc etc... It really just means you need to practice more. Some things just take time and there are no shortcuts, nobody can teach you to master the neck in a simple course, no one can teach you to glide up and down... If you watch those videos they all involve learning scales and practicing them... Get a setup on a guitar that makes you want to play when you look at it, find a pick that feels comfortable in your hands and then as you get better you will learn what you need and dont need and what you like and dont like
And I was pressing too hard on the wood. I thought that's how you get callouses. Lol. Thanks for this.
Me too!
Thank you so much Mr. Peter I had no idea what I was doing wrong before because I knew I was supposed to be close to the fret but didn't realize it mattered which side.
Cheers m8!
This made a world of difference to my baritone ukulele practice.
This was 100% exactly what I'm looking for
I’ve been pushing. Really hard and my finger are taking so much punishment. So glad I found you video. Thank you 🙏🏻
My technique is so flawed because I keep on getting this distorted and bland sound. -.-
After pretty much gluing my eyes to the screen, I found out that I wasn't pressing down hard enough. O.O
Thanks for the video!
Brelyn1215 OMG I had the same mistake!
UltimateGamer5172 Yeah I felt pretty stupid. No guitarist ever got callouses on their hand from pressing the strings with feather light fingers lol
Brelyn1215 Same here
True! Once I pushed down hard enough, i actually got sound!
thank you for this video, I was pressing down right into the wood as hard as I could and your lesson makes a huge difference
literally the first 1 minute solved my hours of effort with nothing thank you 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much; I'm completely new at this; have gone through a number of little videos available; this is the most informative video I've seen. I 'like' and echo a lot of the other comments already here. Again, thanks....
Peter..I have been playing guitar since 62..I just learned to play just behind the fret. I can see that chording will be easier. I am thinking that long stretch chords will be easier. I can see this will make run faster. If I have to press harder it takes a little longer because of physics. I think this is a game changer. I will be watching your channel.
I always appreciate good videos like this with good demonstrations in great detail. Thank you so much.
OH MY GAWD, IT WORKS!! I didn't even think about this. Thanks so much Peter!!
I never knew that I’ve been mashing down the strings and messing up the sound. I never knew that. I’m glad I found this
Amazing advice, and just to think, I have been playing guitar for 35+ years and I just learn this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS Again!
Very glad I found this video man my hand has been cramping so bad from trying to hold the strings as hard as I could
Thank you! You explained everything so clearly and didn't rush.
This vid helped so much. I was confused and couldn’t figure out if the boxes were the frets or the metal strips and I didn’t know if I had to hold down the string on the fret or on the metal strip
before watching this vid, i was wasting my whole life trying to learn, thank you so much
SIR THANK YOU THANK YOU AFTER STRUGGLING FOR A WEEK I FINALLY GET IT! THANK YOU!
For 5 years Ive held off learning guitar only and ONLY because it was too damn painful. No one EVER told me to only hold it against the fret and not on its neck. I just tried it out on my guitars that brand new since 2015, never played a full song on it... Right now I tried playing and it didnt hurt and the sound was right.
Thank you! Thank you! What a simple tip, but it helped me so much with the basic C chord, (B string 1st fret). Subscribed!
Thanks man.. i was really pressing hard..now it seems so easy
Mind blown!! How have i never heard this before. I quit playing as a teenager cus i couldnt press as hard. Thank you!
This help me so much thank you!!
Really useful, starting from a beginners perspective ie- me, I will be looking for more of your videos as I progress

Thank for the process!!
You are a life saver thank you , you helped me so much
Gracias for the tips.
I'm a beginner, now I understand why my fingers feel tired because I pressed harder than I should. I tried putting light pressure and it sounds better without tiring my fingers. Thanks
thanks.Extremely helpful . finally got it right !
omg this has helped me so much thank you
thank you.. I'm a beginner been messing around for about a month and found your video ...I've been pressing way too hard, to the point of soreness on my fingertips
Oh my goodness thank you so much!

Thant helped me sooo much thanks!!!
Thanks for making this video!
Dude you are amazing I love you
Superb cover! Yeah ! !
Thx for the help!
it helped me a lot!!!
Thank u I was having trouble over thinking the placement of my fingers and no one started there so the beginning I'd the holding and I didn't want to ask that's my own ignorance but thank u a beginner is shaped by their own vision no other interpretation to fight against that's how ppl pick up things better in my opinion because there's no knots tied by anyone else to untie ....
you are a hero
Thanks for the video! Easy to understand and follow along :)
Thank you 💖.
